PROLOGUE

The chrome phone jangled furiously, like a headmistress tearing into a little kid terrified of punishment.

"June? Listen, I'm leaving in about three minutes…I thought I'd just ring to say good bye" a pubescent male voice cackled through the connection oozing with concern.

"I tried to call last night, but your line was busy" she commented, while curling up on the couch, knees tucked into her chest.

"Yeah, I was speaking to Caitlyn…" he explained somewhat apprehensively. June's flinched at the name. "Listen, about what you said on the cassette…"

Sadness clouded over her normally lively hazel brown eyes. "Oh, don't worry about it, I understand " she assured, contradictorily choking back a flood of salty water registered in the back of her throat.

"I just thought I should explain myself..." he interposed insistently, ignoring her weak reassurance.

"You don't need to say anything" June interjected sullenly, "Brian already told me the whole story" she spluttered, eyes glistening over like polished wood.

"I was really moved, you know? You almost had me turn on the waterworks" he fumbled on nervously, laden heavily in guilt.

An uncomfortable silence greeted them like snow in June, while bustling sounds of the busy arena could be heard distinctively through the receiver.

"Listen, I think I heard your flight being called" June piped up, with greater confidence. "I think it's time to say good bye" she added, almost choking back an unshed flood of tears in her throat.

"Uh… yeah, I think I gotta jet..." he replied somewhat apologetic. "I just wanted to see if you were okay before I left" he said sincerely.

"I'll be fine" she reassured him this time simulating newfound boldness, while pulling a weak smile on her tired face.

"Take care Wynters…" he bid sadly. "Don't blow the blizzards too strongly" he joked lightly. "By the way…" he stopped adding as an afterthought. "Don't be so naive" he advised softly, just as he clicked the phone down.

"Bye, Carter" she whispered sadly, still clutching the phone shakily as she heard the familiar busy signal.

Her eyes glistened over with regretful sorrow as she buried her head with her knees. Then, unleashing a part of her that she had unassumingly left behind so long ago, she finally breathed life into it and cried.
