ElementaryMy Friend Rabbit     By Eric Rohmann  Caldecott Award Medal Winner

                  In this book, there are two characters: a mouse and a rabbit.  The mouse gets a new airplane and wants to share it with his friend rabbit.  As they are playing the airplane lands in a tree and rabbit goes to get the whole neighborhood to help.  This is a book on friendship.

 

                  Katie Did It  By Becky Bring McDaniel and Lois Axeman

                  A story of a child listening to her siblings.  Every time they did something wrong they blamed it on Katie saying “Katie did it”.  This happened over and over.  Not being able to speak Katie drew a picture for her mother and the mother asked “who drew this picture?” Katie said, “Katie did it.”  Those were here first words.

 

                  Molly Moves to Sesame Street  By Judy Freudberg

                  Molly doesn’t want to move into her new house on Sesame Street.  She decides to go inside and start putting her things away in her room.  She hears children playing so she decides to go play.  When she gets to the place where she heard the children playing she can’t find them.  They were playing hide and seek.  They all popped out of their hiding place wanting to meet Molly.  They all liked her and wanted to play.  Then they all went to the store to get a snack and when she got home she was so excited about her room being finished and meeting new friends that she now loved living on Sesame Street.

 

 

Middle-

            Old Yeller  By Fred Gipson- Newberry Honor Award

            Travis never thought that he would ever want another dog after Bell (his dog) died. Travis’s father went off leaving him there to do all the fatherly chores. 

            Travis couldn’t do all of the work on his own until an old ugly stray dog named Old Yeller came into his life.  At first he hated Old Yeller, but later grew to love him.

 

            The Cabin Faced West  By Jean Fritz

            A girl named Ann was so lonely living in her new town.  In all the cabins that lay between her home and the nearest settlement were only boys and babies.  She missed her cousins and all of her friends.  Her mother promised to have some type of celebration, but they didn’t know what kind of celebration to have until a stranger rode up the hill and stayed still supper.  That was their celebration.  Ann thought that it was a great party.  She then thought that there was not any other place that she would rather be than there with her family building the West.

 

            Missing May  By Cynthia Rylant  1993 Newberry Award Medal Winner

            When six year old Summer’s mother dies, she is passed from one relative to another until her Uncle Ob and Aunt May arrives.  Summer goes to live with them in Deep Water.  During this time Ob and May’s love grows for Summer.  Summer starts to feel like she has a family.  Six years later when she is twelve her Aunt May dies and all that love she felt turned into grief.  Summer and Uncle Ob couldn’t find joy in their lives until one of Summer’s classmates, Cletus Underwood, comes into their lives.  The story goes on with Ob, Summer and Cletus searching for signs and symbols of Aunt May. 

 

            Double Trouble  By Judy Bloom

            Fudge’s new theme song is money, money, money!  He wants to make enough fudge bucks to buy the whole world.  His latest obsession is driving his brother Peter crazy, but what Peter doesn’t know is that he has annoying little cousins that are coming to stay with him.  Fudge gets jealous of the cousins and goes crazy himself wanting more money, money, money!

The Giver  By Lois Lowry  Newberry Award winner

            Everyone in the city has a specific job and it is determined by their emotions, mentality and physical strengths.  Every family has a mother, father and one child from each sex.  There is no crime or disease in this place.  Jonas, the main character, is given the best job of all the “receiver of memory”.  His job is to listen to all situations and base the outcomes on the history from his memory.

 

            Animal Farm George Orwell

            Mr. Jones owns a farm called Manor Farm.  All of his animals plat a rebellion against him.  It all starts when he forgets to feed them so they chase him off the farm.  The name of the farm is now changed to Animal Farm.  The rebellion is a success, but Jones comes back to try to retake his farm. It doesn’t work and the animals keep the farm to their selves.

 

            Fahrenheit 451   By Ray Bradbury

            Is based on the future.  People in these towns are not allowed to read books if they do then their houses and the books in them are to be burned. A guy comes up with a plan to get rid of the law.  Their houses were next to be burned.  The guy who came up with the plan to get rid of the law got really mad and kills a man.  He goes and hides, and fakes his death and starts up new towns.
