August 15th, 2006 - Great Review for "Fans against Doping"

A great review brings a smile to my musical soul.
I did decide to send "Fans against Doping" to Steve Gilmore for a review. Steve Gilmore is a soundclick veteran who selflessly offers monthly reviews on songs. He and his reviews are so popular, that the sign up list of 30 spots per month fills up within a few hours.

One will receive a gentle, yet honest and to the point review.

And here is the one he wrote for "Fans against Doping". Needless to say, I was flattered, happy and pleased - all at the same time.

Artist: K-Gi
Title: Fans Against Doping

-----------------------------------------

S'funny, most fans I know just LOVE getting off their tits. Doping, in fact, is a necessity of life. Still, this doping is of an entirely different caliber altogether. Written as a song about the use of banned drugs in sport (not exactly a flavour of the month lately) it was apparently generated by an online discussion, then the formation of a website (FANS-gegen-DOPING.de) which led to this collaborative song from Anja Hoffmann and K-Gi.

K-Gi is a new (and highly effective) name to me from Soundclick and he works in the same genre as me, and that immediately perked me ears up, although the Pop label on this song soon stopped that hanky panky.

As if.

I've come across some highly original vocal slants in my time studying the online music scene. One of my all time favourites (although there are those who would argue with me) is one Slippy T to whom K-Gi bears a remarkable resemblance vocally.

The chief argument about this vocal style (at least that I've heard) is that it's too high pitched and whiny - not my words btw. I do see some merit in this accusation but not much, especially when you lay that against a profound sense of musical placement and an ability to draw you into a textually complex, dense track. Not an easy trick, and my first response to this track was that I was hearing something that 10cc would have been happy to have written.

As good as the productions values are (as in stunning, knock-your-ears off sound and crystalline mix), for me it was slightly too toppy for my liking. Still that very small change indeed and something easily remedied with a fiddle with your own sound systems EQ. Personally, sports means nothing much to me, but music is my drug of choice and K-Gi has just assumed a place of importance in it. I'm always on the lookout for the sounds of excellence the online scene seems to specialize in, and there is no doubt in my mind that K-Gi is going to become a lot more well known.
Professionalism, a sound to die for, a very catchy vocal arrangement and a blindingly good performance makes this one of the best introduction tracks I've heard this year....and you know what that means.

Highly Recommended pop with an edge of 10cc

I hope you enjoyed this review as much as I did. Maybe you feel like giving Fans against Doping a listen and to comment yourself.
Who knows, you might find a review written by you here on this page....

Thank you and wishing you a nice day,

July 29th, 2006 - A little update

No, I did not disappear, nor have I been abducted....just enjoying a very hot summer where everything slows down a little bit.
I have been jamming a lot with some friends, working on fine-tuning the Cumbia Song, working on a few other songs, some songs could be called collaborations.
The task of making "Fans against Doping" known to the world is in full swing, the song and the website of Fans-gegen-Doping.de are showing some encouraging numbers of increased visitors/plays/downloads.

In the coming months I am planning to concentrate on the production of my next album which most likely will be an all Reggae release.

I certainly hope you are all doing well and wish you the very best,

K-Gi

July 15th, 2006 - A new song for a good cause

Dear Fans and Friends,

you guessed right. All this talking about Doping triggered something in me and led to a new song. How could the name be any different than "Fans against Doping".

This pop song describes the thoughts about doping in general and the involvement of their favourite athletes in particular - from the view of a fan.

Fans against Doping is available as a free download at Soundclick
or you can listen at the download page of Fans-gegen-Doping.de

I hope you enjoy the tune and maybe find the time to comment on it.

Thank you and have a wonderful day,

K-Gi

July 3rd, 2006 - Fans against Doping - a spark of light on the horizon

Dear Fans and Friends,

after all the disturbing news about doping, there is a spark of light.

While searching the internet, I came across a German website called: Fans-gegen-Doping.de

Luckily this site also exists in English. This time it is the Fans which speak up. They have enough of ever new suspicions and often afterwards proven doping cases. Yet they also recognize that a lot must change in order to clean up professional cycling or any other professional sport.

Their concept is simple: Presence instead of Boycott.

They still want to go out on the road and cheer for their heroes - but not without their logo - a blue banana. The banana as the classic energy supplier in cycling - a performance enhancer which is allowed and not risky for their health.

