Interstate 94 is a east-west interstate, but runs mostly north-south through Illinois. Portions of I-94 in Illinois are toll. This is one of the heaviest traveled interstates in Illinois.

One section of I-94 in Illinois is labels the Dan Ryan Expressway. Sections of the Ryan Expy. can be 10-14 lanes wide. From I-55 (Stevenson Expy.) to the Chicago Skyway, the Ryan Expy. is divided into the "Local" and "Express" Lanes. The Express lanes stay 4 lanes wide in each direction. While the Local lanes, ranges from 2-3 lanes in each directions.
