Chess Game
BRIAN moves a piece then picks up a knight waving
it at CHARLIE as he talks.
BRIAN
Don’t you think it’s odd that chessmen are invisible?
CHARLIE smiles
CHARLIE
Yes, Brian it is odd.
BRIAN
And everybody knows what Pawns are shaped like.
CHARLIE looks up
CHARLIE
Brian!
BRIAN
Well it’s true.
CHARLIE moves a piece.
BRIAN
Why is the weather always your threat?
CHARLIE
What?
BRIAN
Every time I refuse to do something you threaten me with talking about the weather.
CHARLIE
I just can’t figure out why you think it’s so dreadful.
BRIAN
I don’t like weather. It bores me.

BRIAN
Don’t you want to know what he said?
CHARLIE
I assumed you would just tell me.
BRIAN folds his arms
CHARLIE
Fine. What’d he say, Brian?
BRIAN
Well, in much lighter terms he said for me to sod off and that he had the wrong number and he was not desperate for company no matter what it sounded like but that he might as well talk to me as he had me on the phone anyway.
BRIAN moves a piece. CHARLIE nods.
CHARLIE
What did you talk about?
BRIAN
All sorts of things. My cat and how he never liked cats and they made him itchy and how I thought he had a cat and he insisted it was strictly for his wife and he hated it.
CHARLIE moves a piece
BRIAN
Just nothing really. But I know I’ve seen him cuddle
that cat.
CHARLIE
Just like when you insisted Keith liked Bill in that special way?
BRIAN moves a piece and gives CHARLIE a dirty look.
CHARLIE
Or when you swore you saw aliens in your pool?
CHARLIE moves a piece.
CHARLIE
Or--
BRIAN
OK! Alright you’ve made your point. Anyway, I had a lot on my mind in those days.
CHARLIE
That was two weeks ago, Brian.
BRIAN
So? That’s still a while.
BRIAN moves a piece and crosses his arms.
