Bullies
Topic: Politics

President Obama says he doesn’t like bullies. The White House has even launched a website to help kids and parents recognize the signs of bullying and advise them on how to get help.

Maybe the White House should take its own advice, as the individual mandate portion of Obamacare is nothing short of bullying American citizens into purchasing something they may or may not want or need.

Take a look at this short video from Momthink.org.

another oddity stumbled upon.

This guy played in 60 parts (TV and movies) from 1922 at the age of 8 through 1986, six years before his death.  MOST of them were as "uncredited."  Parts were getting harder to come by late in his career and provided an odd juxtaposition.

In 1967 he played an uncredited character named Manson in the Disney classic  The Gnome-Mobile.  No work for four years.  Then he plays Dr. Philips in  The Big Doll House,  the first big entry in the women in cages genre and Pam Grier's first named role.

From Walter Brennan and mouse ears to sexploition in one easy step.

Starting mere seconds after the closing of the polls during the 2008 Presidential election many have tried thier hand at writing abot which former president Obama is most like.  The left has been going all FDR and Lincoln.  The right has leaned heavily on Carter (although as Gene Reynolds points out, right about now Jimmy Carter would be a best case scenario) ...

but I think we have our winner

Now THIS was an odd co-inky-dink
Topic: Movies

Last night when I turned in I gave a quick flip through the channels.  AYMK I only get about a dozen digital broadcast signals, including the Retro Network.  They were showing a cheesy sword n sorcery flick with Basil Rathbone.  VERY campy.  I'd've enjoyed it if awake.  Vowed to look it up on IMDB today.

Now here I sit surfing and writing and watching Splendor in the Grass (1961).  And I remembered to look up the late night movie.  It was  The Magic Sword from 1962.  A fact I discovered just as Gary Lockwood showed up to ask Natalie Wood out on a date.

So the coincidence?  Lockwood played Allen 'Toots' Tuttle in "Splendor ..." with director Elia Kazan.  And a year LATER he played Sir George in "The Magic Sword".

And people wonder why we don't want "them" in charge!
Topic: Media

1.  Air America's ratings.  In Arbitron's Spring 2008 ratings book, stations carrying a majority AAR programming and in markets reporting every quarter averaged a 1.3 share. The highest rated Air America affiliates were KPOJ in Portland, Oregon (3.7 share), WXXM in Madison, Wisconsin (3.5), and KABQ in Albuquerque, New Mexico (2.6).   In 2008, The Thom Hartmann Program had 1.5-2 million unique listeners a week and The Lionel Show had 1.5-1.75 million unique listeners a week.

2.  Limbaugh et al: According to Michael Harrison of "Talkers"magazine Limbaugh's weekly audience eclipses all other nationally syndicated personalities, including conservatives Sean Hannity (13.25 million), Michael Savage (8.25 million) and Laura Ingraham (5.5 million), according to the magazine's "rough projections."

3.  Robert Kennedy Jr.  "So much of the media's really dependent on corporate money, so you're not going to see, like Air America failed not because it wasn't popular. In every jurisdiction where it was operating it was beating out right-wing radio. There was a huge appetite for it. The problem was, it couldn't get advertising because the corporations, the oil companies, the biggest advertisers, the pharmaceutical companies, which is now 70 percent of the, of the revenue for, for, news shows on TV, is pharmaceutical companies. And so it's very hard to criticize them on the news. Automobile companies, which is the other big player, and many other, these companies won't, wouldn't advertise, they all boycotted Air America. "

4.  Final realstic analysis:

This wasn't quite the take on Air America's demise as reported by Brian Stelter in the New York Times on Jan. 25 2010 --

The nearly six-year-old network, which suffered from merry-go-round management and repeated financial shortfalls, halted production on Thursday evening, only one hour after staff members were told they were losing their jobs.

... In an interview (Thom Hartmann) said he found Air America to be "spectacularly incompetent" at running a radio network and gaining an audience, and left Air America last year for a lesser-known syndication company. "We've been far more successful since we left," he said.

In interviews last week a half-dozen former Air America employees cited similar complaints, namely that a series of owners and managers lacked the necessary broadcasting business expertise.

... Air America's problem, said Michael Harrison, editor of Talkers Magazine, was not knowing "whether they were a political campaign or a broadcasting company."

"They ended up not being terribly good at either," Mr. Harrison added.

The article curiously lacked any mention of a corporate "boycott" depriving Air America of advertising.

Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi, the daughter of the former Speaker of the House, scolded host Bill Maher for spending the first half of his show "dissing America" :

BILL MAHER, HOST: But right now she is a filmmaker whose seventh documentary “Citizen USA: A 50 State Road” and its companion book debuts July 4th on HBO. Take a look.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MAN: Raise your right hand and repeat after me. “I hereby declare my oath…”

UNIDENTIFIED GROUP: I hereby declare my oath.

UNIDENTIFIED MAN: For long, long time I wait for this day.

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: This is greatest day of my life.

UNIDENTIFIED GROUP: I love America.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MAHER: Please welcome Alexandra Pelosi.

ALEXANDRA PELOSI, FILMMAKER: Thank you.

MAHER: How are you doing? You didn’t think you’d be following the President of the United States, did you?

PELOSI: Well, I came to the show because after you spent the first half dissing America, I came to tell you how the American dream has people in every other country all over the world still wanting to come here to live here.

Absolutely delicious. Brava!

Gimme that ol' time religeon
Topic: misc

This was "promised" last month ...it's a little on the long side, rambling and disjointed.  For all of that I apoligize.  I've started it three times.  It keeps going off in other directions.  I can't quite nail it down.  So I'm gonna jump in and jump around and pump this out.

