NOKOGIRI-YAMA, CHIBA
On 11 October, we took a trip across the Bay (Tokyo Wan) by ferry and ended up in Hamakanaya. From the fery port, we hiked up to a Tram Station, and took the tram up to the top of Mt Nokogiri to see the Nihon-Ji, a Buddhist Temple complex founded in the year 725. Unique to this area, besides a great view of the Wan, the Miura Peninsula where we live, and the Kanto Plain, is Japan's largest carved Buddha, standing 31 meters tall. It was built in 1783, and restored in 1965. There are also many smaller carved Buddhas around the grounds, and some great hiking trails. It was a fun day.
In Front of the Daibutsu
The family lines up for a picture. If only we could get the kids to smile.
The Hundred Shaku Kwan-non
A cool carving into the side of the mountain. This translates to the Goddess of Mercy.
Across the Wan
Here is the view across Tokyo Wan to the Miura Peninsula. If you look really closely, you can see Mt Fuji. Actually, we had to get a little higher above the pollution line before we had a good view.
