Canadian GM mining Tony Guthrie (left) and senior divisional surveyor Alex Bals (right) with John McConnell, vice president NWT projects (Snap Lake) and Jeremy Wyeth, Snap Lake mining project leader. The men from Canada were in South Africa to attend the August mining review and also visited operations here and in Botswana to establish best practice.
Chairman Nicky Oppenheimer and senior company officials visited Williamson Mine at Mwadui in Tanzania during August. They were in the country to attend the opening of the Geita gold mine (a joint venture between AngIoGold and Ashanti) near Mwanza. Williamson is 75 per cent owned by De Beers and treats two million tons a year. Production for this year is likely to be more than 250 000 carats. This is from tailings retreatment and from the economically viable remnant ore in the 50-year-old pit. The visit was an opportunity to view improvements made since De Beers took over the operation of the mine in 1994.
There are about 900 employees, about half of whom are contractors. The MD is John Acland. Exploration work was undertaken by De Beers from 1993 and resulted in the discovery of over 90 new kimberlite pipes in Tanzania. However none of these proved economically attractive and Exploration was suspended at the end of last year.
