2002 MLB Golden Sharpie Awards

This is the first annual MLB Golden Sharpie Awards, given to the best autograph signers in all of baseball. I first off, want to thank the many collectors and websites who helped me make the Golden Sharpies possible. I also want to thank everyone who voted. The 2002 MLB Golden Sharpie Awards are dedicated to two Nat'l Baseball Hall of Famers who passed away this year and were always great autograph signers. They are Enos Slaughter and Hoyt Wilhelm. I named two awards after them in honor of their memory.

DEDICATED TO:

And the Winners Are...

BEST SIGNING TEAM OF THE YEAR

Minnesota Twins
29.84% of Total Votes

Scan courtesy of Ben's Baseball Autographs

The Twins dominated their division this year on the field. The also dominated off the field with being rewarded the best signing team in all of baseball. It's nice to see good young talent like Torii Hunter, Doug Mientkiewicz, and A.J. Pierzynski and even a Hall of Famer like Kirby Puckett always being nice to fans and responding to their fan mail. Let's hope them and all of the Twins stay that way.

Runners Up
Baltimore Orioles (16.31%)

THROUGH THE MAIL SIGNER OF THE YEAR

Vladimir Guerrero
35.66% of Total Votes

Scan courtesy of J's Autographs TTM

Vladimir is one of the best right fielders in all of baseball. With a cannon for an arm and a natural, pure hitter. I think one day, he will be the BIG name in baseball. He also thus far in his career been nice to fans through the mail and always signed numerous autograph requests. Although his signing this year has not been as frequent as the past, he still is the Through The Mail Signer of the Year!

Runner Up
Garrett Anderson (19.38%)

HOYT WILHELM AWARD: BEST SIGNING PITCHER

Mike Mussina
16.67% of Total Votes

Scan courtesy of Mark's Signing Bonus

"Moose" is an established veteran in the American League with many years, being the Orioles best pitcher. Now with the Yankees, still performing. For being such a great pitcher and playing for the Yankees, he must be a terrible signer, right? Wrong, he is one of the best signers in all of baseball and this award proves he is the best signing pitcher.

Runner Up
Brandon Duckworth (11.54%)

ROOKIE SIGNER OF THE YEAR

Mark Prior
40.8% of Total Votes

Mark is one of the bright young pitchers in baseball and possibly the greatest college pitcher of all time. His recent fame has not yet got to his head. He is a great signer and the best signing rookie.

Runner Up
Nick Johnson (9.6%)

COMEBACK SIGNER OF THE YEAR

Pokey Reese
31.93% of Total Votes

During the offseason, Pokey was traded many times. With being shuffled around to numerous teams, then winding up in Pittsburgh as a Pirate, his ways of signing have changed as well. Pokey signed many autograph requests for collectors this year, unlike years past, and is the Comeback Signer of the Year.

Runner Up
Omar Vizquel (29.41%)

SPARKY ANDERSON AWARD: BEST SIGNING MANAGER

Larry Bowa
20% of Total Votes

In the 2001 season, Bowa lead the Phillies to a near Playoff birth. 2002, not so good. However, the hot-tempered manger and former player has still remained loyal to his fans. Although he barely won this award beating runner-up Tony LaRussa by only 1.6% of the votes, he is the best signing manager.

Runner Up
Tony LaRussa (18.4%)

ENOS SLAUGHTER AWARD: HALL OF FAME SIGNER OF THE YEAR

Sparky Anderson
41.41% of Total Votes

Scan courtesy of J's Autographs TTM

Managed both the Detroit Tigers and the Cincinnati Reds to a World Series title during his Hall of Fame managing career, Mr. Anderson is nicer than his fans than his pitchers. Being nicknamed Captain Hook for yanking his pitchers early, Sparky has always signed nicely for fans. This great manager and great human being is the H.O.F. Signer of the Year.

Runner Up
Bob Doerr (20.31%)

IN PERSON SIGNER OF THE YEAR

Shawn Green
38.05% of Total Votes

Scan courtesy of Mark's Signing Bonus

Unfortunately, as you may know, the Dodgers refused fan mail this season. That did not stop Shawn from signing for his fans. He often signs nicely for fans before many Dodger games, away and home with a very nice signature. He is also one of the top players and baseball and I hope throughout his career, remains as nice. Mike from Mike's Baseball Autographs once said Mr. Green should get some kind of award for signing as much as he does. Well, he has.

Runner Up
Tim Spooneybarger & Tony Womack (17.7%)

BASEBALL AUTOGRAPH COLLECTOR OF THE YEAR

Mark McKinley
47.97% of Total Votes

Markssigningbonus.com

Mark has one of the best autograph sites out there and maybe the best. He is the master of Mark's Signing Bonus. Always having numerous autograph successes on his site, which I visit daily, he is the Baseball Collector of the Year. He collects all sports autographs as well as baseball. He has always been friendly to me and always kindly helping me out. I can't give enough praise to this great collector and the voters can't either. He received nearly half of the votes, my site J's Autographs Through The Mail was second with 13.01%. Mark dominated this award, wasn't even close! Next year, I should reward it to Mark before I start the awards :)
