Evita Perón

Eva Perón was a child who was born in to a poverty stricken family in Los Toldos. After she moved to Buenos Aires when she was fifteen, she became famous as a radio soap opera actress. Eva, also known as “Evita” by her followers, met her soon to be husband, Juan Perón, on January 15, 1944, during a convert to benefit victims of an earthquake. A year after their first meeting, they were wed. Together, they courted the working-class poor with promises of higher wages and better working conditions. When Juan Perón was elected president in 1946 of Argentina, Eva became the first lady of Argentina and was adored by her people. Evita became a tireless champion of the people. She went to the slums of the poor and gave them gifts. She formed a charitable foundation that built hospitals, schools, and orphanages, which provided many services for Argentina’s poor. Not only did she help the poor, but she also helped the women of Argentina. She campaigned for women’s right to vote and equal pay for equal work.

Eva tried to be the vice presidential candidate for her husbands office, but once the army made it clear that they would not allow her to be in office, she withdrew herself from the running. Sadly, not even a year later, Evita, the public’s lover, died of cancer. There are plenty of memorials in Argentina to make sure she is always remembered. In addition with the pictures and monuments and street names, there is a movie titled “Evita” that is in memory of Eva Perón.
