Between San Severo and Lucera

San Severo

Bianco: is produced from Bombino bianco and Trebbiano toscano grapes for 40% to 60%, Malvasia bianca lunga and Verdeca up to 20%. The wine should be drank during its first year and served a 8 degrees. Rosato: is produced from Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Sangiovese (up to 30%) grapes. The wine is dry, should be served at a temperature of 12 degreesand is at its best during its first year. Rosso: is produced from the same grapes as the Rosato. On the palate it is dry and may be kept for up to 3 years. It is best suited for lamb dishes and should be served at 18 degrees.

Wines from around the Ofanto river

  • Castel del Monte Bianco: this dry white wine is produced mainly from Pampanuto grapes. Other grapes include Trebbiano toscano, Trebbiano giallo, Bombino bianco and Palumbo (up tp 35%). Its alcohol content is 11.5% and it's recommended for fish and fried dishes. It should be drunk within its first year, the bottle should be stored vertically and the wine served at 10 degrees.
  • Castel del Monte Rosato: this dry rose' wine is produced mainly from Bombino nero grapes. Other grapes include Uva di Troia and Montepulciano (up to 35%). Its alcohol content is 11.5 per cent and is recommended for fish soups, shell fish and eal dishes. It may be kept for up to 2 years. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 8 to 10 degrees.
  • Castel del Monte Rosso: this dry and slightly tannic red wine is produced mainly from Uva di Troia grapes. Other grapes include Bombino nero, Montepulciano and Sangiovese (up to 35%). Its alcohol content is 12 per cent and may kept for up to 4 years. It is recommended for roast meat dishes like lamb. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 18 degrees.
  • Castel del Monte Rosso Riserva: it's the same wine as the above one, but this one is aged for at least 3 years and its alcohol content is 12.5 per cent. It may be kept for up to 5 years. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at room temperature.
  • Moscato di Trani Dolce Naturale: this sweet white wine is produced from Moscato bianco grapes and its alcohol content is 15 per cent. It may be kept for 2 to 3 years but it's at its best during the first one. It is recommended to accompany cooked desserts, the bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 10 degrees.
  • Moscato di Trani Liquoroso: it's the above wine with a higher alcohol content of 18 per cent. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 10 degrees.
  • Orta Nova Rosato: it is produced from Sangiovese grapes. However, other grapes, like Lambrusco Maestri, Montepulciano, Trebbiano toscano and Uva di Troia may be added, but only up to 40% of the total quantity. The Lambrusco Maestri and the Trebbiano toscano can only represent 10% each of the total amount. On the palate it is dry and its alcohol content is 11.5 per cent. It should be drunk during its first year and served at 12 degrees.
  • Orta Nova Rosso: this red wine is made from the same grapes as the Rosato. It is dry on the palate and tannic. Its alcohol content is 12 per cent. It may be kept for up to 3 years and served at a temperature of 18 degrees.
  • Rosso Barletta: this full bodied and dry red wine is produced from the following grapes: Uva di Troia, Malbeck, Montepulciano, Sangiovese. Its alcohol content is 12 per cent and it may be kept for up to 4 years. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 18 degrees.
  • Rosso Barletta Invecchiato: this is the same wine as the above, but it has been aged for 2 years before being bottled. It may be kept for 3 to 4 years after that. It is suited to accompany red meat dishes like roasts. The wine should be served at room temperature.
  • Rosso Canosa: this dry, full bodied, slightly bitter red wine is produced mainly from Uva di Troia grapes (65%). Other grapes include Montepulciano and/or Sangiovese and its alcohol content is 12 per cent. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 18 degrees.
  • Rosso Canosa Riserva: this is the same type as the above wine, but it has been aged for 2 years before being bottled and its alcohol content is 13 per cent. It may be kept up to its 4th and 5th year and should be served at room temperature.
  • Rosso di Cerignola: this dry, medium bodied and slightly bitter red wine is produced from the following grapes: Uva di Troia (55%), Negro amarao (15% to 30%), Sangiovese, Barbera, Montepulciano, Malbeck, Trebbiano toscano (up to 15%). Its alcohol content is 12 per cent and may be kept for up to 4 years. It is suitable to accompany all type of food, the bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 18 degrees.
  • Rosso di Cerignola Riserva: this wine is the same type as the above one, but it has been aged for 2 years before being bottled and its alcohol content is 13 per cent. It is suitable for red meat dishes and game. It is at its best during its 3rd and 4rt years, the bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at room temperature.

