An Endorsement of cycling by the Minister for Tourism:
"Cycling is healthy and enjoyable and is often the best way to see our beautiful countryside.
As a keen cyclist, I share the enjoyment that getting on your bike and heading into the hills brings. And as Minister for Tourism I know the important contribution cycling makes to our tourism economy.
"Any initiative that encourages people to get on their bikes and get the most of their trips is very welcome."
Kim Howells - Minister for Tourism
Hiring a bike
Hiring a bike is a great way to try out cycling or to cycle whilst you’re on
holiday but before you do so please follow these ten simple guidelines which
form the UK wide Cycle Hire Code. It should appear in all hire outlets if it
does not ask them why and follow these guideline when you question them. Shops
and centres in Scotland are already using the code, which is displayed in
certificate form in many outlets.
1. Are the bikes safe and legal to use?
2. Are all cycles and accessories are checked between each use, cleaned if
necessary and kept in good working order?
3. Do you keep proper records of cycle use and maintenance?
4. Is a lock, bell, safe means of carrying luggage and repair kit available?
5. Is mobile assistance provided upon request?
6.Are helmets are available?
7. Are they safe and clean?
8. Are the bikes suitable for their purpose and the descriptions of them
accurate?
9. Do you provide the correct size of cycle and will you adjust it to fit?
10.Do you provide instruction and advice about how to use the cycle
where to ride and cycling safety.
A more detailed description of these requirements should be available from the management of the outlet.
The Cycle Hire Code is administered by CTC - the UK's national cycling organisation -and was produced in consultation with the Scottish Tourist Board and the Association of Cycle Traders.
The above mentioned organisations accept no liability for disputes howsoever arising between any such business and its customers.
Choosing your bike
Maybe you already have a bike, but now you know a bit more about cycling you may
have decided that you need something different. CTC can help you choose a new
bike or modify the one you have. You might not find them all at a nearby dealer
(listed in this guide), but it’s best to shop local if you can, since all new
bikes need after-sales service to keep them running well. So click here to
