My friend Katy recently returned from a trip to America. She is a pretty knowledgeable girl, I have a circle of friends that I would say are pretty broad minded, intelligent and opinionated, (can anyone tell why I'm the odd one out? I'm just there to play puff puff give) Katy would certainly be the most. She went to America with high hopes of academic success, hot American guys with cool accents and rock concerts that you simply can't get the likes of in England, England generally sucks when if comes to gigs. She went on around the 13th of September, bad time to go we said but she had her heat set on it and if Katy wants Katy gets, even if Katy kills to get it. 3 days later I got an e-mail from her saying she was totally out of place, didn't like the sun and couldn't stand the 
ultra patriotism that Americans were displaying. A week later she came home. I spoke to her about it and began to get a picture of what if was like.  American flags everywhere, the pledge of allegiance wherever you go, and 
I swear if I hear the date "September 11th" one more time on the news I'm going to cry into my tea and crumpets and stamp on my bowler hat. Since that day I've watched Bush speak to the nation, I've laughed at the fact that he wants to eradicate terrorism (mental note; who supplied the IRA with guns and money for use in terrorist acts? America, more to the point, who supplied and supported bin laded in his struggle against the Russians? yup, you guessed it, America) hypocrisy gets me down, and just for the record, I'd like to get Bush's 'W' and stick it right up his pokey little ass.
Ok, this all starts back on September the 11th. I woke up at 1pm English time just in time to watch the second plane crash straight into the world trade center, and I have to say I was as shocked as anyone, for a start I didn't get any that night because my girlfriend didn't feel it was appropriate. bummer. since then, I have literally 
been bored fuckin stupid by the huge show of national patriotism shown by the majority of Americans. Having grown up in a country like England, Where quite basically to go to sleep with your country's flag wrapped 
around you is the preserve of the homeless, the national front (the English nazis) or the old people who cant get over the fact that life has moved on since the second world war. I find it totally weird that people can be this patriotic. I can't say that I wouldn't fight for England, for the honor of my country, but in all honesty, I'd prefer to die by chopping off my balls and bleeding to death than become a martyr for my family in the name of my country. This, however, is the part of patriotism I can understand (which means yeah I get worse) I was in a chat room today talking with some guy about the war in Afghanistan, and in all honesty I was laughing my knackers
off. He was trying to convince me that a world superpower attacking a 3rd world nation in dire poverty, is something to be proud of. I've grown up my whole life in the shadow of terrorism, I live very close to where the IRA bombed a shopping centre in the middle of Manchester, my sister and my mum were in Manchester at the time, and I know exactly what it's like to hear that some disaster has happened due to terrorists, and the feeling of wanting to kick the guys who did it squarely in the head, But does this mean that England so Attack Ireland? we've had god knows how many Hundred years of the Irish attacking us, but I for one understand it and I would never go over there and shoot the IRA down. this is what I hate Patriotism I can stand, Blind patriotism, like that shown by the millions of goat fucking hicks in the American south west, I can't. The problem with America is that it is a young country, it has, in relation to the rest of the world, no history, and it is desperately trying to get some. The high school books in America are tainted beyond belief when it comes to stuff such as the second world war, and before you write me off as an X-files watching geek with a penchant for conspiracy theory, hear me out. I studied for two years in order to gain a history a-level, in which time I looked mostly at the 2nd world war. A really popular thing to say is "America saved the British and the Russians in the war" this is something not only accepted by the American people, but actually taught and condoned in their literature. Excuse me, but bullshit. The Americans fought the war on one front, the far east, attacking the midget Japanese who lets face it, can hardly see over the dash of a Volkswagen beetle, let alone pilot fighter planes. (maybe that's why they kept crashing into stuff?) the fact is the Americans beat the Japanese, yes, but the allies, Russia and Britain, and some of the French beat the Nazis on the western, eastern and southern fronts (southern mainly being Africa and the battle of el-alamein) the Americans merely managed to run into Berlin just in time for the Russians to beat the Germans in Berlin and claimed the victory. If you don't believe me, try reading some Robert conquest, he's cool, he's like a cuddly old man, but a bad ass historian! the gulf war was the same. Here you guys are being told that the Americans beat Saddamm Hussein, but forgive me if I forgot Hussein's unconditional surrender and his trial for war crimes. Where is Hussein now? in exactly the same place he was, in his mansion combing his mustache, only now he's got the people of Iraq loving him for holding off the Americans. Ok right, so that was a bit of a tangent, but it's all to prove a point,  the point of blind patriotism. you have all these gulf war veterans and shit
