The men in both of these stories were the same person told through the eyes of a different author with different names. They both loved they’re wives with unconditionally. The only difference between the two is that the man of “A Secret Sorrow” was too dramatic. Both men gave their lover exactly what they thought their lover needed. For example in “A Secret Sorrow”, Kai went to Faye’s house and made sure that she knew that he loved her. (p.32) In “A Sorrowful Woman” the man had hired a helping hand around the house so his wife could get better (p.36), though I think he should have hired a therapist. The children in both stories are important characters in both stories not for they’re role as a character but as the role of being the child. The children in both stories at least threaten to destroy the relationship each couple had. In “A Secret Sorrow”, it was the lack of children that threatened to destroy the relationship that Kai and Faye had because Kai was so intent on having children and that Faye wanted him to be happy. In “A Sorrowful Women” the child help decompose the relationship because the mother was afraid of the child. “The boy pretended he was a vicious tiger…one of his sharp claws ripped her flesh…a thin red line materialized on the inside of her pail arm…’go away’ she said. She got herself upstairs and locked the door….After supper several nights later, she hit the child.”
