Meredith Birmingham

Ley Meredith Birmingham, 17, of East Ridge, passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born in Tuscaloosa, Ala., but has lived in the Chattanooga area since 1995. She was a member of Abba's House and was a born again Christian, who loved her family and friends. She was majoring in astrophysics at Chattanooga State and had a passion for the cooking and the study of astrophysics and the universe.

Survivors include her parents, Stephanie and Jim Birmingham, of East Ridge; brother, Jonathan Kilgore, of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; sister, Lucie Birmingham, of East Ridge; maternal grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs. Bill Beaty, of Tuscaloosa; grandfather, Edward Fendley, of Demoplis, Ala.; paternal grandmother and spouse, Martha and Ira Pollard; paternal grandfather and spouse, Jimmie and Diana Birmingham, all of Tuscaloosa; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, in the East Brainerd Chapel with the Rev. Ted Gocke officiating.

Treyton Collins, McCall Collins, Shane Hubbard, Josh Lewis, Andrew Morgan and Patrick Williams will serve as pallbearers.

Burial will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

The family will begin receiving friends after 4 p.m. today and prior to the service on Wednesday.

Gloria Blevins

Gloria "Dordie" May Blevins, 59, a native of Sale Creek, went to be with Jesus from a Murfreesboro hospital Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, with her family by her side.

She attended Sale Creek Church of God and was a member of the Class of 1967 at Sale Creek High School. In 1968 she married Charles Blevins of Dayton and they moved to Murfreesboro where they raised one daughter.

Dordie's health had failed in recent years and her husband was a very loving and caring help to her, along with their daughter Sandy. Dordie was an organ doner hoping that she could make life better by what she gave. She was a friendly, beautiful outgoing person. To know her was to love her. She will be missed.

Preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Agnes Hodge May; two brothers, infants, Terry and Ronnie May; one sister, Effie May Ward.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Blevins; daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Marty; four brothers, Bill and Ted (Vickie) May, of Graysville, Ben (Paula) May, of Dayton, Donnie May, of Bakewell Mountain; and one sister, Edith (Tommy) Presley, of Bakewell Mountain; one aunt, Frances Hodge, of Dayton; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

No service was held at her request.

Rowena Pickett Brewton, 74, of Soddy-Daisy, died on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008.

She was a 1951 graduate of Red Bank High School.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Charles Lee Brewton; parents, Herbert Pickett Sr. and Sewilla Tate Pickett; sisters, Celia Martin, Betty Sue Boulton and Erma Ruth Pickett; brother, Herbert Pickett Jr.

Survivors include her sons, Charles Lee ( Bonny) Brewton Jr., of Chattanooga, Robert Timothy (Tammie) Brewton, Jeffrey Scott (Holly) Brewton, Keith Patrick (Wendy) Brewton, Heath Brewton; grandchildren, Jeremy Brewton, Ashley Brewton, Brittney Brewton, Holly Brewton, Hunter Brewton, Drake Brewton, and Tanner Brewton; great-grandchild, Abbey Brewton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today, Feb. 5, 2008, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Bert Jones officiating.

Interment will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends for visitation from noon until the time of service today, Feb. 5, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Charles Caudell Jr.

Charles F. Caudell Jr., 81, of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, at his home in Hickory Valley Retirement Community.

Imogene Cortese

Imogene Ruhl Cortese, 92, passed away Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, at her home.

She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. During World War II she worked in Washington, D.C. for the War Department and later for TVA in Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Cortese.

Survivors include her niece, Elizabeth Clark, of Keokuk, Iowa; and a nephew, John Clark, his wife and two children, Sarah Ann and Margaret Clark all of Keokuk, Iowa.

Betty Cotter

Betty Evatt Cotter, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008.

Betty was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and a 1942 graduate of Central High School. She retired as director of American Cancer Society with over 32 years of service.

Betty was a former member of OLPH Catholic Church and currently a member of St. Stephens Catholic Church. She was very active in the Ladies of Charity.

Betty is survived by her two children, Craig Cotter and Joan Williams King; five grandchildren, Lindsay Williams Hook, Brad Cotter, Alex Williams, Suzanne Williams and Abby Cotter; two great-grandchildren, Ezra Howard and Greta Hook; brother, former sheriff H. Q. Evatt; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Chattanooga Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Leola "Babe" Dunbar, 94, of Harrison, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008.