The ideas and suggested solution of Fans gegen Doping seem solid, good and are inspiring.

If nothing else, I feel like a song will come out of this one shortly.

In the meantime, why not check it out and visit Fans-gegen-Doping.de

They have a supporter list where one can sign up, articles about doping, suggestions how to prevent athletes from doping. Their approach is to start in schools and sport clubs - on the basis. Where children and teenagers will learn about the risks for their own health. I find this to be a good start - amongst other suggestions for the here and now.

I hope to see you there and maybe find your name in the list of supports - or actively maybe on TV with the Fans gegen Doping Logo.....

Thank you for your support in this matter,

K-Gi

July 1st, 2006 - Tour de France - a darkened sky

Greetings from Europe,

after an uneventful trip, reality is catching up with me. Since a few weeks there are talks and rumours about the involvement of the favourite cyclists regarding doping. The Spanish police investigated a well known doctor in the cycling scene and found a lab with prohibited performance enhancers as well as bags with blood, which are said to belong to athletes in cycling and other sports.

The suspicion is, that the athletes are "clients" of this doctor, in order to receive blood-doping.

The organizers of the Tour de France acted immediately and excluded any rider which showed up on the list from the Guardia Civil. There is no proof yet - but a lot of suspicion.

2 of my favourites, Ivan Basso and Jan Ullrich are on this list, so they are out of the race before it even started. Alexandre Winokurov is not allowed to start because his team was reduced to 4, which is below the required number of riders in order to start.

So I guess I will have to pick some new favourites.

Yet it is not that simple, because the exclusion of these riders does not mean the other ones are clean.

I guess I need to sleep over this first, and therefore wish you a good night,

K-Gi

June 28th, 2006 - Time to Travel

Hello everybody,

the time has come to pack up my equipment to spend the summer in Europe. It's a different flavour all together and despite some language difficulties, I'll manage. Ongoing projects, such as the Cumbia song will get additional inspiration, spending time with friends will give me new input and meeting new people makes life exciting.
Plus I will be able to follow the full coverage of the Tour de France on TV - and maybe even stand cheering along the road. The highlight of the summer, in which I might catch a glance on my favourites, such as Ivan Basso, Alexandre Winokurov and Jan Ullrich.

Thanks to todays technology, this blog will not be abandoned and I will be able to stay in touch with all my fans and friends. I'll be back before you know it...

Wishing you a wonderful day and a great summer,

K-Gi

June 25th, 2006 - Questions over Questions

I am not sure if I'm alone with my observations, but I am certainly confused.

Whenever I'm searching for leads for submitting music, it seems more and more often I find requirements which go beyond the regular information on tempo and style.

Very often now, producers, managers and singers demand the demoed vocals to be gender-specific.
Maybe I see more requests for demos with female vocals, because there are more females looking for songs?
Or do I pay more attention to it, since all my demos are with male vocals?

Still this request leaves me baffled.

How poor on performances would this world be, if female singers could and would have only sung songs demoed and sung before by females, and if male singers could only sing "male songs"?

What could be the reason for these requests? The lyrics? Most lyrics are not gender specific. If they are, in most cases "his" can changed to "her" or vice versa.
The key? Depending on range and key of the singer, the key of the song can easily be changed to the necessary.

So why this demand to have songs demoed in 2 versions - with female and male vocals - in order submit what is required?
Can singers not hear anymore, how the song will sound if they sing it?
Or has the requirement shifted altogether from searching for good songs to looking for karaoke material instead?

If you have any insights or theories on this, please share them with me, since I am still confused.

With thanks,

K-Gi

June 18th, 2006 - Words of Wisdom by George Carlin

Once again I want to bring along some words of wisdom for your reading pleasure.

Words of Wisdom by George Carlin

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice.

We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.

Remember, spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever. Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side. Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent. Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all, mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak, and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

I hope you enjoyed this trip to the world of wisdom.

June 14th, 2006 - Music Sponsor at OurPrisoner.com

I know it has been a while that I updated my blog. Such is life - too many good things happening all at once - which is just great. Today I was selected to be a music sponsor for OurPrisoner.com
Kieran decides that he has not made the best decisions in his life. He is 36 still lives with his folks and no girl-friend in sight. He believes that anyone can make better decisions for him than he can make for himself. Therefore he agrees to be locked up for 6 month and have the internet (therefore you and me) make the decisions for him.

