In may 1975 was the introduction of the Mercedes 280SE 6.9. Three years after the flagship from the 109-serie, the Mercedes 280SEL 6.3 , left the factory, was Mercedes already offering a top model in the S-class. The management of Mercedes didn't want to bring a car on the market with a high fuel consumption during the oil crisis in 1973 and 1974 . Without any public introduction, introduced Mercedes the 280SE 6.9 as successor of the 280SEL 6.3 to the press. The only external difference between the "normal" W116 and the 6.9 were the headlight wipers and the 6.9 badge on the trunk. The real big difference was under the hood. The 6.9 indication was for the 6.834cm3 six cylinder engine in lineal type with a Solex-4 carburetor and dry-sump lubrication. The 6.9 was with a total of 7.380 produced between may 1975 and march 1980.
