Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is this club?
A: Carolina Retro Riders is a branch of a national organization called Old People’s Riding Club. We are open to adults, and both English and Western riders are welcome. The membership forms, releases, standards, etc., can be found at www.oldpeoplesridingclub.org.
Q: What are “standards”?
A: Standards are written documents that detail a set of skills needed to demonstrate proficiency at various stages. The easiest level, D1, is mandatory and must be passed before the member can participate in mounted activities with Carolina Retro Riders. There are mounted and unmounted portions of each standard, along with jumping and non-jumping options for English riders, and there are separate standards for Western riders. Rating tests are available periodically, and all ratings beyond D1 are optional.
Q: How often are meetings, and what type of activities do you offer?
A: Meetings are roughly once a month, and may be mounted or unmounted. Mounted activities have included dressage lessons, trail rides, jumping lessons, natural horsemanship clinics, etc. Unmounted meetings have been a trip to the Southern Horse Festival in Raleigh. Members take turns organizing an activity of their choice.
Q: Where do you meet?
A: Meeting locations vary, but in general, we cover central North Carolina. Our members live anywhere from Statesville to Hillsborough, and meetings may be anywhere we decide to go. Trail rides could be in the mountains, for example, regardless of where members live.
Q: Do the dues cover the mounted lessons?
A: No, but instructors have been great so far about offering us group discounts. The exact cost for each activity will vary.
Q: What are the costs involved?
A: Fees are as follows: (dues include the fee we pay to OPRC for each member)
Annual Dues (1/1-12/31): Individual member: $40.00
Individual & spouse: $60.00
Rating test: $15.00
Q: How do I get more information about joining?
