Study Verse

ROMANS 14:8

"...FOR IF WE LIVE, WE LIVE FOR THE
LORD, OR IF WE DIE, WE DIE FOR THE
LORD; THEREFORE WHETHER WE LIVE OR
DIE, WE ARE THE LORDS. "

Some people are afraid to die. They do everything they can do to keep themselves alive and if you even mention the word "death", they cringe. And I suppose that's not such a bad thing, but I'm not really that afraid to die. Dying doesn't scare me one bit... as long as it doesn't hurt. That's what scares me. Somebody once said, "I'm not good enough to be a saint, but I could be a martyr... as long as they killed me quickly."

I, myself, am much more afraid of living! The way I see it is that I can't mess anything up if I'm dead. If I'm dead, I will be in heaven and I will be perfect and everything will be much better! We can all rejoice and long for that, can't we?

Listen, Jesus was afraid to die, too. Remember? He was in the garden and He was praying to the Father, "If it be your will, let this cup pass from me." Jesus was really saying, "Dad! I don't want to die!" He wasn't afraid of death itself, but He knew that it would hurt and Jesus, in His flesh, didn't want to go through the pain. We can identify with Him and He with us on that level, so let's be afraid of death... but not too afraid to face it.

On the other hand, for now, we are here and here is where He wants us to be. If this is where we are and this is where He wants to be, then let us be alive. Let us live for Christ until we die and when we die, may we be counted worthy to die for Him. After all, "...we are the Lords."

You hold on to that... -M. Gray-