A member of Harrison United Methodist Church, she dedicated her life to serving God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dunbar; parents, Fred and Lizzie Adamson; sisters, Flarrie Roberson and Doris Jackson; brothers, Norman, Howard and Edward Adamson.

Surviving are two sisters, Marie Johnson and Ruth Morgan.

Magnolia D. Evans, of Chattanooga, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, in a local hospital.

Nadine Daniels Gould, of Chattanooga, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at her home.

The widow of Samuel P. Gould, she was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

Surviving are a niece, Twyla Oertle, of Victorville Calif.; her husband's niece, Jane McEntee, of Venice, Fla.; and her husband's nephew, Fred T. Gould Jr., of Rochelle Park, N.J.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at Grace Episcopal Church, 20 Belvoir Ave., with the Rev. Lou Parsons officiating.

The family will receive friends in the Bishop Barth Room at the church for one hour before the service.

Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

John Keplinger, 86, of Collegedale, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008.

Services were held on Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery.

Billie Martin

Billie "Bill" Martin, 68, of Chattanooga, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, at his residence.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, he was the son of the late Chester and Nellie C. Martin, and was preceded in death by four brothers, James Calvin, Jack, Chester and Ralph Martin.

Survivors include one brother, Paul F. Martin, Chattanooga; two sisters, Barbara McDowell, Suwanee, Ga., and Betty Combs, Hixson; several nieces and nephews.

The body has been cremated.

Samuel Roden

Samuel Terie Roden, of Lookout Valley, passed away on Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, at the age of 66.

He was born Aug. 23, 1941.

Sam served his country for 31 years. He first enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1961. He also served in the Army Reserve and the U.S. Naval Reserve as a SeaBee. He retired from the Naval Reserve as a Chief Petty Officer. Sam was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Sam also retired from TVA and had served in the Chattanooga Police Dept. as an auxillary officer. Sam was a member of Lookout Valley Lodge 673. Sam was an active member of VFW Post 4848. Sam was also a member of the Vietnam Veterans Association.

Sam was preceded in death by his father, Rufus Paul Roden; and mother, Alice Roden Hensley.

Sam is survived by his wife of 50 years, Reba Ann Roden; sons, Bryan (Tammy) Roden, of Rash, Ala., Sam Roden Jr., of Buford, Ga.; daughters, Cindy (Mark) Harwood, of Sale Creek, Becky Roden, of Chattanooga; sister, Pearl Roden Cooley, of Sale Creek; half sisters, Linda Hensley and Ellen Hensley, of Chattanooga; half brother, Dennis Chuncey; Sam also has eight grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Wann Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.

Gwendolyn Seal

Gwendolyn May Kenn Seal, 86, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, at Sliver Bluff Village in Canton, N.C., from natural causes.

A native of Miami, Fla., she was a former resident of Texas, Nashville and had lived in the Chattanooga area for 40 years before retiring to Canton, N.C., in 1996.

Mrs. Seal was a retired longtime pastor's secretary for Chattanooga First Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She also worked as a producer for the "Search" television ministry in Chattanooga in the 1970s and was a bookkeeper for contractors. She was a former member of the Scenic Land Chapter of the American Business Women's Association, a former CONTACT telephone volunteer in Chattanooga and a past director of the Better Living Center in Chattanooga.

Mrs. Seal was a graduate of Columbia Union Junior College in Tacoma Park, Md., and Forest Lake Academy in Apopka, Fla. She was a member of Mount Pisgah Seventh-day Adventist Church upon her death, and a long-time member of Chattanooga First Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she was active in the choir, directed the Children's Choir, served on the board and volunteered in many capacities.

She was married to John Benjamin "Bennie" Seal for 45 years, who preceded her in death in 1988. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Bertha Kenny; three brothers, Marcus, Fisher and Levon Kenny; a sister, Geraldine Stevens; and son, Frederec Daniel Seal.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Jacobs, wife of Gary Jacobs, Lancaster, Pa., and Marcia Cooper, wife of Claude Cooper, Anchorage, Alaska; and a grandson, Douglas McCloud, Anchorage, Alaska.

Private services will be held for the family.

