Mr Grimble was written one day when I was doing security work for an event in the daytime. It was one of those really boring days but luckily I was stood (well most the time sat to be honest!) by a large window at Wolverhampton Civic Hall. It was about 3 hours into the day & I was just dazing out of the window when I saw a fella, about 30 years of age walking past the hall with a little kid about 4 or 5. He looked really stressed & tired but when he looked down at this kid, he just smiled, picked him up & carried on.
I thought I'd write a song so I ran off & got a pen & paper & started to write. It was the first "story" kind of song that I'd ever written but it started off nice & interesting.
By the time I'd finished it, it turned into the song you can read below.
To explain why I wrote the song the way I did, I have to say that I personally think single fathers have a shit deal. They don't get the respect they deserve, get trodden on by the wanky "justice" system we have here in Britain & get nothing but contempt from the mothers (or rather the solictors acting on their behalf) that seem to think that their child can do well without a father. But it's not just a British problem. It's the same in the USA, Australia & the rest of the "civilised" world.
Mr Grimble is about what happens when you cut the father out of a childs life & how it affects them. The ending though could go one of two ways. There could be three coffins or just the one. It's up to you how you interpret it.
Mr Grimble
Mr Grimble's shopping on a sunny Saturday
Back home for eleven so the kids can come & play
Fixes lemonade for Jo with two flourescent straws
But Chris will have to share it because Mr Grimbles poor
Another evenings tears as Mr Grimble settles down
Retires into his bedroom with his cocoa and his frown
He looks inside his wardrobe for his twelve bored sawn off friend
Cause Mr Grimble knows his happiness is at an end(Hey!)
Things should have happened differently
Any fool could see
It wasn't how he wanted it to be
I guess he'll never see
Six people at his funeral but not one tear in sight
Just Mrs Grimble crying "Why'd I leave them there that night?
You thought you had to end it, oh well that was up to you
But why'd you have to take my children too?"(Hey!)
Things should have happened differently
Any fool could see
It wasn't how he wanted it to be
I guess he'll never see