From the Trulli to the Salento area

  • Alezio Rosato: the grapes used in the production of this wine are Negro amaro. Malvasia nera di Lecce, Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes may be added, providing they all grow in the same vineyard, and up to a maximum amount of 20%. On the palate it is dry with a slightly bitter hint. Its alcohol content is 12 per cent. It should not be kept for more than 2 years. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 14 degrees.
  • Alezio Rosso: is produced from the same grapes as the above wine. It is a red wine and its colour tends to become orange with the passing of time. On the palate it is dry, somewhat tannic with a slightly bitter taste. It is best suited for meat dishes. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 18 degrees.
  • Alezio Rosso Riserva: it is produced from the same grapes as the above but has been aged for at least 2 years. Its alcohol content is 12.5 per cent. It may be kept for up to 5 years. It is best suited to accompany roast dishes and strong cheese, like pecorino . The bottle should be stored in a horizontal position and the wine served at room temperature.
  • Brindisi Rosato: this dry and slightly bitter rose' wine is produced from the following grapes: Negro amaro, Malvasia nera di Brindisi, Sussumaniello, Montepulciano and Sangiovese. Its alcohol content is 12 per cent and may be kept for up to 2 years. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at between 12 and 14 degrees.
  • Brindisi Rosso: this dry, tannic and slightly bitter red wine is produced from the same grapes as the above wine and its alcohol content is 12 per cent. It may be kept for 4 years and is suitable for all types of food. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 18 degrees.
  • Brindisi Rosso Riserva: this is the above wine that has been aged for 2 years and its alcohol content is 12.5 per cent. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 18 degrees.
  • Copertino Rosato: this dry and slightly bitter rose' wine is produced from the following grapes: Negro amaro, Malvasia nera di Lecce, Malvasia nera di Brindisi, Montepulciano, Sangiovese. Its alcohol content is 12 per cent and may be kept for a couple of years. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 12 degrees.
  • Copertino Rosso: this dry and slightly bitter red wine is produced from the same grapes as the above and its alcohol content is 12 per cent. It is at its best until its 3rd or 4th year and is recommended to accompany all types of food. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 18 degrees.
  • Copertino Rosso Riserva: it's the same variety as the above wine, but its alcohol content is 12.5 per cent and it has been aged for 2 years before being bottled. It may be kept for another 3 years and is best suited to accompany red meat dishes. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at room temperature.
  • Gravina Amabile: this semi-sweet and fresh tasting white wine is produced from the following grapes: Malvasia del Chianti (40% to 60%), Greco di Tufo and/or Bianco d'Alessano (35% to 60%), Bombino bianco and/or Trebbiano toscano and/or Verdeca (up to 10%). Its alcohol content is 11 per cent and should be drunk within its first year. The bottle should be stored vertically and the wine served at 8 degrees.
  • Gravina Asciutto o Secco: it's the same variety as the above wine, but this one is either asciutto or secco . It is recommended for fish dishes and should be served at 8 degrees.
  • Gravina Spumante: it's the spumante type of the above mentioned wine. It should be served at 6 degrees.

