Sketchbook Images II

One of the central elements in these sketches - or may be I should say studies - is the creating of space on a two dimentional surface which can not exist in the three dimentional world... This space can only exist on a 2-D (two-dimentional) surface. It is a space which can be understood (or may be held) in the mind, but it can not exist in the physical world around us - or can it?... I like to create and play with this kind of space. There are additional criteria (limitations/considerations) that I set for myself in these pieces as well...

\-\\-/|O Searching

I like the texture in this ink wash. It adds another element of depth to the space.

This is just me searching. A way of playing and exploring...

Friends

(for me this could easily be the title for this piece... so I have left it...)

Sometimes I title sketches and sometimes I don't. I really do not care for my pieces being labled "Untitiled #1", "Untitiled #2" and so on... So if I am going to show something - even if it is just a sketch, I like to give it a title...

Special Events

(this is not really my title either - but I liked it, so I have left it too...)

I try to stay away from creating light and shadow in these pieces. The wash in this one created this effect on it's own. It reminds me of a beautiful, glowing, stormy, windy, swirling sky...

In the initial glance, the "+" in this sketch feels like it is suspended solidly from the corner above... then I realize that this corner is just a dark triangle floating on the white background...
