I’m not sure this should be considered a shooter, it does have the earmarks, 2D movement, power ups, scrolling space levels, bosses, BUT and it’s a big but too, this game plays like the bastard child of Arknoid. Your ship is equipped with a forward shield which like the paddle in Arknoid is used to bounce a ball into enemies and obstacles. Your ship can take damage by running into things, and you can die that way but more likely you’ll die because a ball drops.
You start up the game in either practice or challenge (the difference being practice doesn’t seem to have enemies) a ball drops from the top to your ship and game play starts by pressing the boost button you can launch it forward other wise it just bounces pathetically, so you tend to just hit boost most of the time. Also by bouncing the ball into crystals you can get power ups which can be used at the press of a button, things like your ball emitting a ‘power ring’ basically a panic bomb, or lasers. Enemies 9which can be shot down) come in and drop obstructions on top of what is already there. By collecting the letters ABC in order you can get an extra ball and instant power ups like split ball are to be found. Also holding boost will cause your ball to return to you automatically at the cost of a ‘ball return’ token.
The level design is what makes this game an actual challenge, the levels are knobby and turn at right angles fairly often calling for you to both navigate your ship around any undestroyed obstacles and aim fairly well at small gaps with your ball.
The game play manages to be fairly fun and not feel to much like Arknoid.
The graphics a are fairly simple but well done and well animated, every brick has spiny rotatey bits and the ball looks quite good.
Score: 7: Not really a shooter but not bad
