Why experience matters
Topic: Economics

Preachin to the choir here.  One of the knocks against our current POTUS was that he'd never had to meet payroll.  Never run a business.  Had no idea what it was like.  And so it is that I provide two case studies from two other prominent Donks.

DAVID BONIOR LEAVES OFFICE, GOES INTO BUSINESS, LEARNS WHY REPUBLICANS ARE UNHAPPY WITH GOVERNMENT:

Over tasty Caesar salad and tacos at Agua 301, the mild-mannered, thoughtful Bonior — chastened by local regulators and fickle weather — sounds more born-again capitalist than fire-breathing lefty.

“Small-business people work very hard,” said the 68-year-old, who has spent most of his life in government. “If you are a small-business guy, you are out there and not as protected as a government employee. They struggle every day. A snow day, a government worker is off. A restaurant person takes a hit from that snow day. This winter was very, very tough on the [restaurant] industry.” . . .

“There are always going to be problems, and we’ve had our share.”

Bonior said if he had the power, he would lighten up on pesky regulations.

“It took us a ridiculous amount of time to get our permits. I understand regulations and .?.?. the necessity for it. But we lost six months of business because of that. It’s very frustrating.”

Do tell. George McGovern had a similar experience.

Benghazi roundup

is this the end of Rico?

New Benghazi Emails Show Blaming Video Was Effort to Protect, Re-Elect Obama. Nobody who’s paid attention could doubt this, of course, but the evidence is now clear.

UPDATE: “If this isn’t a smoking gun on Benghazi, at least on the controversy over the talking points that blamed a YouTube video rather than the terrorists who plotted and then conducted the attack, then it’s not clear what would qualify.”

For me, the worst part was sending a filmmaker to jail for no reason other than self-protection at election time.

Justice in Obama’s America — it’s what’s convenient for the narrative at the moment.

USA TODAY: Senator: E-mails show how Benghazi story shaped.

oh ... and by the way ... That’s Ben Rhodes, whose brother is President of CBS.

Topic: Running

naged all week. Tried to race today.  Took second in the 200m.  Was first out of the blocks, held on for 50-75 meters then the pain kicked in.  30.45.  Not bad.  Grades out at a 77.  Still about 3 months ahead of last season.

100m - starter held us for 5 secs - WAY too long.  By the time I took my 5th step my leg was screaming.  DNF.  And scratched the 400m.

Still 15 years since I've run a meet healthy.

LIFE IN OBAMA’S AMERICA: State Department: Prosecuting journalists is not harassment.

“SMART DIPLOMACY” UPDATE: John F. Kerry’s Israeli gaffe a diplomatic nightmare. I think they gave him this job so Hillary’s tenure would look good by comparison, but for the first time in his life he’s over-performing.

NEW YORK TIMES: Pop Culture Puts Spin on Grim Realities of Obama Presidency. “President Obama, the optimistic candidate of hope and change. Five and a half years into his presidency, Mr. Obama has had a powerful impact on the nation’s popular culture. But what many screenwriters, novelists and visual artists have seized on is not an inspirational story of the first black president. Instead they have found more compelling story lines in the darker, morally fraught parts of Mr. Obama’s legacy.”

You know, basically everything except the first black president part. Interesting to see this in the NYT, though. Plus: “The difference for Mr. Obama may be the gap between what his supporters expected and what they now see.” Ya think?

Hobbits, Hooligans, and Vulcans
Topic: Politics

In Against Politics, Jason Brennan outlines three broad types of democratic citizens, whom he calls Hobbits, Hooligans, and Vulcans:

Hobbits are mostly apathetic and ignorant about politics. They lack strong fixed opinions about most political matters. Often they have no opinions at all. They have little if any social scientific knowledge—they are ignorant not just of current events, but of the social scientific theories and data needed to evaluate and understand these events. They have only a cursory knowledge of relevant world or national history. They prefer to go on with their daily lives without giving politics much thought. In America, the typical non-voter is Hobbit.

Hooligans are the rabid sports fans of politics. They have strong and largely fixed world-views. They can present arguments for their views, but they cannot explain alternative points of view in a way that people with those other points of view would find satisfactory. They consume political information, but in a biased way. They tend to seek out information that confirms their pre-existing political opinions, but ignore, evade, and reject out of hand evidence that contradicts or disconfirms their pre-existing opinions. They may have some or even significant exposure to the socials sciences, but they cherry-pick data and tend only to learn about research that supports their own views. They are overconfident in themselves and what they know. Their political opinions form part of their identity, and they are proud to be a member of their political team. For them, being a Democrat or a Republican matters to their self-image in the same way being a Christian or a Muslim matters to religious people’s self-image. They tend to despise people who disagree with them, holding that people with alternative points of view are stupid, evil, selfish, or, at best, deeply misguided. …most activists, registered party members, and politicians are Hooligans.

Vulcans think scientifically and rationally about politics. Their opinions are strongly grounded in social science and philosophy. They are self-aware, and only as confident as the evidence allows. They can explain contrary points of view in a way that people holding those points of view would find satisfactory. They are interested in politics, but at the same time, dispassionate, in part because they actively try to avoid being biased and irrational. They do not think everyone who disagrees with them is stupid, evil, or selfish, though they might correctly identify Hooligans as Hooligans and Hobbits as Hobbits.

A truly great POTUS Speach
Topic: History

The new issue of National Affairs (whose founding editor is my Ethics and Public Policy Center colleague, and Corner contributor, Yuval Levin) features a wonderfully insightful essay by Diana Schaub on the Gettysburg Address. Here’s a sample passage:

The first paragraph of the Gettysburg Address consists of only one sentence, but it’s a doozy. It describes the past, the nation’s beginnings. What Lincoln called “the birthday of the United States of America” in the serenade speech has been transformed into a sophisticated, poetic metaphor that refers to three distinct moments: conception, birth, and baptism. The past that Lincoln refers to is a past that stretches back before living memory. “Four score and seven years ago” exceeds the individual’s allotment of “three score and ten,” the Biblical phrase for the natural span of a human life. Lincoln’s decision to formulate the date in this way accentuates the fact that the founding is now beyond anyone’s direct experience.

Since racism seems to have reared its ugly head again

Democratic Governor Compares Black Republicans To Jewish Nazis.

Illinois Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn is in some hot water with the Jewish community after his campaign tweeted—and then quietly deleted—several messages urging backers to read an article comparing black Republican voters to Jews who collaborated with the Nazis.

Chicago Sun Times readers were stunned last week to find that writer Neil Steinberg has penned a column comparing black supporters of Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner to Jews who collaborated with the Nazis against their brethren. . . .

Quinn’s camp praised the piece and tweeted it out to supporters several times. The tweets were deleted after local Jewish community officials quietly communicated their outrage to the governor.

If he’d been a Republican, the outrage probably would have been noisier.

and I love it when I'm compared to a pig first thing in the morning:

Exeter University Prof: ‘Debating skeptics is like mud wrestling with pigs’

but back to left wing racism: IS THIS BECAUSE THEY’RE SUCCESSFUL? BECAUSE THAT SOUNDS KIND OF RACIST: Latino assemblyman: Asians not ‘people of color.’
