ELEVEN [PART TWO]"Impressed yet?" AJ grinned, walking in backstage during the commercial break. I stood there, transfixed in awe at the tattoo covered, hippy dressed man standing before me. All that was running through my mind was that Backstreet was definitely was back, not just for fourteen year old junior high school girls, but for me. The atmosphere was as contagious as a vicious flu epidemic, and even the most sceptical of critics (professional grunge and rock supporters and martini sipping, party hopping music gurus) had to have caught the Backstreet Bug. "It was okay" I managed weakly, almost aloof and unaffected. I watched his face fall a little, before it was replaced with a grimace. "I didn't know you were going to perform "Everybody" I remarked, watching him for some reaction. He shrugged. "We're gonna perform the other one later" Glancing at his watch, he looked back at me expectantly. "So?" I stared back blankly at him. "So, what?" He sighed in exasperation, rolling his eyes for my benefit. "Are you coming out or am I meant to drag you out there?" "Is it really necessary for me to go out there?" I had scanned the crowd while the show was going on, and all throughout their performance and it did not look promising. If looks could kill, these fourteen year olds would have had me slaughtered within seconds on stage if I appeared with AJ. "Oh, no you're not" He grabbed my wrist and began pulling me out. "You're coming out whether you like it or not, because I am not going to have my hard work on you wasted" I was hard work? Since when was I hard work? This was my assignment! He was the one following my ass! I shook my hand away from his monkey grip. "Shove your sunglasses up your ass. I'm going" I wasn't about to let him show me up. If he wanted me to appear, I'll be sure I'll appear. Now where's that custard I had this morning? ROVING LONG SHOT of crowd surrounding Rockafellar Plaza. DOLLY IN of crowd screaming and waving cameras VO of KATIE: And we're back with the Backstreet Boys. MID SHOT of KATIE standing in the middle, NICK on the left, lopsided grin, BRIAN next to him, laughing. KEVIN smiles to camera and HOWIE smiles and waves. AJ is beside him, chatting to MATT. KATIE: (to boys) That performance was fantastic, wasn't it? (crowd screams) I think the crowd agrees! MATT: (chuckles) Boys how long did it take to perfect that routine? MIDSHOT of NICK raises his eyebrows cockily, grinning. NICK: Well (crowd of girls scream, chuckles) Well, lets just say, it took a little longer for some of us than others. DOLLY to BRIAN and NICK. BRIAN punches NICK on the arm, as he laughs. BRIAN: I think it took this one longer than the lot of us! MATT: Firstly, your album Backstreet's Back has had dominant airplay on radio stations across the country and overseas. Hows it feel to have this much success worldwide? MIDSHOT of KEVIN with microphone. KEVIN: I have to say, having success worldwide was fantastic, because it's an experience like no other. But to have success in the US (points to fans) our home country... it just blows our minds! Screams from crowd. MIDSHOT of KATIE KATIE: (laughs) So with all this success, what do your families say about this? I know AJ's mom, Denise is your manager, but..." HOWIE: Y' know, it is hard on our families, and we don't get to see them as often as we'd like, but music has been our life for so long, so they do understand. AJ pokes his head in the camera. crowd screams AJ: I just wanna say, without their support, we wouldn't be here. My family, like all these guys are the backbone of our success, and without good personal relationships, we couldn't possibly do this. MATT: So personal relationships are important? ALL: Yes! (laughs) MATT: AJ, its funny you should say that, cos I was reading the paper the other day AJ chuckles as he grins selflessly at the camera. VO of MATT: ...and you've been making a bit of a stir in the media yourself. AJ's laugh can be heard as a page of New York Post and headline of 'Backstreet Rebel Caught in *NSYNC Limo'. is highlighted. Flash to Instyle shoot picture with Minerva in the white bedsheet with AJ around her. FADE OUT to MATT and AJ AJ: I didn't read that! (laughs along with the other Boys.) MATT: So with all these cameras how does she feel about this? Does she cope with it well or is she partial? AJ laughs as he dips his hat. Looks sideways, then back at the camera AJ: She... (looks off camera, then laughs self consciously) I don't think I can explain it as well as she can. Why don't you ask her yourself? Crowd screams as MATT looks surprised. MATT: Is she here? Where is she? KATIE finds MINERVA behind the band, observing the scene, undetected by the fans. AJ hops offstage and clutches MINERVA wrist, pulling her onto stage. He whispers something in her ear, not picked up by the cameras. MINERVA grimaces and gets onto stage MATT shakes her hand, as does KATIE. Crowd cheers and boos. MINERVA: Thanks for inviting me onstage. I thought I'd have to watch the Boys from the back for three hours! (laughs, looks at AJ. AJ grabs her hand) MATT: You should thank AJ here then. (Looks to AJ, who grins selflessly) As you heard before, I was asking AJ about how you cope with all these screaming girls all wanting your boyfriend. Deafening screams from crowd. MINERVA winces from the mention of word 'boyfriend' and also shrill of scream. MID SHOT of MINERVA MINERVA: It hasn't been that hard... yet! It's just incredibly tiring, because they're on tour now which means I'm also on tour. So I'm practically living their schedule as well. MATT: How so? MINERVA: Well, I guess it's like this morning, I had to get up at about five thirty to get him up, because I wouldn't see him otherwise. MATT: So you're his personal alarm clock? MINERVA laughs. MINERVA: Yeah, guess you could say that MATT: So how is the transition from virtually living your life in anonymity to having a camera in your face everywhere you go? MINERVA: (unsurely) Uh...(pauses and thinks, then looks back at camera) Well, it definitely takes getting used to, because I'm so used to y'know just doing my own thing. You just have to be really careful about what you do. MATT nods to technician behind the camera, then looks back to MINERVA Thanks MINERVA, and good luck in the future. MINERVA: (grins) Thanks MATT MATT: And we'll be back with more from the Backstreet Boys after these messages. MID SHOT of the BOYS, MATT, KATIE and MINERVA beside AJ. Clippet of "Everybody" just performed is played in background |
