Most smokin' releases of 2002
SEND IN YOUR TOP 5 (or more!) AND I'LL ADD IT HERE
Dr.Rhythm -
Well, here's the Dr's top 5
picks for 2002...damn tricky to pick just 5, but
here goes...
1. Clutch - Live At The Googolplex
yeah, yeah...I know it's not out yet, but I _know_ this one's gonna rip and
it'll be spending LOTS of time in my player! The fellas from C! never
disappoint, especially live.
2. YOB - Elaborations Of Carbon
Holy shit! I almost jizzed when I heard this! Picks right up where Sleep's
Holy Mountain left off...may I say holy shit one more time? I _finally_ got a
better copy of this (thx reklaw!) and it's exactly what I've been looking for! I
wish the production was just a little better, but it's not too bad...the mega
riffs more than make up for it!
3. Down - Down II:A Bustle up your
ass or whatever
Finally something good from all these great musicians! Kirk from Crowbar,
Pepper from COC, Jimmy from every band on the face of the earth...and Phil from
Pantera, although I'm not sure how much he contributed. I think it had a lot to
do with how they recorded the album...just got this place out in the middle of
the swampland and just hung out for a month or so and jammed...and here's what
came out! I still think Pepper should be singin' tho...
4. Weedeater - Sixteen Tons
This release absolutely smokes anything they've ever done in the past! Tuned
down to a whale fart and just sludgin' hard...
5. QOTSA - Songs For The Deaf
Well, this is a no-brainer, although it really takes a couple of listens to get
past the radio banter and whatnot...there are some kick-ass tunes on this disc,
and some that are just good. And the ladies dig it too, so you can actually get
away with taking that damn Madonna cd out of the changer (thank gawd!)
UrbanCoyote
I couldnt pick 5 albums from 2002 so I threw in one from 2001...in no particular
order...
Pod People - Doom
Saloon
Crushingly heavy from start to finish. None more brutal in 2002 in the world of
doom.
Stiff Meat -
Introducing Stiff Meat
Awesome live band - riffs that wont stop. This is just an ep release, the first
official release by these guys, and whilst production could be a little clearer
this is still pure riff gold. Wait til you get a load of some of the new songs
these dudes have put together.
BoltThrower -
Honour Valour Pride
The ever reliable sound of Boltthrower. One of the few bands you just buy the cd
of when it comes out without needing a listen to it before parting with the
cash. Another dose of gravity inducing bowel mangling downtuned riffery.
Grand Magus - Grand
Magus
I know this came out very late in 2001, but it was definitely one of the albums
I cranked the most this year - 70 doomblues at its best.
Cockfight Shootout
- Something you dont need
OK OK - SO i cheated and changed one of my picks but yeah, this is only an ep
but it is solid, cranked from start to finish, real cool vocals and crafty
riffs, in the vein of roadsaw but a bit less predictable i reckon..

1. Queens
Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf:
I'd been waiting for this album forever. And the release date kept getting
pushed farther and farther back. But in the end QOTSA release one of their best
albums to date and a free DVD to boot! Many great tunes on this disc!
2. Fu Manchu -
California Crossing:
By far not as heavy as their other albums but with catchier song writing and
vocal hooks. It's a shame you had to go to Best Buy to get the extra disc with
the 2 bonus tracks instead of your local indy retailer...
3. Astroqueen -
Into Submission: 2
bands on my list with the word "queen" in the title. But what can I say other
than these guys just plain rock? I love fuzzy riffs that just grab you and don't
let go. This is the kinda stuff Nebula should be doing, dammit!
4. Dragon Green -
Emmisions From Green Sessions:
To be honest, I wasn't expecting much when I got this album... Boy, was I
surprised. An instrumental band that says so much without saying anything at
all!
5. 35007 - Liquid:
This is the kinda record that takes you to so many places all in the same track.
It's progressive and relaxing yet emotionally compelling...
Honorable mentions
for this year would have to go to Cathedral's "Seventh Coming" [certainly one of
the better albums they've released in a long time], the Sucking The 70's
compilation [which has many shining moments but also a lot of crap -- Roadsaw
just plain rawks!], and Cockfight Shootout's "Something You Don't Need" [I can't
wait to hear what their next offering sounds like!].

Dying Passion - Voyage & Moonlight - Yaishi:
sweet tears from czek
republic
Opeth - Deliverance:
any comments are useless..
Pawnshop - Cruise O'Matic:
desert sound in polar
night
hard to pick out
only 5 works..... too many albums out in 2002 are worthy to be
mentioned here in my opinion =)
chrononaut (i
stole yours from the stonerrock.com page chrono, hope you dont mind!!)
here are
some of my favorites off the top of my head...
1. Thumlock - Sojourns Lucid Magic:
I fucking played this all
summer and it still gets played quite often. I love all of the songs, and even
Mamacita digs that techno-sounding shit at the end of the last track ("UFO
Christ"?).
2. sHEAVY - Synchronized:
A late comer, as it was just released a month or two ago, but goddamn, I could
listen to this every day (and I almost have). It's almost surpassed The Electric
Sleep.
3. 35007 - Liquid:
Still only have it on MP3, but man I listened to my burned copy a hell of a lot.
Definitely deserves a purchase at some point. Trippy, groovy shit.
Here's where it
gets difficult. 2002 was a great year for the rock, so it's hard to put the rest
in any kind of order, but I'll try.
4. Down - Down II:
Awesome. That's really the only way to describe this album. I liked NOLA a lot,
but they really came together on this one. Phil shows he can do more than scream
and yell like he does in Pantera, and the songs are just great Southern Fried
Sabbath heavy rock.
5. High On Fire - Surrounded By Thieves:
Crushing, pummeling, cool
lyrics. Not quite as immortal as The Art Of Self Defense, but still very, very
good. And you have to love the authentic Bigfoot call sampled at the beginning
of "The Yeti".
6. Bongzilla - Gateway:
I wasn't a really big Bongzilla fan until this year, and here's the reason. So
fucking good and heavy and trippy and smoky, they make me forget about the
'gargling with razor blades' vocals, although even those are growing on me.
7. Abdullah - Graveyard Poetry:
Like HOF, Graveyard Poetry
wasn't as powerful as Abdullah's self titled, but still kicked ass. Great songs,
and Jeff's vocals are superb as always.
8. Electric Wizard - Let Us Prey:
It's still growing on me, but I still think it's their weakest release. Which
shows you what a great band they are; their weakest album makes #7 for the year.
My main complaint is the muffled vocals, which (for me) makes it hard to tell
the songs apart. Nonetheless, they have the usual heavy, smoky, Electric Wizard
atmosphere, and they will destroy you.
9. Orange Goblin - Coup De Grace:
Once more, not their best
album to date, but it's still pretty damn good. "Stinkin' O' Gin" and "Getting
High On The Bad Times" are two of their best songs ever, IMO, and they're almost
worth the price of the CD alone. Better luck next time, though, hopefully.
10. Black Label Society - 1919 Eternal:
I listened to this one all
the time when it came out, and it still gets an occasional spin. All the songs
make you want to bang your head, and the lyrics are very powerful. My favorite
is "Berserkers", which I'm sure many people here could identify with.
Others:
Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf, Smoke - Smoke Follows Beauty,
Orquesta Del Desierto - s/t, Brant Bjork & The Operators - s/t, Liquid Sound
Company - Inside The Acid Temple, and of course Sucking The '70s.
So many good
releases... it's almost certain 2003 will be a let down, like 2001 was for me
after the great year in 2000. Let's hope not.
