Aphyosemion bitaeniatum Lagos
Young adult BIT pair acquired on Apr 1st 2003.
In bright bare tanks, their colors are pale and bleached.
After a stressful ride home & unaccustomed to their
new surroundings,they look real haggard.

Once they're settled down and eating, their colors return.
I'm a lousy photographer and my pics don't do them justice.
Ironically, in a densely planted setup, they tend to hide most of the
time ... hardly what I would
call 'sociable' or 'display friendly' fishes. One might catch a glimpse
during feeding times tho.
In my attempts to breed them, I observed an unusually higher count of
fungicised eggs,
unfertilized either due to immaturity or high temperature related.

All is not lost though. Leave the conditioned pair alone with a thick
wad of java moss
and a dose of benign neglect, young frys will start to appear.
They don't seem to be harassed by the adults but if extra tanks are available,
the young ones can
be fed a more generous diet of smaller live foods like BBS and
grindal
worms.
Their grow out rate is
very much slower as compared
to the
Nothobranchius species.

At about 4 months
(YES!! 4 long months) , the frys are still about
2cm ... but at least
the finnage extension is starting to develop and coloring up nicely.
