• Selected by university-wide search as one of ten instructors for OSU's annual Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA) mentor workshops; three day training sessions attended by all new teaching assistants at Ohio State.
• OSU EEOB Department Graduate Teaching Award, 1994.
• Selected by university-wide search as one of four GTAs with exceptional communication skills to act as instructors for international GTAs for whom English is not their native language.
• Selected as one of two graduate directors of an ongoing mentor program that develops field-specific teaching skills in Biological Science GTAs at Ohio State. Responsible for development of curriculum and all materials used in this program. Hosted workshops on motivating undergraduates, lab teaching and use of multimedia resources in the classroom. Author of constitution for this official organization.
• Regular invited speaker for international graduate students undergoing Ohio State's Spoken English Program. I address cultural and linguistic issues relating to the American classroom and the international teaching assistant experience.
• Led OSU undergraduates and Columbus Zoo volunteers on four collecting / photographic / educational field trips to Big Pine Key, Florida (1992, 1993, 1994, 1995) Obtained collecting permit from F.D.N.R for these trips.

Curriculum Development:

• Curriculum development for The Ohio State University's capstone 400 level undergraduate Zoology class; "Introduction to Animal Diversity". Author of lab manual for this class. Designed and constructed more than one dozen (mainly marine) display aquaria and pioneered their use as the major teaching resource in introductory Zoology classes. Author of maintenance manual and instructional video guide for these aquaria. Training of staff and teaching assistants with these materials.
• Elected five times as graduate student representative on departmental curriculum committee. Responsible for new class evaluation and other matters relating to undergraduate and graduate curriculum development. Active in overhaul of the Zoology major and construction of a new core curriculum.
• Responsible for developing curriculum and materials for Biology 101 and 102 evening classes at The Ohio State University. These introductory Biology classes were designed mainly for non-traditional students with limited science background.

• Acknowledged in: Oakley, Berl R., Oakley, C. Elizabeth, Yoon, Yisang, and Jung, M. Katherine. "Gamma-tubulin is a component of the spindle pole body that is essential for microtubule function in Aspergillus nidulans." Cell, 61: 1289-1301 (1990). This paper was chosen for inclusion in a volume called "Landmark Papers in Cell Biology.  This is a volume published by the American Society for Cell Biology and The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press.  It celebrates the first forty years of the ASCB.  Papers were chosen on the basis of their significance for the field of Cell Biology and only 42 papers were selected.

Professional Service:

• Reviewer for 2nd edition of "Concepts in Zoology" for Harper Collins publishers.
• Development and supervision of Zoology Department' s video-graphic capabilities. Obtained funding for new equipment. Responsible for systems integration, training and advising staff and students in the use of this equipment.
• Produced instructional video guide to dissections used in OSU Zoology classes. This video also used in selected New York City Schools.
• Construction of algal scrubber / Caulerpa culture facility at Columbus Zoo for use in teaching and research.
• Numerous presentations on science and marine careers at local schools. Called on an average of two - three times a month to perform this service. Presentations include video and other AV. material and have been given to students ranging from grades 6 to 12.
• Constructed educational aquatic ecosystem at South Side Settlement House, Cols., OH.
• Founder and student leader of The Ohio State University Biological Science Teaching Associate Society (BIOTAS), a student organization dedicated to professional development of Teaching Associates.

 
• 1999-2000. Graduate associate abstracter for the Eisenhower National Clearing House for Mathematics and Science Education.
• Extensive experience with aquarium systems including design, construction and maintenance, field collection of specimens, vertebrate and invertebrate husbandry. Primary supervisor of Ohio State's marine and freshwater artificial ecosystem (microcosm) displays. Responsible for training of technicians and instructors.
• Design and construction of artificial ecosystem (microcosm) display for use as educational tool at Tremont Elementary School, Upper Arlington Schools, Ohio. Responsible for training teachers in the use of this facility and numerous educational presentations of students in grades K-5.
• Computer literate with extensive experience in video and graphics technology. Experience includes video capture, digital editing, chroma-keying, image enhancement, use of Photoshop, Director, Authorware, Premiere, Final Cut, Hypercard and other leading graphics software. I also have experience with dynamic web-page authoring, network administration and software / hardware troubleshooting .
• Completed PADI rescue diver certification, own all my own dive gear and underwater photography equipment.
• Large personal portfolio of Histology, Marine and Zoology slides, digital images and video footage.
• Diverse experience in theater, video and film production including lighting, camera operation, analog video-editing and professional acting. These experiences helped me to form my philosophies on the communication and presentation of ideas as entertainment. Considered a dynamic, confident, highly animated speaker with a flair for the effective communication of complex ideas to a diverse audience.
• Served as a volunteer primary school teacher's aid and and assistant scout leader in the U.K. Served as a volunteer mentor with Franklin County Children's Services in the U.S.
• Two years with the British Territorial Army, 94 Squadron, Royal Berkshire Yeomanary as a Radio Operator (signalman).