Carey York

Carey Wayne York, 42, of East Ridge, passed away Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He had lived in the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas for most of his life and was of the Church of God faith. He was also employed with Regional Recycling and was an avid Race Car fan and enthusiast.

He was preceded in death by his father, James C. York; and two brothers, Orville and Arnold York.

Survivors include his mother, June York, of Rossville; wife, Jennifer York; daughter, Chasity York, both of East Ridge; two brothers, Franklin York, of Hixson and James York, of Birchwood; two sisters, Emily Bible, of Rossville and Crandell Plexico, of Pawleys Island, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, in the Fort Oglethorpe Chapel.

Burial will follow in Collier Cemetery in Dunlap, Tenn.

Born in Murfreesboro, Tenn., she was preceded in death by husband, G.P. Haymore Jr.; parents, Mary Young and Tom Hord Jr.; and sister, Louise McCullough.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Young Pinson, Hendersonville, Tenn.; son, Pittman (Linda) Haymore, Irving, Texas; and grandchildren, Elliott Pinson, Courtney Haymore and Christopher Haymore. She is also survived by her brothers, Tommy (Betty) Hord, Murfreesboro and Charles (Joy) Hord, Murfreesboro.

Aurelio Anchondo Jr.

ROSSVILLE -- Aurelio Anchondo Jr., 65, departed this life Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008.

He was born in Bakersville, Calif., to the late Aurelio and Amy Zabala Anchondo. Aurelio proudly served in the U.S. Army, retired from McKee Baking Co. after 25 years of service, and was a member of Anchor of Hope in Rossville.

Mr. Anchondo was dedicated to his faith, family and his friends and made it a lifetime practice of opening his home and heart to everyone around him.

Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Linda Carole Anchondo; children and their spouses, Chris and Tina Anchondo, of Ringgold, Teresa and Michael Gravitt, Brian and Cathy Anchondo, all of Rossville, Michael and Jennifer Anchondo, of Ringgold; he was blessed with eight grandchildren, Michael, Jessy Gravitt, Kayleigh, Gavin Anchondo, Jacob, Kayla, Josh, Stephanie; two great-grandchildren, Halia, Logan; siblings, Connie Banuelous, of Upland, Calif., Andrew Anchondo, of Perris, Calif., Judy Tate, of San Diego, Calif., Delia Anchondo, of El Centro, Calif.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 in the chapel with the Rev. Arvell James Thomasson and the Rev. Dan Mouw officiating.

Gwendolyn Seal

Gwendolyn May Kenny Seal, 86, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, at Sliver Bluff Village in Canton, N.C., from natural causes.

A native of Miami, Fla., she was a former resident of Texas, Nashville and had lived in the Chattanooga area for 40 years before retiring to Canton, N.C., in 1996.

Mrs. Seal was a retired long-time pastor's secretary for Chattanooga First Seventh-day Adventist Church. She also worked as a producer for the "Search" television ministry in Chattanooga in the 1970s and was a bookkeeper for contractors. She was a former member of the Scenic Land Chapter of the American Business Women's Association, a former CONTACT telephone volunteer in Chattanooga and a past director of the Better Living Center in Chattanooga.

Mrs. Seal was a graduate of Columbia Union Junior College in Tacoma Park, Md., and Forest Lake Academy in Apopka, Fla. She was a member of Mount Pisgah Seventh-day Adventist Church upon her death, and a longtime member of Chattanooga First Seventh-Day Adventist Church, where she was active in the choir, directed the Children's Choir, served on the board and volunteered in many capacities.

She was married to John Benjamin "Bennie" Seal for 45 years, who preceded her in death in 1988. She also was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Bertha Kenny; three brothers, Marcus, Fisher and Levon Kenny; a sister, Geraldine Stevens; and son, Frederec Daniel Seal.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Jacobs, wife of Gary Jacobs, of Lancaster, Pa., and Marcia Cooper, wife of Claude Cooper, of Anchorage, Alaska; and a grandson, Douglas McCloud, of Anchorage, Alaska.

Private services will be held for the family.

Lucy was of the Episcopal faith. She was born in Virginia and had lived in Orlando for 35 years before moving to Chattanooga in 1996. Since 1997, Lucy had been a resident of NHC in Rossville. She loved the TV show "The Price is Right" and her laughter was enjoyed by all who knew her.

