"Elijah Combs Baker was born April 11, 1825(?) I have seen this date numerous times on the net....may have been from a cemetary record. I do question this date. The 1850 Harlan County, KY Census lists him aged 23, 1860 Harlan County, KY Census aged 32, and 1880 Gove County, Kansas aged 52, Also his father Wilson Baker does not appear on the Perry County Tax rolls until 1827. I sometimes wonder if E.C. Baker was born in 1827 in Perry County, Kentucky. Rumor has it that E.C. Bakers' parents were a Wilson Baker and Sarah "Sally" Fields......(still working on birth dates.....the census reports seem inaccurate...which completely disputes what I said above about E.C. B-day :) ) Sarah Fields seems to have been the daughter of Kentucky pioneer and Revolutinary War Vet. John Fields. This may account for E.C. Bakers namesake. John Fields and Elijah Combs, both heros in thier own time, lived near each other as reported by the Clay County taxs rolls of 1807 and 1811. Also reported in Clay County in 1810 and 1820 Census reports. There may have been a strong friendship or admiration between the two accounting for John's daughter naming her first born after Elijah Combs. (Just speculation)
Elijah Combs Baker married Jane "Jenny" Lewis December 1, 1847 performed by John Lewis JP(justice of the Peace)(Harlan County marriages, Harlan County Book A 1818 to 1905) they had the following children
1. John Lewis Baker (perhaps named for Elijah's grandfather or for Jane Lewis' father) Born September 30, 1848 in Harlan County Kentucky. He was still living in 1930 in Grant County, Oklahoma with his Son Hiram E. Baker. I do not as of yet have a death date.
J.L. Baker married Amie Tucker, daughter of Hiram and Amie Tucker, in Kansas shortly after 1880. they had thier first child in 1881(per 1900 Kansas census) name Hiram Eligah Baker. they had six children of which three lived into adulthood. J.L. Baker and Amie Tucker met while working on a Nursery Farm for a James A Masher or Mosher (?) in Scandia Township, Republic County, Kansas. John was a general laborer. Amie was a servant for the farm owners family.
2. Wilson N. Baker (perhaps named for his grandfather, Elijah's father) born November 24, 1852 (Harlan County births 1852) as far as I can tell Wilson Baker never married. he was still living in 1930. He lived with is Nephew Hiram E. Baker and brother John L. Baker.
3. Sarah "Sally" Baker (perhaps named for Elijah's mother) She was born in 1850, before Feb. 11, 1850. She was born in Perry County, Kentucky according to info on death Cert. Sarah Baker is listed on the Harlan County death records 1853. Information states she died of croup on February 11, 1853 at aged 3. Parents listed as Elijah Combs Baker and Jane Lewis.
4. Mary E. Baker was born in 1851 in Harlan County around September according to info. on death Cert. Mary E. Baker is listed on the Harlan County death records 1853. Information states she died of croup February 4, 1853 aged 1 1/2.
5. A Morgan Baker was born to Elijah Combs Baker and Jane Lewis (Harlan County Birth records 1854) May 16, 1854. The 1860 Census report lists a child living with Elijah in harlan County aged 6 (named Bazzel) Chris Thomas reported a Basil Marion Baker was born in 1854 in Harlan County, Kentucky. Maybe same person (maybe Bazzel Morgan or Morgan Bazzel Baker....)(?)
6. Atheritta baker (spelling taken from 1860 Harlan County Census) seems she was born sometime in 1856. Aged 4 on Census report.
no other info as of yet.
7. Leah Baker born in 1858 Harlan County, Kentucky. aged 2 years old as reported on 1860 census. no other info as of yet.

Elijah C. Baker enlisted in the Union army December 12, 1861. he enlisted as a sergeant Company D, 19th Kentuckty Infantry. This regiment was recruited and organized at Harrodsburg, KY in the fall of 1861. it was mustered into service Jan 2, 1862.
E.C. Baker promoted to Full Sergeant 1st Class on Fe 16, 1863
Promoted to Full Lieutenant 2nd Class on March 10, 1863
Promoted to Full Lieutenant 1st Class on April 12, 1863
Mustered out of Company D, 19th Infantry Regiment Kentucky on 26 January 1865 in Louisville, KY.
I have gathered extensive info on the movement and regimental history if interested.
Sometime after August 7, 1860 and before May 4 1869.....Jane Lewis passed away. There is a Nancy Baker born Dec 20, 1866 in Harlan County Kentucky......I suspect that this child may have been Jane Lewis' not sure though. she may have died shortly afer Nancy's birth date. Don Chesnut and Chris Thomas report That Betsy A. Baker was born sometime in 1869.(1880 census report reports 1867) it is also possible that this is also Jane Lewis' child.....this proves difficult thought.........E.C. Baker married Mary Smith May 4, 1869. Albert Lewis (JP) E.C. Baker and Robin Baker witnesses.....(Robin Baker was Robert Baker E.C. Baker's youngest brother) (Harlan County Marriages Harlan County Marriage Book A 1818 to 1905)
Sometime after Feb 3, 1870 ( E.C. Baker witnessed his younger sister's marriage to Gilbert Lewis) and Grant Baker's birth on April 6, 1870 in Harlan County, Kentucky...E.C. Baker and his family made the trip to Republic County Kansas....arriving there sometime before March 9, 1871.
Don Chesnut and Chris Thomas lists the following children born to the Union of E.C. Baker and Mary Smith (I have not really researched this....but the ages listed below match well with the 1880 Kansas Census Report.
1. Grant Baker April 6, 1870 Harlan County, Kentucky
2. Mary Bainbridge Baker March 9, 1871, in Belleville, Republic County, Kansas
3. Sherman Baker May 25, 1873 in Belleville, Republic County, Kansas
