Lovesexy

Released May 10th 1988

High Level Review

The most spiritually oriented of Prince's albums, this work is richly complex with many layers of orchestrated strings and jazz horns.

Lyrics

The cover symbolizes the personal "rebirth" motif inherent in the album, which also touches on social issues. Lovesexy is "the feeling you get when you fall in love.. not with a boy or girl, but the heavens above." Although many people are unsatisfied with the answer, this album is the resolution to the love/sex problem that Prince had been exploring for many years.

Singles

Tour

An ill-received tour of the US that was nonetheless excellent. It was a "theatre-in-the-round" that was split into two halves. The first half being the "dark" Prince, the second half dwelling on his positive material.

The tour was much better received when it hit Europe.

The Critics

Most critics liked the tour, although some didn't understand the contradictory themes.

Notes

Some record stores wouldn't carry the album because of the provocative cover.

Band: Miko Weaver (guitar), Eric Leeds (sax), Atlanta Bliss (trumpet), Matt Fink (keyboards), Bonnie Boyer (keyboards), Shiela E. (drums), Levi Seacer Jr. (bass), Kathy "Cat" Glover (dancer)
