I know it's sorta shallow but it can't be overlooked...HE'S HOT! So what if he's blue and somewhat rocky? The way his shiny (blue, purple, green) hair goes over his one eye, his body isn't bad either (the scrub-a-dub scene), yeah... His coolness. The first time I saw him I was just struck with how incredibly cool he was. His mad skills. A swordsman and a shamanic sorceror. He's skilled. His intelligence. Unlike some of the characters on Slayers who you realize their intelligence more gradually, Zel just comes off as smart. He knows what he's doing. His drive. Zel is ambitious. Although sometimes his goals led him astray--the wish to become stronger, for example, or being a bit of a turncoat--he is driven. Being a turncoat is cool. Not many characters do it, and you gotta admit he has guts to do it. Besides, all the more reason to cheer when he realizes what a baka he was. Anyway, when he freed Lina and turned sides was the moment I first started to get a thump in my heart when I saw him. His wannabe coolness. Okay. Sometimes Zel is cool, and sometimes Zel just wants to be cool. Like when he was described as a heartless mystic swordsman and he gave a smug sorta expression. When he blushes, he is just SO KAWAII! Nothing is cuter than a character blushing who normally doesn't blush. And he blushes purple! He's a wanderer. You can hit him and he doesn't even get hurt (or at least you do too) You can use him as an anchor if you happen to forget one. His voice--his gorgeous voice!!! His English voice-actor is good and all, but you don't know Zel till you hear his seiyuu--Hikaru Mordikawa. And then listen is his two image songs We Are and More Than Words, and you'll understand.
