We are coming to the end of a long holiday. It’s the nice thing about working in Indonesia; there are lots of holidays.
We had planned to drive to Bali. We were going to leave at six in the morning and drive for ten hours until we got to Banyuwangi, where we’d drive aboard the ferry for the short hop to Gili Manuk.
We set out, almost on time, and were cruising along the toll. Then the van(Isuzu Panther) started acting up. After about ten minutes it seemed wise to pull over and pop the hood. The smoke was already pouring out. Thankfully we had a case of large water bottles. Emily, the smarter-half of this marriage, is an incredibly organized and prepared woman. Our driver gingerly unscrewed the cap of the radiator. A cloud of steam poured out, and kept pouring out. One after another, seven or eight large bottles of water were poured onto and into the radiator.
Emily called her brother-in-law and got the name of the toll’s towing service. Then we waited. Then we waited, and waited some more. The truck finally came. Anxious moments passed while they checked, and talked, and smoked. I started snapping pictures.
The consensus was not good. We’d need to be towed off the toll, and then from there to a Bengkel (repair shop/garage).
The Panther was linked to the truck and pulled along the road. We arrived at the Izusu shop and the waiting resumed. Poor Wyatt was bored out of his five-year old mind. We started exploring. We found a collection of nuts, bolts and screws on the floor, making a game of seeing how many we could find. We topped out at eight altogether.
After about two hours that seemed like six due to the heat and inactivity we headed back home. At home it was my turned to be bored, impatient, and immature - generally a pain in the butt. I really wanted this vacation. in fact, I needed this vacation. In moments, that I’m sure reached Shatneresque-peaks of drama, I proclaimed my need to get out of the city.
Emily finally sorted it out and we flew to Bali. As we sat in the lounge waiting to board Emily realized that I did not have my trusty backpack. I went racing through the airport and finally to the original entrance where I found my bag sitting on top of the scanner. I had evidently left it there.
“Can you prove this is yours?”
“Yeah, I’m an English teacher and I still have a few books in here.”
The security looked skeptical. Then I remembered the toll. “My camera is in here and I have pictures of us on the toll.”
Sure enough, there the shots were.
“Carry on, Sir.” ( or something like that)
We made it to Bali.

Happy New Year
My hopes for the New Year
This year I hope to make myself understood.
I hope to be more clear with what I say and what I intentionally communicate. I hope to better understand things I’m unintentionally communicating. I hope to communicate better with my wife, my children and my students.
For all of you, I hope life is good
Holidays
We're on holiday.
That should be good, but it has a downside.
I'm crap with free-time.
We decided to head to Tanjung Kodok.
Anyone of you out there with the barest grasp of Indonesian knows that Kodok is frog. Here was this Villa surrounded by clay frogs.
Ah, but the story doesn't begin there.
We were to meet the other parents and assorted kidlets at Linda's house. We arrived dutifully at 8:00am. Stupid us.
After assorted fits and starts we got going at 9:30am.
The car was packed with gear, luggage and small things that made horrendous noise.
After a two-hour drive we arrived at the villa. It was very nice, very modern, and for the first 10 minutes it was clean and looked like it might be a relaxing couple of days.
Ha
First day we visited the zoo
Less a zoo than a strange park that animals live in.
I will post pictures
That afternoon we stopped at a restaurant and I ordered the Gule Kambing(goat Chowder) ...one of my favourites. It wasn't the bits of bone, it wasn't the fat, it wasn't even the rawhide presented as edible, it was the chili that made me push this away away after two valiant attempts to eat it. This dish is one of the more subtly-flavoured experiences you can have here. The tender meat, the play of various spices, the rich aroma. To place this crap before anyone is a insult to food, goats, diners and Indonesia.
That afternoon I took some photos around the rocky beach.
I was congratulating Emily and myself on how well behaved Wyatt was in comparison to the hellions that are his classmates.
The next day was Wyatt's.
Now I want to preface this ...Wyatt is a well-behaved, but active kid. He's usually a good-traveler.
It started simply enough. We had breakfast at the hotel. Good.
Wyatt acted up a little. After a few calming words from dad he sat still, or as still as any four year old sits. I got the lecture on how loud my voice is. It is.
We headed from the park.
Wyatt and I both had swim suits under our clothes and were prepared to quick change as soon as water appeared. When Wyatt learned swimming was later he voiced his concerns. Man, and they thought I was loud.
This went on at every attraction. Bumper cars(once he was in, he was fine),helicopter ride, small roller-coaster, ATV bikes,go Karts after the rides ended, the noise began again.
Finally we got to the swimming.
We survived.
This year ... start the new year with a new direction

Surabaya is at once familiar, and strange. The streets look the same, and many people, family and friends, are still here - but there are new places and newer faces.
Surabaya has some wonderful things to experience.
Great weather, except for the rain.
Great food. Surabaya has a mix of Chinese, Indonesian, western and Korean restaurants. Some are inexpensive, many are not.
Good people. These are not the imagined terrors of a hundred overdone news reports.
Just average people living fairly average lives.
We spent half of last year in Korea. We returned to Indonesia in November. I'm back with English First again. Emily is back at work exporting seafood. She is also running a small catering business. This year she has started to export sea snails. Hello there. It's been a long time between updates. We have recently moved to South Korea. It is exciting and difficult. It is always exciting to be in a new place, struggle with a new language, and adjust to a new system. All those things are also difficult. Add to that the difficulty of being away from family. Emily is here with me.
