Mr. Clemente said, "Put your heads down on your desks and listen to the rain." I didn't know then that I wanted to be a writer, but I knew this was magic and I wanted more and more of it. English majors in college show up in my writing workshops years later, after trying a career in another field, because a dream was born in them back in school when they read Dostoyevski, Thomas Mann, and Virginia Woolf, and they can't get it out of their heads. So after a few years as computer programmers, they see it doesn't give them that hard rain in the afternoon outside the window. They know there is something else and that it's in their own brain. I honor English majors. It's a dumb thing to major in. It leads nowhere. It's good to be dumb, it allows us to love for no reason. That's the best kind of love.

~ Natalie Goldberg," Wild Mind," p.140.

When you opened the door a bell tinkled, but just once, high and clear and small in the neat obscurity above the door, as though it were gauged and tempered to make that single clear small sound so as not to wear the bell out nor to require the expenditure of too much silence in restoring it when the door opened upon the recent warm scent of baking; a little dirty child with eyes like a toy bear's and two patent-leather pig-tails.

"Hello, sister." Her face was like a cup of milk dashed with coffee in the sweet warm emptiness. "Anybody here?" [...]

The little girl watched them with still and unwinking eyes like two currants floating motionless in a cup of weak coffee

~ William Faulkner, "The Sound and The Fury"

Trichotillomania is a shame-based disorder which means that it paralyzes and disrupts the core of identity. Shame is an acutely disturbing affect likened to a wound made from the inside, disturbing the natural development and functioning of the self. Shame is the source of low self-esteem, poor self-concept, body image, insecurity, and low self-confidence. The inner experience of shame is a sickness withinin the self and cuts at the very essence of the soul and spirit. It is felt as an inner torment whose pain is so strong that it can fragment the self from itself and from others ( Kaufman, 1989; Soriano and O'Sullivan, 1996). http://www.trichotillomania.ab.ca/rwpeta/resources1.htm

John Kender runs the mailer and is very intelligent about TTM and is always searching for ways to overcome the impulse-control disorder that plagues many people in the world, one of them being myself.
