Baker Site - 1952

Eagle
From Our Advantage Point We Could Sometimes Watch The Fighting
Going On Below Us. Across From Us Was A Wide Valley And
Another Mountain On Which Was An Air Force AC&W Site
(Aircraft Early Warning Radar Station). During Days When We Were
Not On Duty In The Radio Room We Watched As Jets (Both Ours
And English) Come Flying Fast, Up And Down The Valley To And
From Missions. They Were F86's & British Gloster Meteor's. This was
An Awe Inspiring Thing To See. Some Times They Would Give
Us A Show By Pulling Back On The Stick And Climbing Straight
Up Into The Sky With After-Burners Going. We Also Watched The
Mash Unit Helicopters Bringing Wounded GI's From the Front.

Our Perimeter Was Covered With Barbed Wire Rolls and Trip Flares And
Grenades. One Night Trip Flares And Grenades Started Going Off. We All
Hit Our Assigned Trench And Started Shooting And Throwing Hand Grenades
Into The Areas Where The Flares Had Gone Off. No More Action Occurred
That Night. The Next Morning We Were Told The AP's Went Down The
Mountain Looking For The Infiltrators. In A Village They Found Three
Of the North Koreans Hiding, Including The Injured Ones. They Turned
Them Over To A Marine Unit Not Far Away.

Some Of The Food We Had Were Big Tins Of Spam. I Love Spam
Sandwiches. One Night About Nine O'clock While On Duty, I Went
To The Mess Quonset And Made Me A Big Spam Sandwich With
Catsup On It. Just As I Opened The Door, A Trip Flare Went Off.
I Pitched My Wonderful Sandwich Into The Air And, As They Say,
Hit The Dirt. As I Was Crawling To My Tent, Others Were Coming
Out And Crawling Over the Top Of Me On Their Way To The Trench's.
That Was All That Happened That Night. We Figured It Was Pheasants,
Which Korea Has A Lot Of.
