SIX: Launching Operation Sceptic "June, it wouldn't hurt if you'd just stop scowling for a minute" Caitlyn whined as she lined up behind a chubby man wearing a pair of baggy khaki shorts, badly scuffed sneakers and a discolouring white shirt decorated in splotches of transparent oil stains. He reeked of cheap cologne and beer. "I still stand firm in the belief that the guy should wait in line" she argued, furrowing her eyebrows. "If he knew he was going to be late, why couldn't we just make it another time?" she argued stubbornly as Caitlyn moved to the rhythm of the line. "Because his rehearsal ran over time... his choreographer made them practise their routine three more times to get it just perfect" she explained expertly. "And you believe that lame excuse?" June questioned, astonished, just as a familiar five eight frame bounded up in the disguise of a beret, eccentric sunnies and a loud Hawaiian shirt splashed in tropical colours. "Hey there" he greeted, pulling a genuinely revamped Carter smile, which bore all teeth and fake gums. That is absolutely hideous June thought in disgust as she studied the strange ensemble. "Nice to see you again, June" Nick greeted holding his hand forward, showing no signs of remorse of the night before. If this doesn't count for something, I don't know what will he bargained silently as she accepted his hand, much to his surprise. Well, then, I guess a little nepotism does pay off. "You guys want me to stand in line?" he inquired politely as June pushed the strong boy into the line. "Thanks so much" she gritted smiling forcedly, while pulling Caitlyn aside. "Let him do it" she whispered aggressively. Nick waved the three entry tickets ten minutes later, beaming. "Lets go" he announced as he held up his left arm, which Caitlyn slid in happily. June followed reluctantly beside the pair and entered the park of make believe, not realising the remarkable situation before the pair stemmed solely from the very concept. "Aaaahh.... I'm soaked!" Caitlyn squealed as she exited an extremely soaking ride laughing loudly, much to the dismay of other park patrons. "Hey, no fair, how come you're okay?" she accused playfully as she studied a bemused Nick, who was touched by nothing more than tiny flecks of water droplets. "I think you were sprung...the person in the control booth was a girl who kept mouthing "You're the 'heaven in my eyes'...." June explained groaning as she stood there dripping in her now almost see through blue shirt. Nick stared back, grinning like an overconfident politician "Ain't I the special one?" he asked raising his eyebrows suggestively. "You wish" June said as she rolled her eyes, whilst she slammed her palm hard onto his back resulting in a loud echo. "That hurt" Nick complained, pulling on a baby voice, which eventuated into loud laughter. "Uh, guys I'm totally soaked so I'm just gonna try and dry myself off" Caitlyn announced as she walked up to them water dripping off her body like wax off a candle. "I think you look fine" replied slyly as he looked down at the slender figure whose blonde hair hung in little tresses framing her well defined features, whilst her yellow sundress clung to her figure, creating little ripples in the fabric. "Yeah right Carter" Caitlyn grinned "Like I'm ever gonna let you ogle my goodies" she teased as she ran to the toilet block without waiting for him to respond. Nick decided to waste no time in launching Operation Sceptic. As soon as Caitlyn was beyond vaulting distance, he started to speak to whom he called the Ice Maiden. "You know this day hasn't been half bad" he commented, feigning spontaneity. He glanced over slightly at June for a response. Sighing he squinted behind his sunnies at the blinding ice cream cart being wheeled around the grounds. "Yeah, I'm having an okay time too" Nick turned ninety degrees left, staring in disbelief at the girl looking coolly forwards, purposely avoiding eye contact. "Did I just he-" he began to ask, only to be cut off. "Drop the act Carter- you won't hear it again" she continued, attempting to maintain her coy facade. She failed as Nick caught a brief smile escape from her carefully pursed lips. Gotcha- Level One: success he thought triumphantly Now let's see about Level Two "What are you grinning at?" Caitlyn asked, finally emerging from the public toilet block. "Stop looking Nick- man, you're such a guy" she scolded as she wrapped her arms around herself protectively, in attempt to hide her still wet bodice. Nick glanced at June satisfactorily, grinning in a way which was unmistakably trademark to the persona of Nickolas Gene Carter. She stared back at him oddly, but he just shrugged as he threw his arm around Caitlyn. They entered yet another make-believe world, not knowing exactly how close to reality they really were.
