(1) What is Yahoo Briefcase?

Yahoo! Briefcase is a tool that allows you to store files online and then access them from anywhere. Think of it as an extra hard drive that you can use from any computer connected to the Internet. You can use it to manage files from home, work, or any other location. It's a great way to share files with family, friends, and co-workers.

Yahoo gives  30MB worth of space for free, to get you started. That's room for plenty of files. There's no catch -- you just have to be a registered Yahoo! member.

You don't need to know HTML or any technical tricks to get started. Return often to take advantage of the new services that will make it even easier to share and manage pictures and files.

If  you are registered Yahoo member then click Briefcase bottom of your address HOME PAGE

(2) How do I access my briefcase?

To access your briefcase, simply go to:

http://briefcase.yahoo.com/

If you're not logged in, you'll be prompted for your Yahoo! ID and password. If you don't have a Yahoo! ID, you'll have the opportunity to register.

You can also direct your family, friends, and co-workers to your briefcase. If your Yahoo! ID is, for example, Yahoo_JoeUser, then the web address for your briefcase would be http://briefcase.yahoo.com/Yahoo_JoeUser. Just point people to this address.

You can also access your briefcase from your My Yahoo! (http://my.yahoo.com/) page. Simply click on "View Briefcase" from the message center area, on the upper-left side of My Yahoo!. Add your briefcase to My Yahoo!.

(3) Can I put anything I want into my briefcase?

Yes, you can put any type of file into your briefcase, provided it falls within certain content and size guidelines. Your files and photos must comply with our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.

Violation of these guidelines could lead to the deletion of your briefcase, its contents, and/or your Yahoo! ID. Please exercise good judgment

(4) How do I add a file to my briefcase?

This process is called "uploading." To upload a file or photo, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the "Add File" link, found either on the Folder List (the front page of your briefcase) or within a specific folder or album.
  2. Select the type of file upload from the top of the "Add File" page. "Multiple Files" lets you upload as many as six files at a time.
    • Single File: Click on the "Browse" button to choose the item to be uploaded. Locate the item on your computer's hard drive, select it, and click on the "Open" button. If you can't find the file or photo, make sure you are not limiting the types of files shown in the "Browse" window. (To point to an item already on the Web, click on the "Or point to a file on the Web" link.)
    • Multiple Files: This works just like the "Single File" option, but you can upload as many as six files at once.
  3. Give your item a name and brief description, then click "Upload." There may be some delay or lag time while your item is being sent to us, depending on the size of the file and the speed of your Internet connection. (If you're linking to an online file, you will see "Add Link" at this stage.)

Note for Mac users: If you use a Macintosh computer, be sure to add a file extension to the name of the item before you click on "Upload." If your picture is a JPEG, add ".jpg" to the end of the name (e.g., a JPEG photo named "cowbell" would be renamed "cowbell.jpg"). If your file is a Microsoft Word document, add ".doc" to the end of the name.

(5) How do I create or edit a folder?

Click "Create Folder" from the top page of your briefcase (the top of your briefcase is also called "Folder List").

Next, enter a name for your folder and choose the level of sharing:

  • Private: Only you can access the folder and its contents.
  • Public: Anyone can access the folder and its contents.
  • Friends: Only selected friends can access the folder and its contents. (Enter the Yahoo! IDs of your friends in the appropriate box to restrict acccess.)

You can change the name and accessibility of your folder at any time. Simply click on "Edit" next to the folder's name on your Folder List.

*Please note: If you are a member of the free Yahoo! Briefcase service, public access to your uploaded files will no longer be available. However, you will still be able to share your files with people with Yahoo! IDs and via email.

 (6) How do I share files?

Share items with people in two ways: give them access to the folders in your briefcase, or email them the links to the items.

"Sharing" is associated with the contents of a folder. When you create a folder, you determine who to share it with -- everybody, nobody, or only specific people.

If you select "Private" for your folder or album, only you can access it.

If you select "Public" for your folder, anybody can access it, even if they don't have a Yahoo! ID.

If you select "Friends" for your folder or album, only the people whose Yahoo! IDs you list will be able to access it.

You can change who has access to a folder at any time by clicking on "Edit" next to the folder or album name (on the front page of your briefcase).

The easiest way to point somebody to your folder is to copy its URL and send it to them. Or, instruct the person to go to the front page of your briefcase where they can find the folders or albums they have permission to access.

*Please note: If you are a member of the free Yahoo! Briefcase service, public access to your uploaded files will no longer be available. However, you will still be able to share your files with people with Yahoo! IDs and via email.

(7) Can I move files or folders from one folder to another?

Currently, you can only move pictures in an album to another album, and files in a folder to another folder.

Moving files from one folder or album to another is easy:

  1. Go to the folder or album where your item currently exists.
  2. Select the item using the checkbox to the left of the item name.
  3. Then go to the box that says "Choose Destination."
  4. Click on the box and select where you'd like to move your item.
  5. Then click "Move," and your item will appear in the new destination.

( 8) How do I send files to a friend?

Instead of emailing a specific file, you can send somebody an email that automatically includes links to your files. The recipient can then decide whether or not to download the files.

