What all Mobians fear has happened: Robotnik has all of the Chaos Emeralds!  However, one of his robot assisstants goofed while working on ol' Robo's latest weapon, and a huge explosion sends scatters all the Emeralds over the planet.  Robotnik, still holding one emerald, sets out to find the others.  Sonic and Tails learn of Robotnik's plans and set out to find the Emeralds as well.  Knuckles leaves the Floating Island to find them himself.   Then Nack the Weasel, newcomer and bounty/treasure hunter, learns about the value the Emeralds would be, and sets out to find them, still unaware of their great power.

This is the first Game Gear game with Knuckles and Nack.  You are given the option to play as Sonic or Tails.   Each one has their own special abilities; Sonic can do his awesome Super Peel Out move, and Tails can fly.  Sonic can also snowboard down snowy hills, and Tails can control his sub, the Sea Fox, underwater.

There are six zones for you to play in.  The number of acts are unknown.
