FOUR:
My Hero, My Foe " Ted, Harry, it's cool…they're with us" the tall blonde rushed over, whilst shooting the security guards his world class smile. " But they don’t have passes, Nick" one of the guards piped up. "Hannah, Amy, didn't you pick them up this morning at the hotel like I told you to?" he scolded convincingly. The girls shook their heads unanimously, awe struck by the presence before them. The guards looked at each other, where confusion and apprehension wrote like a novel on their faces on the validity of these stories. The guards shrugged and turned back to the upper end of the corridor, releasing the girls into the custody of their saviour. Nick launched into action as soon as the guards disappeared behind the stairs. Using a notoriously standard pick up line that usually resulted in a slap in the face from the person who delivered it, Nick decided to give it a try. "I've dropped my number somewhere, can I have yours?" he asked as his voice dripped with artificial honey. He leant back casually on the wall as he beamed his blindingly white smile down at June. The girls' mouths dropped open like an entrance to a cave and stared back blankly. I took all the trouble to come backstage for that pick up line? Caitlyn thought as Nick flashed his million-dollar smile, looking back expectantly. What an ass! June thought to herself, as she studied the guy who had made various top ten lists in teenybopper magazines as the "world's hottest". Well, it doesn't look as if he needs any more wax…the wax museum will definitely have a new source to attain it from. "Mr Carter, thanks for saving us from being escorted by YOUR security guards, but Caitlyn and I have to be home soon" June supplied snootily, pushing her friend to the exit. Caitlyn followed reluctantly, still staring back at Nick's changing facial expression; from obnoxious smirk to total shock, completed comically with an "O" shaped mouth. Nick glanced back at the corridor of the deserted meet and greet rooms, only to find AJ bearing a wide grin, holding two fingers up as a sign of victory. I can’t lose face in front of these guys! Like a fox chasing it's prey, Nick sprung back, his previous set back becoming only a benchmark for what he wanted to achieve. "Hey, hey, wait up" he called loudly as he began pumping his legs faster than ever. Man, this is a new experience. Although he had sprinted many times before, Nick was not used to being the one chasing the girls; usually he would be the one running FROM the girls. Carter, there's always a first for everything he consoled himself as the girls finally stopped. "What do you want?" June growled as Nick panted for breath. "I…I…" he stuttered as he heaved heavily clutching his chest with his left hand. Gulping he continued. "I'm sorry I was such a jerk…I guess I just wasn't thinking" he spluttered as he looked for a reaction from either of the girls. Reading none, he continued "I'm sorry I used that dirty pick up line…" Man, I hope AJ is thankful for this, I'm grovelling for pete's sake! "You don't need to say that" Caitlyn softened as she shot Nick a soppy look. June nudged her in bewilderment and rolled her eyes when Caitlyn didn't respond. Gotcha! Nick thought, satisfied One down, one to go… "I'm sorry, I never caught your name" he addressed politely to June. "It's June" Caitlyn supplied, slowly regaining her composure from being star struck for so long. "I'm -" she started as she batted her eyelashes in exaggeration. "Caitlyn" he finished up for her beaming a genuine smile this time, while holding out his hand "I'm Nick-" "Carter" she finished cheesily as she clung onto his hand. Oh my god- Caitlyn screamed silently in her head. I am shaking hands with Nickolas Gene Carter! June was standing alone, arms crossed, whilst glaring at Nick. Can't she just see through his facade? He's so phoney! "So" Nick started, watching June closely "Caitlyn, June" he smiled widely "would you like to join us? The boys and I are going to grab a quick bite before we crash" "We'd love to" Caitlyn accepted as she gave June a withering Do it for me look. June rolled her eyes and reluctantly followed the two down the corridor. "Cute girl" Howie acclaimed, nudging a tired and annoyed Nick as they took a seat at the small cafe restaurant which would have been closed if they hadn't promised the owners photos and autographs for their children. The walls were lined neatly with prints of blue waters and sandy beaches to cover the slowly peeling powder blue paint. Aging black leather stools were lined along the bar, similar to a fifties diner; and the plastic imitation wood grain print used for tables had been scratched badly from constant use. "It's a game, Howard" Nick reminded him in utter annoyance, just as AJ sidled up and pulled him aside. "Nice save, Carter " AJ commended. "But you picked up the wrong one" Nick rolled his eyes in exasperation. "Bone, it doesn't matter; I still picked up- that was the deal" "Nickolas" AJ addressed patronisingly while he looked over to where Brian had positioned himself on the table, chatting animatedly to the girls. "The deal was we chose the girl… and we did not choose her" he stated pointedly. "But" Nick supplied with dread as he watched the girls from the bar. Catching Caitlyn's eyes, he waved back, automatically pasting a grin on his face. "Her friend is a sceptic, and it shows. Your 'assignment' was to pick her up, dumb ass" he chortled harshly. "But Caitlyn is so… well…." His blue eyes bore into the ceiling, deep in thought. "How should I put this…" he paused once more. "…FINE" Nick finished in exasperation." Everything June isn't" AJ just shook his head in mock disappointment. "Nickolas my man…" AJ began like a kindergarten teacher. "That’s where the challenge comes in" He said with a renewed plastic grin on his face. "It's all a matter of angles" he explained in expertise. His eyes seemed to relent for a moment. However, it was quickly replaced with a forceful shake of the head. "No…Bone! Look, I've done what you requested to a tee… I proved my point… and that’s all there is to it" Nick replied firmly as he began to turn away from an astonished AJ. "You couldn't even get a simple bet right" he jeered as Nick rolled his eyes in exasperation. "What's it going to take till you get off my back?" "'Till June falls for you" "Fine AJ… I'll do this…" Nick muttered as he finally made his way back to the table, where the waitress had brought their cheeseburgers and drinks and slid in beside June. "Hey June, could you pass me the ketchup?" Nick asked as he bit into his burger. "Sure, no problems" June replied, gritting her teeth as she slammed the red bottle decorated with dry residue in front of him, the sauce dribbling decoratively on the table. June was not going to pretend she enjoyed his company when it was evident she didn’t. "So, Brian, how's Leighanne?"