Simply open an album or folder that contains the items you want to send. Check the boxes next to the names of the items you want to send, then click the "Email" button.

You can enter up to five email addresses and add a personal note. When you are finished, click the "Send" button. We will send a message with your email address and links to the files you selected. The email will also include the names, descriptions, and sizes of the files.

Just follow these simples steps to send link of your some file to your friend

1)  open your briefcase

2)  go to your mail attachment folder or file  (link for which you want to send ),  all the files in your mail attachments forlder would be visible to you

3)  click the check box besides the files you want to mail

4)  click the E MAIL button

5)  this will take you to the bottom of the page

6)  type the address to whom you want to send with a small message of 200 characters and send the mail.

7)  if you are sending the mail to your group address then adopt the same procedure for sending the mail to your members as you were doing earlier

NOTE:  don’t take the link of your briefcase files from your browser address bar.  This address / link is for you only  which will not permit other to read the files in your briefcase.   (members can see your briefcase but cant access file in it if you took link from your browser address bar)

(9) How do I create or edit a photo album?

You can create a folder from either Yahoo! Briefcase or Yahoo! Photos to hold your pictures. When you access the folder through Yahoo! Photos, you will have additional functionality and options for your pictures.

To create a photo album, go to the front page of Yahoo! Photos. Click the "Create a New Album" link in the left-hand column. Next, enter a name for your album and choose the level of sharing:

  • Private: Only you can access the folder and its contents.
  • Public: Anyone can access the folder and its contents.
  • Friends: Only selected friends can access the folder and its contents. (Enter the Yahoo! IDs of your friends in the appropriate box to restrict acccess.)

You can change the name and accessibility of your album at any time. Simply click on "Edit" next to the album name on the folder list.

(10) What's the difference between Yahoo! Briefcase and Yahoo! Photos?

Yahoo! Briefcase and Yahoo! Photos are essentially the same thing. You can store most major file types in Yahoo! Briefcase, including JPEG, GIF, BMP, all Microsoft Office file types, MP3, Real Media, WAV, AIFF, HTML, and numerous others. Yahoo! Photos albums and Yahoo! Briefcase folders are actually the same thing but their contents are displayed differently. If you create an album in Photos, you will create a folder in Briefcase.

If you use Yahoo! Briefcase to arrange and store files, you will see Yahoo! Briefcase folders as albums in Yahoo! Photos. Yahoo! Photos only shows photo files, such as JPGs and GIFs. Any other files will be hidden within Photos.

You have 30MB of space to use for all of your Briefcase and Photos files. Currently, we support a maximum file size of 5MB per file. Please use our feedback form if you'd like us to support larger file sizes or different file types.

How can I give access to my photos for a limited time?

When you share pictures from Yahoo! Photos you can choose how long the recipient can access them. The sharing email that we send will have a link that will be valid for a length of time that you can determine. Choose from the following options:

  • "No Expiration" - The link is live indefinitely.
  • "Two Weeks" - The link will be live for two weeks.
  • "One Month" - The link will be live for one month.

When the email link has expired the people you have shared with will not be able to access your pictures

 any longer.

Can I share my folders only with my friends?

Yes, you can share specific folders with only selected people. Simply enter the Yahoo! IDs of the people

you want to share with when you create or edit the album or folder.

Your friends will be able to view and download your files. Currently, they cannot upload files into your briefcase. If you would like to add your friends' items to your briefcase, have them email the items to you, and then you can upload them into your briefcase.

Can I access someone else's briefcase?

Yes, you can access someone's briefcase if the person has created a folder or album and has granted access to you specifically. This means the account owner has entered your Yahoo! ID in their list of friends to share with.

*For Premium accounts only - If a Yahoo! Briefcase Premium account owner has created a folder or album and made the contents public or specifically granted you access, then you can view that person's briefcase.

Simply go to the person's briefcase. If, for example, his Yahoo! ID is "Yahoo_JoeUser," you would go to:
http://briefcase.yahoo.com/Yahoo_JoeUser

You can then download and view the files in that person's folder.

You can also easily access someone's briefcase from their public profile. If that person has chosen to list their briefcase on their profile, click on the link to access their public files.

*Please note: If you are a member of the free Yahoo! Briefcase service, public access to your uploaded files will no longer be available. However, you will still be able to share your files with people with Yahoo! IDs and via email

When do accounts become dormant? Is the date deleted from a dormant account?

If an account has not been logged into for six months, it will become "dormant."

When an account becomes dormant, it will be deactivated, and the data contained in it will be deleted. Once an account becomes dormant and is deactivated, you will no longer have access to, and Yahoo! is unable to retrieve any of the data that was formerly stored in it.

Note: SBC Yahoo! accounts and accounts with Premium Storage are exempt from deactivation and data deletion.

In above example real sources is colored.  The above source is taken from OUT LOOK EXPRESS.

If you are using Hotmail then you have to right click for “ copy  short cut ”

The source taken from hotmail will work only when you are on line with hotmail.   This is the drawback of hotmail source that it searches it source  only thru hotmail.

If you are using Yahoo  then you have to right click for “ Properties  ” , then copy the source address.  The source taken from Yahoo  will work without opening the Yahoo.
