Welcome to David Westfall's news page regarding his novel, Silvarum. This section of our site will be devoted to providing updates, explanations, and previews of the story he is writing. It will also include cultural notes and guides about the societies populating his sci-fi universe. To provide a basic summary of the probable storyline, Silvarum will be a story about an alien culture inhabiting a planet coveted strongly by the human race. This is a very important planet because it is the only known planet in the galaxy that is capable of growing the planet, jokingly called panacea (Panchrestum medicamentum) by the human scientific community--a plant that can cure nearly any disease, and save the mortally wounded who are even inches from death. While the interstellar government continually debates the matter of how to harvest the plant and prevent terrorism and wars over it, two scientists are dispatched to the planet itself to study the world and determine its habitability for humans. There they find a vast population of strange beings that live in the jungles on the primary continent, whose society and very lives rely on the plant. Inevitably, it appears that they will also be caught up in the conflict.
