History of Motorsport 1900-1980

Various

In this area it is a good place to note many of the smaller motorsport events usually seen in the far side of minority. These are worth listing however, if only because they provide such a completely alien challenge to competitors in comparison to "mainstream" racing. Many of these low-profile events run on tighter budgets, are more accessible to the general public and thus it is likely that spectators will see the kind of cars pootling around which could be seen as no different to what Dad drives to the Sunday market save for a few select modifications to headlights and stripped-out seat mountings. Oddly enough this was the case for "mainstream" motorsport in the 50s, which just goes to show how technology from purpose-built racing machines tends to filter down to everyday transport. Indeed many "world" brands devoted to all kinds of motorsport understand this philosophy.

Ford for example is a market leader, and has shown involvement in NASCAR in it's home country. The Focus sees success in the WRC series, the Mondeo went out with a bang with it's dominance in Touring Car racing and there even marks a presence in F1, albeit under the Jaguar brand which the Blue Oval owns. Another division, Aston Martin, is said to be consideriong entry into the legendary Le Mans 24 Hour race, so there's no stopping yet in any signal or form. Improving the breed? Could just be.

Sprints and hill climbs
Each competitor is involved in driving any modern, contemporary or classic car they wish against often very different machinery, climbing a mountain via a short, twisty course to the top. After it's Group B competition was numbered, Peugeot produced the 406 T16 for these rallies and campaigned one on the famous Pike's Peak Hill Climb in the USA. A video of this event featuring Ari Vatanen remains famous.

Road Runs
Not neccessarily a competition, in fact rarely one at all. It's based around the interests of classic car owners and anybody with a car at least 20 years old is welcome. A road licence is needed. Clubs often use these races to give their major events reason to run. Road runs are usually seen annually.

Endurance Rallies
As they sound, these are minority events in the rally world but are always welcomed. Of course Paris-Dakar is world-famous but many smaller events including the three-day Monte Carlo Challenge and London-Mexico attract all kinds of personalities in entrants and create a very inviting stmosphere. They are gruelling in most shape or form, and usually involve commitment when it comes to car preparation.

Historic Single-Seater racing
Self-explanatory in it's own words, these events usually require strong funding. F1 material is some of the latest to grace the circuit but also known are Maseratis and Bentley Blowers.