If EVERYTHING tends to be proof of your theory, then it's not science, it's a religeon.  The left warned us of global cooling back in the 70's.  In the 90's it became global warming (AGW.)  Now it's being renamed "Global climate change."  Tornado?  Our fault.  Hurricane?  Our fault.  Flood.  Draught?

Do we see a theme here?

And it became more evident last month when poor old Harold Camping  got his predcton wrong.  Preycan anyone tell me the differece between Camping's errors and any of these?

I don't get to talk about this month, since my wife's an acolyte in the movement.  Being an apostate, it's sometimes amazing I'm even allowed in the house.

And now they're "coming after us."  It didn't START in Austraia but they're certainly getting good at it.  And of course here at home  we have our own brand.

But even Al Gore can't believe this hooey.  Neither can Wirth. While researching this post I ran across this gobsmacking quote from Wirth in 1993. It was then that I realized that "Environmentalists" are mentally incapable of addressing the issue of global warming on a factual level.

“We’ve got to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing, in terms of economic policy and environmental policy. ” – Timothy Wirth quoted in Science Under Siege by Michael Fumento, 1993

That’s true religion. Wirth’s quote makes Dr. Phil Jones look almost reasonable by comparison.

When asked by Warwick Hughes for this data, Dr. Jones famously replied:

Even if WMO agrees, I will still not pass on the data. We have 25 or so years invested in the work. Why should I make the data available to you, when your aim is to try and find something wrong with it.

More wisdom from Wirth here

And Al Gore?  Taken apart pretty well here. Money quotes?

Al Gore can consume more carbon than whole villages in the developing world.  He can consume more electricity than most African schools, incur more carbon debt with one trip in a private plane than most of the earth’s toiling billions will pile up in a lifetime — and he doesn’t worry.  A father of four, he can lecture the world on the perils of overpopulation.  Surely, skeptics reason, if the peril were as great as he says and he cares about it as much as he claims, Gore’s sense of civic duty would call him to set an example of conspicuous non-consumption.  This general sleeps in a mansion, and lectures the soldiers because they want tents.

What this tells the skeptics is that Vice President Gore doesn’t really believe the gospel he proclaims.  That profits from his environmental advocacy enable his affluent lifestyle only deepens their skepticism of the messenger and therefore of the message.  And when they see that the rest of the environmental movement accepts this flagrant contradiction, they conclude, naturally enough, that the other green leaders aren’t as worried as they claim to be.  Al Gore’s lifestyle is a test case for the credibility of his gospel — and it fails. The tolerance of Al Gore’s lifestyle by the environmental leadership is a further test — and that test, too, the greens fail.

...

There are gospels that can be preached by the comfortable and the well fed.  But radical environmentalism is not one of them.  If you want to be Savonarola, you must don the hair shirt.  If you want a public bonfire of the vanities, you must sleep on an iron cot and throw your own cherished treasures into the flame.

All true. On the other hand, if forced to opt between the two, I prefer Elmer Gantry to Savonarola. Hypocrites are, on the whole, less of a menace than ascetics.

But who's with us?  Who besides you and I are these "Deniers"  I give you two:

The UK Geological Society has made a statement about climate change.

This seems to have received very little attention. It’s not a particluarly strong statement, given that it contains the statement:

“During warmings from glacial to interglacial, temperature and CO2 rose together for several thousand years, although the best estimate from the end of the last glacial is that the temperature probably started to rise a few centuries before the CO2 showed any reaction. Palaeoclimatologists think that initial warming driven by changes in the Earth’s orbit and axial tilt eventually caused CO2 to be released from the warming ocean and thus, via positive feedback, to reinforce the temperature rise already in train”

Full statement here:

http://www.geolsoc.org.uk/gsl/views/policy_statements/page7426.html

and finally liberal Supreme Court Judge Ginsburg in the  (8-0)opinion she wrote in American Electric Power v. Connecticut

reveals she is a global warming sceptic :

The court decision noted that the Environmental Protection Agency itself had “Acknowledg[ed] that not all scientists agreed on the causes and consequences of the rise in global temperatures,” before suggesting readers consult “views opposing” the conventional wisdom. Specifically, the justices’ recommended reading was a superb profile of Princeton’s Freeman Dyson, perhaps America’s most respected scientist, written in the New York Times Magazine, March 29, 2009.

Freeman, an unabashed skeptic, believes that carbon dioxide, rather than being harmful, is both necessary and desirable, arguing that “increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth.”

Somewhat in the same vein, Justice Ginsburg notes carbon dioxide is necessary and ubiquitous, and thus shouldn’t be the target of indiscriminate attacks. “After all, we each emit carbon dioxide merely by breathing,” she notes, repeating a point that Dyson couldn’t have said better himself.

Blew by it weeks ago and made no post.  So instead I'll pick an old favorite I rewatched last night.  It had been given to me as a gift on a Father's Day long ago.  It gave a boost to the career of Michael Caine

It featured some fine Welsh singing. *

It's just a great guy flick on so many levels.

Zulu.

TOTALLY watchable.  And imho re-watchable.  Ranks #80 on my all time list right between The Cincinnati Kid and Toy Story 3.

*Men of Harlich is the Alma Mater of Mount Union.  Also, NFL films used it as a "theme" in one of it's scores.

Senator Hillary Clinton, May 2003:

I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you’re not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration.

Sec. of State Hillary Clinton, June 2011:

. . . the bottom line is, whose side are you on? Are you on Qadhafi’s side or are you on the side of the aspirations of the Libyan people and the international coalition that has been created to support them?

And the media remains deaf to the hypocrisy