Leverano Bianco

Sardegna

The Regional Wines

  • Cannonau di Sardegna Rosato Amabile: this wine is produced from Cannonau grapes. At times also other grapes are used: Bovale Grande, Bovale Sardo, Carignano, Pascale di Cagliari, Vernaccia di San Gimignano (up to 10% and up to 5% for the Vernaccia). The wine's colour is pink and on the palate it is semi-sweet. Its alcohol content is 13.5 per cent and is at its best until its second year. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at a temperature of 12 degrees.
  • Cannonau di Sardegna Secco: this wine is dry and may be kept for up to 3 years. It is suited for accompanying roast meat like lamb, goat and pork. It should be served at 12 degrees.
  • Cannonau di Sardegna Rosso Amabile: it is produced from the same grapes as the above wines, but it is deep red and tends to acquire orange shades when aging. On the palate it is semi-sweet and its alcohol content is 13.5 per cent. It may be kept for up to 4 years and served at a temperature of 18 degrees.
  • Cannonau di Sardegna Rosso Secco: the only difference with the above wine is that this one is dry.
  • Cannonau di Sardegna Superiore Naturale Dolce: this wine must age in barrels for 2 years before being released. Its alcohol content is 15 per cent and may be kept for up to 5 years. Traditionally it is drunk at the end of a meal or as an aperitive, served at 16 degrees Centigrade. The bottle should be stored horizontally.
  • Cannonau di Sardegna Superiore Naturale Amabile: it has the same characteristics of the preceding wine, except that it is not as sweet. It may accompany roast or boiled dishes, or used as an aperitive of for desserts. It should be served at 18 degrees.
  • Cannonau di Sardegna Superiore Naturale Secco: it is similar to the 2 preceding wines but it is dry. It is best suited for accompanying game and roast dishes. It should be served at 18 degrees.
  • Cannonau di Sardegna Liquoroso Dolce Naturale: it's the Cannonau di Sardegna made sweeter. Its alcohol content is 16 per cent. It may be kept for various years and should be served at 15 degrees.
  • Cannonau di Sardegna Liquoroso Secco: it's similar to the preceding wine but is dry. It is recommended as an aperitive to be served at 15 degrees.
  • Cannonau di Sardegna Oliena o Nepente di Oliena: this name is given to the wines produced in the areas of Muravera, San Vito, Villaputzu, Villasimius.
  • Monica di Sardegna: it is produced from Monica di Sardegna grapes. Other grapes such as Pascale di Cagliari, Carignano, Bovale Grande, Bovale Sardo may go into the production, either mixed or separately, but up to a maximum of 15%. This red wine is dry on the palate and its alcohol content is 12 per cent. It can be kept for up to 3 years. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 18 degrees.
  • Monica di Sardegna Superiore: this wine is different from the preceding one for having been aged for a year and its alcohol content is 12.5 per cent. It is suited to accompany roast and barbecued meat.
  • Moscato di Sardegna Spumante: it is produced from Moscato bianco grapes, although other grapes may be used, up to a maximum of 10%. Its colour is deep yellow, on the palate it is dry. Its content in alcohol is 11.5 per cent and is at its best during the first year. It is best suited for desserts. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 6 degrees.
  • Moscato di Sardegna Tempio Pausania: it 's the version of the above wine produced in the Gallura area.
  • Moscato di Sardegna Gallura: another type of the above.

Naragus di Cagliari - Grapes: Nuragus (85% to 95%), Trebbiano toscano, Trebbiano Romagnoo, Vermentino, Clairette, Semidano (5% to 15%)
This white wine is dry, slightly acid and pleasant. Its alcohol contents are 11 per cent. It is at its best during the its first year. The bottle should be stored vertically and the wine served at 8 degrees.

Vernaccia di Oristano - Grapes: Vernaccia di Oristano
Normal type: This white wine is slightly bitter, with an alcohol content of 15 per cent. It may be kept for up to 3 years and is recommended for fish dishes. Store the bottle horizontally and serve at 10 degrees. Superiore: it has been aged for 3 years and its alcohol contents are 15.5 per cent. Liquoroso Dolce: it's the 'dolce' type with increased alcohol contents (16.5 per cent). It is best suited to accompany desserts and should be served at 12 degrees. Liquoroso Secco: it's the 'secco' type with increased alcohol contents (18 per cent). It is used as an aperitive and should be served at 6 degrees.

Sicilia

The Regional Wines

In the Odissey, Homer states that in Sicily, the land of Cyclops, people had grapes that are not sowed. Today there is no doubt that viticulture existed already when the first Greek colonisers set foot on the island.

