President Downgrade
Topic: Politics

Finally getting around to reviewing the POTUS SOTU speech.  A few observations:

1.  If you want a good distillation of this president’s wrongheaded view of the United States of America, look no further than this rhetorical bit from the end of the speech.  “No one built this country on their own. This Nation is great because we built it together. This Nation is great because we worked as a team. This Nation is great because we get each other’s backs.”

Unity is central to American identity, but not the way Obama envisions it. E pluribus unum is not Latin for, “Hey, bro, let’s invest in some infrastructure together.” The notion that this nation is one big team that acts collectively toward shared goals set by the state would be completely foreign to the men who founded it. But that is Obama’s concept of America.

2.  Groundhog Day?  He talked about jobs and energy dependance.  Didn't he just nix the Keystone XL pipeline last week?  Of have I awakened in early January again?

3.  If you're going to quote a fellow POTUS, get it right.  Some of us actually pay attention to that kind of stuff.

Toward the end of his State of the Union address, President Obama delivered a paragraph that was so blatantly absurd and self contradictory as to actually become clarifying—so incoherent that it shed a bright light on his thinking and his grave dilemma. It’s hard to believe he actually said this, but he did:

I’m a Democrat.  But I believe what Republican Abraham Lincoln believed:  That Government should do for people only what they cannot do better by themselves, and no more.  That’s why my education reform offers more competition, and more control for schools and States.  That’s why we’re getting rid of regulations that don’t work.  That’s why our health care law relies on a reformed private market, not a Government program.

The speech in question was  “The Nature and Objects of Government, with Special Reference to Slavery” (July 1, 1854.)  What Lincoln DID say was:

“The legitimate object of government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but cannot do at all, or cannot so well do, for themselves in their separate and individual capacities.”

Notice the difference? The emphasis is on the need to have done, not on government doing the action. “That distinction was missing from his quotation,” Jaffa explains. Yet Obama has repeatedly invoked this misleading Lincoln quotation on both the campaign trail and during his presidency.

It is for the public to ask about those infrastructure projects: do we need green jobs that cost too much and reward political cronies?

Or a $787 billion stimulus in which only 5% goes to infrastructure projects, according to the Boston Globe?

In trying to make himself sound moderate, it is obvious that Obama doesn’t even believe his own version of Lincoln’s quotation. If he did, why is he creating health insurance exchanges in every state that will make it harder for individuals to buy insurance, and affect the in-state insurance rates? Why is he regulating our light bulbs? Our mortgages? Our banks?

Charles Murray
Topic: Politics

This is an extremely excerpted post, albiet an important one.

Charles Murray has a new book: Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2101.He's written a GREAT essay previewing it.  Go read it.

Two national paradigms are emerging in place of one, he argues:

America has never been a classless society. From the beginning, rich and poor have usually lived in different parts of town, gone to different churches, and had somewhat different manners and mores. It is not the existence of classes that is new, but the emergence of classes that diverge on core behaviors and values—classes that barely recognize their underlying American kinship.

As recently as half a century ago, Americans across all classes showed only minor differences on the Founding virtues. When Americans resisted the idea of being thought part of an upper class or lower class, they were responding to a reality: there really was such a thing as a civic culture that embraced all of them. Today, that is no longer true. Americans have formed a new lower class and a new upper class that have no precedent in our history. American exceptionalism is deteriorating in tandem with this development.

To promote the book AEI has put together an interesting and amusing quiz that asks, “How thick is your bubble?”  After three of you have posted your results I'll post mine.

The problem?  It’s not just ignorance. It’s oikophobia. Coupled, quite frequently, with eleutherophobia.

Travelogue Part: The Fourth

By now you know the players.  Here's what got me home from the other side of Pittsburgh.

Back to the Federal Society 2011 National Lawyers Convention.  Keep in mind I took a class in Intillectual  Property 30 years ago.  This was tough even for ME to follow: IP and Parallel Importation -- Should the U.S., Through IP Laws and Other Means, Protect Businesses from "Gray Goods" Imported Without Manufacturers’ Authorization?  NOT a good way to finish the trip.

