American Beauty is a brilliant film written by Alan Ball and directed by Sam Mendes. It is a movie that captivates you from begining to end and is one you will want to see again and again. Kevin Spacey stars as Lester Burnham, a forty two year old writer, who lives with his wife Caroline,played by Annette Bening, and daughter Jane,played by Thora Birch . Spacey is an under-sexed father who is unhappy with his job and neglected by his family. He frequently has fantasies about his daughter's friend Angela Hayes,played by Mena Suvari. Bening is an over-achieving,struggeling, real estate agent who longs to be the best agent in town, just like Buddy "The King" Kane,played by Peter Gallagher. Birch is suffering from the traumas of teenage life and thinks her parents should take a more active role. She meets the new boy next door,Ricky Fitts,played by Wes Bentley,and discovers she is not the only one dealing with the punches life throws. Each character takes you on their journey of re-birth, as they learn valuable lessons in life and re-discover themselves. If you have yet to see the film it is a must. American Beauty is rated "R".