Today vineyards in Sicily cover about 183,500 hectars for its primary production and about 1,000 for its secondary one. On the whole, every year 11,600,000 hectolitres of wine are produced, of which only 356,000 fall under the DOC category, most of which is taken up by Marsala.


From Palermo to Sciacca (North-East Section)

  • Alcamo: this wine is produced with Catarratto bianco lucido and/or comune. Up to 20% of the wine can be made from other grapes: Damaschino, Grecanico, Trebbiano toscano. It is a white wine, yellow with green shades. On the nose it is weak and slightly fruity. On the palate it is dry, fresh. It should be drunk when young, during its first year. The bottle should be stored in a vertical position and the wine served at 8 degrees.
  • Marsala: this very characteristic wine of Sicily has many different varieties (Fine Oro Dolce, Fine Oro Semisecco, Fine Oro Secco, Oro Superiore Dolce, Oro Superiore Semisecco, Oro Superiore Secco, Oro Superiore Riserva Dolce, Oro Superiore Riserva Semisecco, Oro Superiore Riserva Secco, Oro Vergine and/or Soleras, Oro Vergine and/or Soleras Stravecchio or Riserva, Fine Ambra Dolce, Fine Ambra Semisecco, Ambra Superiore Dolce, Ambra Superiore Riserva Semisecco, Ambra Superiore Riserva Secco, Ambra Vergine and/or Soleras, Ambra Vergine and/or Soleras Stravecchio or Riserva, Fine Rubino Dolce, Fine Rubino Semisecco, Fine Rubino Secco, Rubino Superiore Dolce, Rubino Superiore Semisecco, Rubino Superiore Secco, Rubino Superiore Riserva Dolce, Rubino Superiore Riserva Semisecco, Rubino Superiore Riserva Secco, Rubino Vergine and/or Soleras, Rubino Vergine and/or Soleras Stravecchio or Riserva): this wine is made from grapes coming from vineyards with Grillo and/or Catarratto bianco and/or Catarratto bianco comune and/or Catarratto bianco lucido and/or Damaschino and/or Inzolia and/or Nero d'Avola . It's colour is an intense yellow and on the palate it is sweet. Its minimum alcohol contents are 17 per cent. It is aged for one year before being bottled. Its contents of sugar are 100 grams/liter. It may be kept for 5 years and longer. It is usually drank at the end of a meal or as an aperitive and should be served at a temperature of 18 degrees Centigrade. For this wine's various varieties refer to the following:
    • Semisecco: the quantity of sugar varies between 40 and 100 grams/liter and the wine should be served at 15 degrees Centigrade.
    • Secco: the quantity of sugar is less than 40 grams/liter.
    • Superiore: the wine is aged for a minimum of 2 years.
    • Riserva: the wine is aged for minimum 4 years.
    • Vergine: the wine is aged for a minimum of 5 years.
    • Ambra: 1% of mosto cotto is added to the wine.
    • Rubino: is produced with Pignatello, Calarese and Nerello mascarese grapes.

Around Ragusa and Siracusa (Southern Section)

  • Cerasuolo di Vittoria: this wine si made from grapes Frappato (40%), Calabrese (50%), Grosso nero and Nerello mascalese (up to 10%) . The wine is cherry red and on the palate it is dry and full bodied. It minimum alcohol contents are 13 per cent. It can be kept for many years, by storing the bottle in a horizontal position, but it is at its best during the first 5 or 6 years. The wine should be served at a temperature of 18 degrees.
  • Moscato di Noto Naturale: it is produced from Moscato bianco grapes. Its colour varies between golden and amber yellow. It is sweet wine with an alcohol content of 11.5 per cent. It should be drunk within its first year and served at a temperature of 8 degrees Centigrade. Its varieties are Moscato di Noto Spumante (spumante that can be kept for 2 years and served at 5 degrees Centigrade), Moscato di Noto Liquoroso (its contents in alcohol are 22 per cent and can be kept for 4 or 5 years).
  • Moscato di Siracusa: it is produced from Moscato bianco grapes. It is sweet and has an alcohol content of 16.5 per cent. It is at its best during its first 2 or 3 years and should be served at a temperature of 8 degrees.

