Little Bit About Moby

Moby was born in New York City on September 11, 1965 as Richard Melville Hall. He was nicknamed Moby since he was a little boy, being a direct descendant of "Moby Dick" author Herman Melville. His father was killed in an accident when he was two, so his mother took him to Connecticut to raise him with his grandmother.

His mother always tried to push Moby creatively, so by the age of ten, he was already proficient on the classical guitar. This continued as he grew, and he was in several different bands, such as The Vatican Commandoes, Flipper, and Ultra Vivid Scene. These bands played much different music than he would later become known for, they were mostly punk and harder stuff, but he was always pushing the limit musically.

Moby's first single to attract the rave scene was "Go", which sampled Twin Peaks, and gave him the title of "Techno's first star". He soon released "Everything is Wrong", his first full-length cd. Then a tour with Lollapalooza in 1995, after which he released two completely different cds around the same time. "Animal Rights" was a throwback to his more punk roots, and "The End of Everything", recorded as Voodoo Child, was a glimpse at the future Moby with hauntingly beautiful songs.

"I Like To Score" came out in 1997, and was a compilation of songs that Moby had done for various soundtracks. It also introduced a hip-hop beat to his music that later would be seen in "Play". When "Play" was first released in 1998, it got almost no air time until Moby started to sell his songs to companies for use in movies or commercials. As more people came to hear it, the songs were finally played, and the record has now gone quadruple platinum!!!

He has just released "Mobysongs", which is a disc full of older songs taken from everything before "Play". Moby has worked with everyone from the Butthole Surfers to Guns 'n Roses, and remixed songs for the B-52's and Micheal Jackson, and we hope that he continues to make his beautiful music far into the new millenium!
