Most people know me have heard me speak of a seemingly unknown carbonated drink known as Faygo. And some people wonder, "What is Faygo?"
What is Faygo?
That is the question. Well to take it literally, Faygo is pop, with many different flavors ranging from Moon Mist and Rootbeer to Black Cherry and Candy Apple. It's extremely cheap, and a band called Insane Clown Posse grew up on it and routinely shower their fans with it.
I grew up on it as well, for i came from a family that was on the line between middle and lower class. Enough about me, and more about the best pop in the world, beginning with a timeline.
1900's
Ben and Perry Feigenson, who were bakers in Russia, began Feigenson Brothers Bottling Works on November 4, 1907 in Detroit. Their original flavors, Fruit Punch, Strawberry and Grape, were based upon their own cake frosting recipes. That's why these, and the flavors they developed later, were and still are so unique. They produced the soda on one day, closed the factory the next day, loaded the product on a horse drawn wagon and sold it for 3 cents, or two for a nickel.
1910's The families added Lithiated Lemon and Sassafras Soda/Rootbeer to their product line. They also began calling their products pop because of the sound made when opening the bottle.
1920's They changed the brand name to "Faygo" and came up with some more new products, "Rock & Rye" and "Vanilla" and "Seltzer"
1930's They added fresh orange juice to their Orange Soda and they moved to its current Detroit location on Gratiot Avenue.
1940's Faygo created a new, richer Root Beer and introduced "UpTown", a lemon lime soda.
1950's The animated "Faygo Kid" commercial appeared on television with the famous line "Which Way did he go? Which way did he go? He went for Faaaayygooooo!"
1960's Faygo changed the name of Strawberry Soda officially to "Red Pop" and introduced "Frosh" "Faygo Brau" and "Chateaux Faygeaux". Only "Frosh" remains.
1970's Alex Karras, Detroit Lions star and actor became the spokesman for all Faygo diet products.
1980's Faygo launched a line of Flavored sparkling waters and was purchased by National Beverage Corp. of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
1990's Faygo introduced Cherry Festival, made with real Michigan cheries, and named for the annual Traverse City, Michigan event. Faygo launched its first effort with non carbonated products in 1996. Named "Ohana," (hawaiian for "family") there are Punch, Mango Punch, Lemon Iced Tea, Lemonade, and Kiwi-Strawberry. 1997 Faygo celebrated its 90th anniversary with a contest to create a special edition Anniversary Recipe Book.
2000 and beyond... In 2002, Faygo will celebrate its 95th anniversary with more new Faygo flavors!!!!