Lucy was the wife of the late Charles R. Smith Sr. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Dailey, Ora Albert and Myrtle Williams; brothers, James C. Poff and George C. Poff Sr.; and two grandchildren, Heather Fuller and Brian Smith.

Survivors include her son, Jerry (Judy Wallace) Smith, of Chattanooga; stepson, Charles R. TRACY CITY -- Edwene Curtis Baggenstoss, retired banker, passed away Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, at a Sewanee, Tenn. hospital, at the age of 90.

She was the wife of the late Charles W. Baggenstosss of Tracy City. She was born on Aug. 24, 1917, the daughter of the late Arthur Rogers and Minnie Lovelace Curtis of Coalmont, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Alene Curtis, Margaret (Jim) Anderson and Williemai (Grady) Mullican, and brothers Arthur Roy Curtis, John E. Curtis and James D. Curtis.

Survivors include her daughters, Louise (Jerome T.) Bouldin, of Tracy City, Margaret Beaumont, of Sewanee, and Ann Baggenstoss, of Tracy City; her grandchildren, Alice (Dean) Arnold and Charles Andrew Bouldin, of Atlanta, Jessie (Pete) Schmed, of Chattanooga, Charles Houston Beaumont, of Sewanee, and Henry F. (Stuart) Beaumont, of Raleigh, N.C.; one great-grandchild, Jacob Walker Arnold; sister, Betty (the late Lillard) Campbell, of Coalmont; and brothers, William R. Curtis, of Pelham, and Thomas L. Miss Edwene began her career in 1935 with Sewanee Fuel and Iron and Coalmont Coal and Coke Co. Later she worked for Coalmont Savings Bank and First Bank of Marion County retiring in 1986 after 30 years of service. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years and she continued to work until 2004, managing Hillcrest and Meadowood Apartments in Tracy City with her lifelong friend, Marie Flury Tate.

She was a member of Christ Church Episcopal, Tracy City. She served as an adult leader of the Young Churchmen and Girl Scouts. She also was an active member of the Ladies Auxilary of the American Legion

Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. CST Thursday, Feb. 7, at Christ Church Episcopal, Tracy City and burial in Tracy City Cemetery.

ROSSVILLE -- Aurelio Anchondo Jr., 65, departed this life Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008.

He was born in Bakersville, Calif., to the late Aurelio and Amy Zabala Anchondo. Aurelio proudly served in the U.S. Army, retired from McKee Baking Co. after 25 years of service, and was a member of Anchor of Hope in Rossville.

Mr. Anchondo was dedicated to his faith, family and his friends and made it a lifetime practice of opening his home and heart to everyone around him.

Survivors are daughter, Linda Henson, of Ringgold; son, David and Ceil Love, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; grandchildren, JoEllen Price, of Chattanooga, and Sonja and Melvin Sosebee, of Fort Oglethorpe; great-grandchildren, Kristan Price, of Alpharetta, Ga., Johnathon Hughes, of Ringgold, and Matthew Sosebee, of Fort Oglethorpe; sisters, Thelma Kelly, of Winter Haven, Fla., Edith Hawkins, of Chattanooga, Mary Helton, Martha and Frank Roper, all of Rocky Face, Ga.; brothers, Jerry and Louise Ingraham, of Chatsworth, Ga.; special friend, Geneva Carter, of Ringgold; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be noon Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Penson officiating.

Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

CHICKAMAUGA -- Martha "Pat" Parker, 89, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, in a local health care facility.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Charles McElhaney officiating.

Interment will be in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

RINGGOLD -- Fannie Lee Carter White, 80, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at her residence.

A lifelong resident of the North Georgia area, she was a former employee of Edgewood Chenille and was a member of New Friendship Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Bertha Parsons Carter; two sisters, Venice Carter and Betty White; and four brothers, J.R., Robert, James and R.C. Carter.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph "Buck" White, of Ringgold; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Eddie Fincher, of Ringgold, and Barbara and Steve Freeman, of Winchester, Tenn.; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sandra White, of Apison; three sisters, Marie Hullender, Farris Parsons and Martha Carter, all of Ringgold; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Steve Freeman and Pastor Ed Parsons officiating.

Interment will follow at New Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 3 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 8 a.m. until funeral time at the funeral home.
