... Under The Spreading Chestnut Tree
The biggest problem at the moment is the lack of acknowledgement of how many of the worlds problems are caused and magnified by the power of the rich elite.
Don't conufse me with a conspiracy theorist, i don't think they're employing secret police to steal us away to concentration camps in the middle of the night or anything, the power they have is more subtle and far more scary.
Propaganda is the best tool the capitalists have to work with. They make us feel stupid, ugly and scared so we don't try to stop them.
Beauty magazines make us feel ugly, some people to the point that they feel too self-conscious to want to leave their homes. THEN in the same issue they promise to give us ways to make ourselves look fabulous so we're constantly made to feel that we're hideous AND that the very magazines that make us feel this way are going to help us feel better, so we carry on buying them. Anyone who's read 1984 please raise your hands. Anyone who hasn't, read it, you'll not regret it.
Another example, advertised on TV are all these toothpastes that promise to provide you with healthy, fresh breath, and they make everyone paranoid that their breath smells and that society will reject them for this. But nearly ALL toothpastes contain sodium lauryl sulfate, a SOAP, which dries out peoples mouths, leading to bad breath. So when when they realise it's not working, the paranoia comes back and they go and buy a better, more expensive, toothpaste.
This isn't just limited to personal hygiene, it's just a good example because the drive to meet people of the oppoiste sex in hopes of "mating" with them is naturally so high, and it shows how they've used our desires against us.
They're very clever like that, the issue that led to the beginning of the destruction of Earth was our desire to find comfort in a terrifying world, now they're preying on us by inducing a heightened state of fear and then selling us our comforts, like carrot-led-donkeys.
"[On the Columbine shootings]...the media wants to take it and spin it, and turn it into fear, because then you're watching television, you're watching the news, you're being pumped full of fear, there's floods, there's AIDS, there's murder, cut to commercial, buy the Acura, buy the Colgate, if you have bad breath they're not going to talk to you, if you have pimples, the girl's not going to fuck you, and it's just this campaign of fear, and consumption, and that's what I think it's all based on, the whole idea of 'keep everyone afraid, and they'll consume." - Marilyn Manson on Bowling For Columbine
Watch Bowling For Columbine by Michael Moore (his site's ok, a bit too focused on the Iraq War at the moment but hey). And Farenheit 9-11 while you're at it. They're not perfect films, but they hit the nail on the head with the Fear issue. Capitalism thrives on fear, because people buy more when they're scared. Not just things like canned food and water tanks at a scary time of war, but in normal "peacetime" the entire infrastructure of America-like countries is based upon selling lollipops to frightened children (reference to a doctors office, in case it was too vague o.O).
Have you ever heard, or used, the phrase "comfort-eating" while someone's in the middle of a stressful period? what we don't realise is that we're ALWAYS in a stressful period, we just don't notice because of all the comfort's we're being sold. McDonalds, the evil empire. It's a pefect example of comfort eating, the fattest nations on the planet are the ones that are most like America, which is the most capitalist of all nations. People in the USA are being preyed on by capitalists more than anyone, that's why the obesity rate is so high, because they're scared by the media, and mcdonalds is right there to serve them up some fat-fried comfort.
The poor old American people are made to feel small and isolated, and yet at the same time feel like they're part of the best thing in the world. That's how people are suckered in to patriotism, they're subtley told that they as an individual are nothing, and yet if they wave the american flag enough they can be a part of the "best" thing in the world.
America is rapidly becoming the most right-wing conservative facist-christian nation in the world, and every other one is following suit. All because the governments and the greedy capitalist industries have allied to make war on their people. To attack their self-esteem and sell them false hopes in patriotism, consumerism and right-wing-religions.
"Bad leadership and ego's unfettered and free Who feed on the people they're supposed to lead" - Faithless - Mass Destruction
Americanised democracy is dangerous too. We have it in the UK now and it's spreading fast. There's more here, but basically we're told that we're in free countries, that we have a say in what goes on in government. But we don't. We elect a party, they do what they want for 4 years then we elect a different one and they spend their 4 years undoing everything the other one did, and the cycle goes on. Usually there are only two major parties, and they keep getting increasingly similar in their policies. So we end up having no say in anything that goes on on a national or global scale.
Politics is also just a SMALL example of how the entire social structure at the moment is geared up to make us simultaneously feel that we have complete control over what happens, also and that we can't do anything about it because we're just one person. It's all just an excellent uses of the concept of doublethink. (George Orwell - 1984)
"The labyrinthine world of doublethink. To know and to not know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefuly-constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictoy and believing in both of them." - (Winston Smith, p40) 1984 - George Orwell
We need to get out from under the capitalist pillow that's smothering our freedom and happiness. 1984 was originally written about a Communist society gone to hell. The fascio-democrats and the capitalists read this book, and thought, "hey, we can use this stuff".
And they Have.