held up to be heroes, and because of the huge patriotic feeling towards America by its inhabitants, nobody questions it, nobody sits back and thinks "hold on, we didn't really win in the gulf, and now we have a million
veterans suffering from gulf war syndrome" I read an interesting story the other week in high times magazine, about a book called "fortunate son" which was banned because it condemned George W. Bush as a cocaine snorting, backhand dealing "I'm in power because of my connections" idiot (tell us something we don't know) the feeling against that book was so strong that the book was burnt (by the publishers) and  it's author, one J.H.Hatfield was left in professional ruin, fearing for his life. (incidentally, none of the allegations made in fortunate some were ever proven to be wrong) to a certain degree I can understand this, nobody wants rioting on the streets against Bush, or to the worst extreme, another JFK, but Bush once said "freedom should have it's limits" and it seems that it's limits are anything that would condemn a 'great nation' and it's leader. The extents of this blind patriotism that the American Government needs it's people to have are huge, the incident where the great Deceased comic Bill Hicks (not to be confused with Gill hicks from mall rats) had his legs broke somewhere in the American south for a part of his routine being "unpatriotic" according to the local sheep fuckers. Rage against The Machine and System of a Down have both been condemned as flag burners, the list goes on. Surely patriotism such as this suppresses freedom of expression and the right to free speech, which supposedly, is the foundation of American society. unfortunately not. The ultra patriotism shown by Americans has led to a fear of the unknown, coupled with a belief of superiority over every other nation in existence. it's a dangerous mix, it's caused racism, homophobia, ignorance and greed. America is a great nation, but dig Deeper and you'll find that unlike most nations, it's fall ability is it's belief in itself, and it's denial to accept that like many other nations
it is a country built on corruption, fed by greed and ultimately, categorized by it's need for self verification. as the wars in the gulf, Vietnam and this new 'war' in Afghanistan prove (as if they have anything to fight against)
The great problem is Americans refuse to Question America, and if they try, they are immediately told that they are wrong to do so.  I don't hate Americans, so please don't think that I do, in the main they rock, and believe me, I am more than well aware of the mistakes my country has made in the past. The difference is that the English do not believe England to be the paradise land, and although I am English through and through, I would not be the first or the last to tell you the problems with my country and how they disgust me. I can look at America with (hopefully) a little teensy bit of intellectual insight and a lot of objectiveness. I do think a lot of Americans would see my point and although not entirely agree, understand that I'm not some jealous little motherfucker trying to shit on their country from afar. but there is a percentage of them, unfortunately, I'd have to say it's a majority, who are basically fascists. the Nazi's believed they were better than other, they wiped out smaller nations and they almost got away with it My fear is that because nobody will question what is taught to the younger Americans will not change, and in the most extreme circumstances, will lead to attempted world domination. It sounds stupid now I know, but who will change what is taught, who will question the supposed most powerful country in the world, and most importantly, who will succeed at it. Ignorance is rife, and people can either ignore it, or try to change it. But who are we mere mortals to question the might of the fatherland? wouldn't we all prefer to just believe that we are great and not think for a second about the repercussions of what we teach the new generations? open mindedness is a must, objectiveness always helps but as the great Zack De La Rocha once said, "if ignorance is bliss, Then wipe the smile off my face"

I would like to start off by saying....this is NOT intended to be a retort or retaliation to Dru's comment...merely a differing view point, a flip side to the coin if you like. Secondly, before you start with "ohh you're biased cos you're a yank" or "what would you know about Britain?"...I should point out that I am half English and half American and that I have lived in both countries for sustained periods of time so the last thing I am is biased either way.

