Mt. Erebus located on Ross Island, Antarctica is the world's most southern active volcano. It stands in the Ross Sea at 12, 444 feet. In 1979, a DC-10 of New Zealand Airlines crashed into Mt. Erebus while on a sightseeing trip of Antarctica. all 257 passengers on-board were killed. Mt. Erebus is about 1.3 million years old and is still Moderately Active. Within the past year, small ash eruptions and even a small lava flow have also been observed coming from vents near the lava lake. Most of Mt. Erebus is covered in snow and ice, but the top 500 feet of the peak is covered with rocks and clumps of lava. Click Here for pictures