Around the Etna

  • Etna Bianco: this wine is produced with not less than 60% of Carricante grapes, up to 40% of Catarratto bianco comune lucido and up to 15% of Trebbiano toscano and/or Minnella bianca . Its minimum alcohol contents are 11.5 per cent and should be drunk within its first year. It is most suited for antipasti and fish dishes. The serving temperature is 8 degrees Centigrade. Variety: Etna bianco Superiore: it contains at least 80% of Carricante grapes; it is dry on the palate and its minimum alcohol contents are 12 per cent. It should be drunk within its first 2 years and served at a temperature of 8 degrees.
  • Etna Rosato: for the production of this wine, the Nerello grapes (80% of the wine contents) are vinified in white. Other grapes include Nerello mantellato (20%) and other white grapes (up to 10%). The wine is dry and full bodied on the palate. Its contents in alcohol are 12.5 per cent. It is at its best in its first 2 years and should be served at a temperature of 12 degrees.
  • Etna Rosso: it is produced from the same grapes as the Rosato . Its alcohol contents are 12.5 per cent and can be kept for up to 5 years. It is best suited for meat dishes and medium-old cheese. Its serving temperature is around 18 degrees.

Around Messina

  • Faro: this red wine is produced from Nerello mascalese (45% to 60%), Nerello cappuccio (15% to 30%), Nocera (5% to 10%), Calabrese, Gaglioppo and Sangiovese (up to 15%) grapes. It is aged for 1 year, it is dry on the palate and its minimum contents in alcohol are 12 per cent. It may be kept for up to 5 years and should be served at a temperature of 18 degrees.

In the Eolie

  • Malvasia delle Lipari: this wine is produced from grapes coming from vineyards with Malvasia delle Lipari and Corinto nero grapes. It is a white wine with a sweet taste. Its minimum alcohol contents are 11.5 per cent and is at its best during its first 2 years. It is best suited for aperitives and desserts and should be served at a temperature of 10 degrees Centigrade.
  • Malvasia delle Lipari Passito Dolce Naturale: made from the same grapes as the above but having gone through the appassimento phase and having been aged until the 1st June following the harvest. Its contents in alcohol are 18 per cent and may be kept for up to 4 years.
  • Malvasia delle Lipari Liquoroso: this wine is a stronger version of the Malvasia delle Lipari . Its minimum contents in alcohol are 20 per cent and may be kept for up to 6 years.

From the island of Pantelleria

  • Moscato di Pantelleria Naturale: this wine is produced from Zibibbo grapes. It is a sweet white wine, with an alcoholic content of 12.5 per cent. It should be drunk within its first 2 years and is most suited to accompany desserts. The serving temperature is 10 degrees Centigrade.
  • Moscato di Pantelleria Spumante Naturale: it's the Spumante version of the above wine. It should be served at 6 degrees Centigrade.
  • Moscato di Pantelleria Liquoroso: this wine is a stronger variety of the above Moscato. It may be kept for up to 6 years and should be served at a temperature of 15 degrees.
  • Moscato di Pantelleria Naturalmente Dolce: due to the adding of appassito grapes its contents in alcohol are 17.5 per cent. It can be kept for up to 6 years.
  • Moscato di Pantelleria Passito: the grapes that go into the production of this wine have gone through the appassimento phase. It is a sweet red wine with an alcohol content of 14 per cent. It may be kept for up to 4 years and is best suited for desserts. Its serving temperature should be 15 degrees.
  • Moscato di Pantelleria Passito Liquoroso: it is a stronger variety of the above mentioned one (21.5 per cent). It is suited for desserts and should be served at 15 degrees Centigrade.
  • Moscato di Pantelleria Passito and Moscato di Pantelleria Passito Liquoroso Extra: these 2 wines are called 'extra' when considered finer and when they are stronger on the palate. Their minimum contents in alcohol are 29.5 per cent. They are aged for a whole year after the harvest and are sold in bottles that are only manufactured on the island of Pantelleria.
