The Cavalier South was a community of aristocracy. Their society was controlled by the land owners, who used slaves to produce their wealth in the plantations. Much of the Cavalier South thought of themselves as "protectors of American democracy."
The Cavalier Code: Duty. Honor. Country. The duty of the men was to uphold the pride of their family and of the South and it relied mainly on their linkage to important people. Therefore, spending time with the right people was very important. Admission in certain circles and authority came from your family bloodline. Besides their plantations, wealth, well-known hospitality, and Southern pride, there were the Public Arena, the Political Arena, Religious Arena, and Important Speakers that played important roles in the molding of the Rhetorical Discourse of the Cavalier Community.
