Note on the “Dead Gods”:
The so-called “dead gods” are not really dead, they are
merely trapped in an unknown manner, unable to grant their followers spells or
directly affect the Mortal Realms. The worship of these deities is forbidden in
the Empire, as there is a common fear that if enough people proclaim themselves
worshippers of one of the dead gods, the god will gain the power to resurrect
himself.
This,
of course, does not actually stop many misguided people from trying to bring
back the dead gods in order to (hopefully) gain power and status as a priest of
a newly-risen god. A few mad-men seek out rituals of great power, hoping to
gain the power to free their chosen god, hoping beyond reason that they will
gain the eternal gratitude of a divine power. The Empire takes great pains to
destroy any re-vivification cults that might spring up.
The
only dead-god cult legally allowed in the Empire is the Cult of the Sage, as it
is believed that because the Sage voluntarily allowed himself to be locked
away, he will not force his way back to the Mortal Realms. Despite the legality
of the worship of the Sage, his following is small, as there is no real
hierarchy within the organization, and they have no political power. Still,
some believe that knowledge is power, and some simply respect the sacrifice
made by the Sage eons ago.
There is also a small Unification cult, that hopes that by worshipping the gods in equal measure, that they might eventually bring back the One-Before-All. Actual belief in how this might be done varies between each cult. Some feel that first the dead gods must be revived, others feel that all must get equal reverence.
