Faith and Mission

As Lutherans, we believe that God has acted in the person of Jesus Christ, to bring forgiveness of sin and new life in him.

We believe that God comes to us in the preaching of the good news of the Gospel and through Holy Communion and Holy Baptism.

Our mission at St. John's is to share that good news with all people. It is out hope and prayer that you will accept our invitation to join us, and share in our life as a part of God's people.

History of St. John's

The history of St. John's dates back as early as 1828, as part of the Smithfield Virginia parish. When the congregation's church burned, the flock was scattered.

In 1848, the Reverend T.P. Smeltzer brought the congregation together at Harpers Ferry. The cornerstone for the present structure was laid on April 30, 1850. The congregation survived the tumultuous days of John Brown and his raiders, but the Civil War caused the Church to be closed while the Union occupied the building as a hospital.

The Church struggled to remain open during the remaining 19th century and was reopened in 1928. It was rededicated in 1953.

Today, St. John's continues to serve the people of Harpers Ferry, as we celebrate and proclaim the Gopel of Jesus Christ.