Ricochet 101.  Here's the description from the web site: Ann Coulter joins for a rousing debate on Mitt Romney. That is all. Wow.  a GREAT fast paced discussion.  THAT woke me up.

back to the FS for a debacle: Organized Labor and the Obama Administration.  OK, for starters, that's redundant.  It opened with Hon. Eugene Scalia, Partner, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP and former Solicitor, U.S. Department of Labor.  A long boring recitation ofnumbers.  He was followed by Hon. John N. Raudabaugh, Counsel, Nixon Peabody LLP and former Member, National Labor Relations Board who practically broke down into tears owing to the politicization (?) of the NLRB (No Longer Relevant, Basically).  When Mr. William Samuel, Director of Government Affairs, American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations began trotting out the tired, discredited Marxist tropes I had to turn it off.  The FS does a GREAT job of bringing in opposing viewpoints and usually I appreciate thier presentation and, occasionally, evisceration ... but this guy was a cartoon.  Didn't even stick around for the Q&A.  Instead flipped over to one of my smart playlists: Driving.

A few old classics (from the Monkees, Rod Stewart and the Faces and Build Me Up Buttercup from the Foundations).  A couple of selections from NFL films.  And my standard driving tunes headlined by the theme from Route 66.

Home before midnight.  A good, eclectic, profitable, enjoyable, entertaining and educationale day.

Travelogue Part: The Third
Topic: Travel

I save some of my 1 hour plus pods for these long drives.  I pick 2-3 that add up to 3 1/2 to 4 hours and bundle them together.   When they've run I flip over to my driving music playlist until I get to a good roadside rest to refuel or recoffee or both.  Makes for a nice enforced rest interval.

I've a backlog of event recording from past meetings of The Federal Society.   Most of these clock in at close to 1:30 and many are kind of "Inside Baseball."  First up: Deficit Reduction and the Role of the Federal Government in Regulating Business.  Mainly Richard Epstein vs Heather Slavkin.  NOT a fair fight.

Law School Accreditation.  Considering my current occupation this one was GREAT.  Some good points made.  There's a movement to move Law School to a two year program with a year of clinical/externship/apprenticeship.

In between those two hefty meals I enjoyed episode 100 from Ricochet. I've been listening since #1 and you should go back, get them all, and catch up.  They release one every week or so.  Sadly I'm a month behind so this episode dealt larely with the New Hampshire primary but included a 15 minute discussion of "Young Frankenstein".  Planted some interesting seeds that will hopefully bear fruit next October when I post my YF review.  Overview: James Lileks, Rob Long, Peter Robinson, and guests discussing the issues of the week.  Lileks is one of my favorite observers ofcontemporary culture.  Rob Long is best known for "Cheers".  And Peter Robinson (the resident squish) was a speechwriter for President Reagan.  If you clck and enjoy more than half of the stuff I link to around here, Ricochet needs to become part of your daily reading.

A few random driving tunes, a Burger King and Sunoco stop, and we're on the road for the final leg.

Travelogue Part: The Second
Topic: Travel

My Ipod has become my constant companio and that never more true than on an extended trip such as yesterday's.  So what DO I listen to?  Here's a leg by leg report.  Perhaps you might stumbe on something you'll like.

From my house to JFK:

Started my day like I start a LOT of my days - with the previous evening installment of ESPN's PTI.  LOVE those guys.

Then on to a little light, short politics.  National Review proviedes 3-5 updates per day, usually 5-10 minutes long.  Nice little bites for between classes  or to wrap up a trip.  TED talks provided a short diversion - a talk from an accident victim who used "group recovery."  We then launched intothe philosophy portion of our trip.  We started with Everyday Philosophy from the BBC - a monthly philosophical tidbit regarding something in the news.  Envy in Politics was todays topic.  Most of the flight was occupie by an installment of Philosophy Talk.  Substitute Phil. proffs from ND, Georgetown and Loyola for Click and Clack, and the search for meaning in life for a 1992 Mercury Marquis and you get the idea.  St. Augustine was the topic.  I haven't read "City of God" in 30 years so it was nice to revisit.  Touche on "just war" theory and provided a fun discussion of Manicheanism.  About an hour each.  Demands one's attention but accessable.