The first point I must make is this reference to "ultra-patriotism". To be honest, compared to Britain who has zero national pride, anyone is patriotic. Americans still salute the flag in schools, they pledge allegiance, they will openly admit to the love of their great nation. Brits...well...umm....they play the national anthem when the soccer team plays. If America is ultra-patriotic...then Britain is Ultra-Politically correct to a point of ridicule. Here is an example. The last night of the proms is a hugely nationalistic finale to a series of classical music festivals that run through out the year....this finale takes place in late September. The night ends with a flurry of nationalistic anthems and a great amount of flag waving around the country, well.. its supposed to. This year, due to "political and racial sensitivities" they banned all flag waving and cut out all the nationalistic songs...umm....why? I didn't see any Islamic festivals or celebrations that we allow to take place here cancelled. Weird that. We are ashamed of national pride. I find also the comment that appears to ridicule the "old people" who cant move on since the second world war...a tad offensive. I hate to point this out, but if it wasn't for those "old people" who still had national pride and weren't fighting for a load of immigrants as they would be now...you wouldn't be British you would be German. (you also have the "old people" of America to thank for that)

The reference to the IRA is a little confusing....are you saying that you wouldn't want them punished? The Americans have not started a war with Afghanistan...they repeatedly asked for Bin Laden to be surrendered, deadline after deadline passed and finally, short of just shrugging and letting them get away with it America took the only course of action it had left open. In a "war" against a country...you don't normally have a relief operation for the people you are trying to kill. I have not seen one caption anywhere stating that we at war with Afghanistan....mainly because we are not...we are at war with the idiot who flew two planes into the world trade center. We are at war with terrorism..not Afghanistan. America wants justice for the outrage that was committed against its country and rightly so, its obliteration of the Taliban and their terrorist counterparts SURELY is a good thing? America has done everything it could to be as specific in target designation as it can be...remember in terms of casualties Bin Laden has a BIG head start...ask New York for confirmation of that.

America has no wish to go out and make itself an Empire (unlike Great Britain), so drawing a parallel with nazis is futile. Hitler was driven by the ideal of one super -race and wished everyone to become German (even though ironically...he was Polish by descent) and he planned to do this by extinguishing everything in his path. America has made its mistakes, yes but I don't think its true that we cant admit them. Of course, events like this bring out a strong sense of national pride and some people who are stewed in their own ignorance use that as an excuse to go and bash a few "RAG-HEADS" ....but this is not the fault of the nation, merely the fault of the individual. The British are so concerned with race relations, political correctness blah blah that national pride has become something to be ashamed of...if you wear an England flag on your clothing, or fly it from your house you are accused of being "extreme right wing" "NF, BNP" a nazi and God knows what else. Britain to its determent opens its doors to any immigrant you care to name...most of whom simply live here sponging off its hard working citizens...we have thousands of homeless...families of 5 and 6 squashed into 2 bedroom apartments yet we just keep letting those immigrants poor in...housing them, feeding them, clothing them...no one ever stops and thinks why. Finally, the gulf war reference totally foxed me. "we didn't win it"..umm...what exactly do you think the idea of the Gulf war was? It was not to go out to Kuwait...kill Saddam Hussein and take over Iraq. The only reason the Americans got involved was to kick Hussein back from whence he came...that's all the they were allowed to do under the UN directive. Hussein wanted Kuwait...we prevented that...if that didn't achieve the aim.. or if you like gain a "victory" what would you expect to happen? you cant just go and kill a head of state...in fact..that course of action has long been prevented since the Castro disaster. The war In the Gulf achieved its SPECIFIC aim....as I believe the war in Afghanistan (that's IN Afghanistan, not AGAINST) will too....I guess..only time will tell.
