Moving, Deleting, and Renaming Folders in Windows

Getting Started
Right click on Start
and select EXPLORE. Your window will
be divided into three distinct areas.
1.
top Menu Area
2.
left Folder Window
3.
right Folder/File Window
The 1st thing you notice is the (+) and (-) next to various folders
·
(+) is an
indicator that a folder resides within this folder but is not currently visible
within the Folder Window.
·
(-) indicators
the folder has been expanded to display any subfolders within and are immediately
displayed directly below.
·
The lack of (+) or (-) means there are no folders within that folder.
In the Folder Window on the left, examine the folder tree
(directory tree) structure.
·
Click once to open or close a folder
·
Click once on Local Disk (C:) to close subfolders.
·
Click once again on Local Disk (C:) to expand the
folders.

Creating Folders.
The window on the right displays folders and files. You
must work from the Folder/Files Window to add a folder to the Local disk (C:).
Right click in a blank area within the Folder/File Window to
display the pop up menu for New —> Folder options
See sample below.

This option creates a new folder called New Folder. While it is still
blue, change the name to OTS 430 and
enter.

Folders and documents will be out of order and
probably out of alignment. Pointing to a blank area within this same window, right clicking will give you the option
to Arrange Icons —> by Name.

Open the OTS
430 folder in either window by single
clicking from the Folder Window or by double clicking on the folder itself
within the Folder/Files Window on the right. You are now in the OTS 430 folder.
There is nothing in this new folder yet.
Create 3 new folders within this folder by right
clicking in a blank area within the Folder/Files Window on the right and repeat
instruction for New —> Folder. Name
the folders as shown below.
1.
Assignments
2.
Articles
3.
Reference Materials
Open the
Articles folder and create 2 new folders by right clicking
in a blank area within the Folder/Files Window on the right and repeat
instruction for New —> Folder. Name
the folders as shown below.
1.
Article Reviews
2.
Article Summaries
Notice the Folders window again updates automatically
to reflect the new folders and a (+)
indicator is displayed before Articles to indicate there are folders within
this folder.
See sample below.

Moving Folders
Click and
drag can be used to move folders and documents
from one location to another from either window. From the Folders Window on the left, click
and drag the Article Summary folder and drop over the Articles Review Folder. The folder tree has changed
to reflect Articles —> Article Review
—> Article Summaries.
Now click and
drag the Articles folder and drop
over the Reference Materials Folder. This carries all of the folder and
files that are within the Articles folder to inside the Reference Materials folder.
Deleting Folders
From either window, right click on the folder to be deleted. In this case we are going
to delete the Article Summaries folder
as shown below. Select Delete from
the pop up menu and click.

Renaming Folders
Use either
window to rename a folder. Right click on the folder to be renamed and select RENAME.
