Computers killed the Role-Playing star

The explosion of the personal computer and the beginnings of the home videogame market gave the pen-n-paper RPG's there biggest competition. Games such as Wizardry, Ultima, Bards Tale, and Might & Magic all tried to take the RPG experience and bring it to your home without the need of other gamers. This was hitting the role play games in one of their weakest spots, getting a bunch of like minded people together at the same time for many sessions. With a computer you could play the game whenever you have free time.

Now-a-days, the games like Everquest, Ultima Online, Diablo and Neverwinter Nights, let you recreate virtual fantasy worlds with some elements of the RPG. Meeting with real people on the net and getting immersed in the imaginative lands are becoming closer to a typical role playing session.