From JFK to Grand Central Station I tuned in the lates from the American Enterprise Institute: Banter.  Usually 30-45 minutes.  Easy to listen to and always timely.

From GCS to my ultimate destination was reserved for old time radio.  Episodes are usually about 30 minutes.  My Favorite Husband (comedy with Lucille Ball), X Minus One (sci fi), The Clock (thriller), Suspense (duh) and an installment of Orson Welles' Commentaries from 146 pertaining to the abolition of the PCA and the atomic bomb testing at Bikini.  Was there ANYTHING he didn't stick his pudgy fingers into?

The trip home deserves its own post.

with a longwinded one to follow later today.

1.  There's a town in the middle of Pa. called "Jersey Shore."  Guess it shouldn't be a surprise from the state that gave us King of Prussia and Nanty Glo.

2.  Scariest bumper sticker EVER!:

Clinton 2008

Obama 2016

3.  Driving on a State Route west of Happy Valley I saw an "official" roadsign that said "Beware of Aggressive Drivers."  Good advice anytime, but is there a band of tailgaiters hidding out in the Nittany Mountains that the media isn't telling us about?

BUY ME A SWEATER!

I do not own ANY jersey that I didn't wear.  I DO have a NOS sweatshirt or two.  But I may finally breakdown and get a sweater.  A hockey sweater.  A Boston Bruins hockey sweater.  With Tim Thomas' number on it.

Obscure statistical analysis
Topic: Football

1.  The NFL moved the kickoff forward this season in order to reduce injuries.

2.  As a result the average starting field position was the 22.1, about 5 yards farther back than where it was over the last three seasons.

3.  Each NLF team averaged 189 possessions during the season.

4.  189 possessions times 5 yards means there were 945 more yards to be gained this season.

Is it any wonder then that we saw Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Matt Stafford, and the Aaron Rodgers/Matt Flynn-combination all throw for over 5,000 yards this season. Then on top of that, Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers, Tony Romo, Matt Ryan, Ben Roethlisberger, and Cam Newton all threw for over 4,000 yards.

I wonder if his forward progress was stopped
Topic: War
DEARBORN HEIGHTS — A figurative beat down turned literal beating has led to the felony arrests of a group of local high school football players.

Police arrested four Star International Academy seniors Wednesday on aggravated assault charges stemming from an altercation in the team’s last game of the season.

The players -- Mohamed Ahmed, Fanar Al-Alsady, Hadee Attia and Ali Bajjey, all age 17 -- are accused of gang-beating Lutheran Westland’s quarterback as time expired in Lutheran’s 47-6 drubbing of Star on Oct. 21.

According to numerous witness statements gathered by police, Lutheran’s quarterback was set to take a knee to run out the clock. Before the snap, referees told both teams to refrain from contact, police said.

After the snap, however, the four arrested Star players burst through the line and allegedly manhandled Lutheran’s quarterback. Police said they ripped off his helmet, threw him to the ground and punched and kicked him repeatedly. The incident came to an end after coaches, players and refs stepped in and broke it up.

Police took a statement from a referee who said he heard a Star player say to hit the referees after being directed to not hit the other team.

According to published reports, Lutheran’s quarterback suffered a concussion from the beating. (Source)

Gint v Pats
Topic: Football

1.  Don't EVER tell me kicker don't matter.

2.  NE/BLT was a uni-nightmare.  Just ugly.  The Niners uni is a classic although they SHOULD lose the black around the helmet logo.  The '64-95 helmet was fine.  Ad I'd like to see them bring THIS back for a throwback some season.

3.  Why was the "fumble" by A Bradshaw not a funble?  Because his forward progress had been stopped.  Really?  And the head to head hit on Pierre Thomas which knocked him backwards and out hadn't stopped HIS forward progress?  Is a little consistancy too much to ask?

4.  Look for my prediction next week some time but for now I'd say New Englad by 5 or so.Tough number.  We'll see what the wise guys do.