But see for yourself and take part in this fun experience.

Just don't be cruel to Kieran - he is already condemned to listen to all kind of music at times.

Wishing you a nice and rewarding day,

June 2nd, 2006 - The World Project Musical

As a member of the International Songwriting Association I come across very interesting projects at times. One outstanding project is the world project musical.
The initiator is Carl D. White from Martian Entertainment.
A company which is responsible for the management and production of several successful musicals. The vision is to put together a musical, with music and poems from all kind of songwriters and lyricists. The theme is the earth itself, the issues which need to be discussed and dealt with, the pain we cause to mother earth every day, the pain caused to human beings, animals and the environment.

If you like to find out more, please visit Carl D.White on myspace

Wishing you a bright and sunny day,

June 1st, 2006 - Desiderata - a profound poem with controversy

Dear Fans and Friends, today I would like to share a poem with you.

The controversy amounts from the fact that several people claim it was written already in 1692 - which leaves one amazed by the choice of words. However, some research has shown that this is not the case. But read for yourself and enjoy the profoundness of these wise words:

DESIDERATA

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.

Especially, do not feign affection.

Neither be cynical about love; For in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe , no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams it is still a beautiful world.

Be careful.

Strive to be happy.

Found in Old St. Paul's Church, Baltimore, dated 1692

Max Ehrmann, Desiderata, Copyright 1952.

I very much enjoy these profound statements, and for me they cover any situation all of us encounter, sooner or later, in life. While it is not always easy to try and live by it, I certainly try.
In times of difficulties and when obstacles are placed in my way, I find comfort and encouragement in the above.
Therefore a copy of DESIDERATA can always be found in my guitar case. And there not many things a guitar player does without his guitar...
Yes and there is the little confusion where DESIDERATA came from. The version I have, reads that it was found in Old St. Paul's Church in 1692. There is also the copyright of Max Ehrmann from 1952. So I just include both information, to do justice to both. On some websites it is explained, that a priest of old St. Paul's Church used DESIDERATA and printed the founding year of the church along - which was 1692. This is might where the confusion comes from.

Regardless - I thank the one who put the wisdom into words -for us to read.

May 30th, 2006 - A Cumbia song for a video

Today, while browsing around in myspace I came across a filmmaker which was looking for music. After I send a link to my song which can be heard on soundclick, the person wrote back to me. "Your songs are nice, but not really what I am looking for....I am looking for Cumbia music. Would you consider to write a cumbia song for the video I am making?" Hell yes. So I tuned into the Latin stations to get my mind into a cumbia mood. So if you see someone dancing cumbia in the streets of Toronto, that might be me......

Hopefully the song makes it into the final cut and everybody will be happy with the finished product.

Of course, once the song is finished, you will be the first one's to know - if you read my blog or sign up for my newsletter.

Wishing you a rewarding day,

K-Gi

May 20th, 2006 - African Drums - a new Sound and Song

Our neighbour is a contemporary dancer with a deep passion for African Dance. She teaches all kind of dance classes and was searching for an uplifting African song, which she could use for training and her performances. So we set together and she gave me the details of what she needed.

The result is a song called Liberté, which tells the story of an African Woman, who liberates herself and finds freedom through Faith.
A video clip of Patricia von Essen performing this dance can be found at:African Dance. As time progresses we expect to have more videos of Patricia's performances and of course she will need some new music too....

May your day be bright and peaceful,

K-Gi

May 12th, 2006 - Link Tiles - a neat little tool

Once again while searching for marketing ideas and innovative tools I came across a website called LinkTiles.
A link tile is a small tile (no kidding) and mine looks like this:

The neat thing about this link tile is, that it combines all of your different websites. If you are an artist, signing up for a linktile is free. You choose your slogan, your picture, you can add it to your outgoing e-mails as a signature or as a logo on your websites. With one easy click the visitor will find all your different websites to choose from. Plus you will receive a weekly hit count from linktiles.
I know, I sound like I am getting paid for an add here - unfortunately this is not the case. I am just excited about this neat little tool and wanted to share this information with you.

Take care and have a good day,

K-Gi
