                          Microsoft Releases New 'Critical' Patches

                          Microsoft Corp. today released an unprecedented number of software security updates to plug flaws in its products, including seven "critical" defects that it said hackers could use to hijack vulnerable computers running the Windows operating system.

The free updates, available at Microsoft's Windows Update Web site, are designed to fix at least 21 new vulnerabilities, several of which reside on nearly every version of the Windows operating system and affect hundreds of millions of computers. Microsoft rated seven of the flaws critical, its most dire warning, saying that the holes could allow attackers to take control of affected PCs just by convincing users to visit certain Web sites. Three of the flaws reside on the company's Internet Explorer Web browser. "I've never seen Microsoft release this many patches at one time," said Darwin Herdman, chief technology officer at Red Siren, a Pittsburgh based Internet security company. "The install base for these flaws is enormous." Oliver Friedrichs, senior manager of security response at Cupertino, Calif.-based Internet security company Symantec Corp., said he is worried about a group of four flaws in the way Windows processes images and other digital content. These vulnerabilities, which apply to nearly all versions of Windows, pose the greatest danger for Windows home users, Friedrichs said. Other computer experts worried about the security holes affecting software products mainly used in large and mid-sized business. Russ Cooper, chief scientist at Herndon, Va.-based TruSecure Corp., pointed to the patch intended to plug a critical software flaw in Microsoft's Server 2003 operating system and Exchange Server 2003, a program that manages incoming and outgoing e-mail. The flaw in Exchange could allow hackers to take control over unsuspecting computer users' mail servers, forcing the computers to send spam and "phishing" e-mail scams. "There are all kinds of bad things you could do with this flaw since Exchange servers are installed in some pretty high-profile companies," Cooper said. Nearly all of the patches released today that affect Windows XP (news - web sites) -- the operating system of choice of more than 200 million home computer users -- were included in Service Pack 2, a massive security update Microsoft released in August. Consequently, XP users who have installed Service Pack 2 only must install two of the patches made available Tuesday. One of those patches covers an Internet Explorer security hole rated "important" by Microsoft. The other is a re-release of a fix Microsoft released last month to mend a problem in the way the Windows operating system and Microsoft Office products process digital image files that could let attackers take control of affected PCs. Hackers have been exploiting the problem to conduct relatively minor attacks for weeks now. Microsoft said it re-issued the patch because it did not install properly on many PCs. That re-issue also was designed to make it easier for people to install last month's fix. The September patch was included in Service Pack 2, and was made available through Microsoft's Windows Update site and its automatic update service. But many security experts criticized Microsoft for not making it clear that people with Office XP installed still needed to visit Microsoft's Office Update Web site to install an additional fix to be completely protected. As a result of that feedback, Microsoft has agreed to make this particular patch for its Office XP patch available via its Windows Update site, said Stephen Toulouse, Microsoft's security program manager. Toulouse said Microsoft plans to roll out a one-stop Microsoft Update site sometime next year that provides automatic updates for all of the company's products from a single source.

                                  Rove e-mailed security official about CIA talk By John Solomon, Associated Press WASHINGTON — Prosecutors investigating a CIA officer's blown cover gathered e-mail evidence that a top White House intelligence official knew Bush confidant Karl Rove had spoken to a reporter just days before the journalist identified the covert operative.
                                  Rove told then-deputy national security adviser Stephen Hadley in the July 11, 2003, e-mail that he had spoken with Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper and tried to caution him away from some allegations that CIA operative Valerie Plame's husband was making about faulty Iraq intelligence. "I didn't take the bait," Rove wrote in the message, disclosed to The Associated Press. In the memo, Rove recounted how Cooper tried to question him about whether President Bush had been hurt by the new allegations Plame's husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, had been making. The White House turned the e-mail over to prosecutors, and Rove told a grand jury about it last year during testimony in which he also acknowledged discussing Plame's covert work for the CIA with Cooper and syndicated columnist Robert Novak. Rove, however, told the grand jury he first learned of Plame's CIA work from journalists, not government sources. Just days before the e-mail, Plame's husband had written a newspaper opinion piece accusing the Bush administration of twisting prewar Iraq intelligence, including a "highly doubtful" report that Saddam Hussein bought nuclear materials from the African country of Niger. "Matt Cooper called to give me a heads-up that he's got a welfare reform story coming," Rove wrote Hadley, who has since risen to the top job of national security adviser. "When he finished his brief heads-up he immediately launched into Niger. Isn't this damaging? Hasn't the president been hurt? I didn't take the bait, but I said if I were him I wouldn't get Time far out in front on this." Frederick Jones, a spokesman for Hadley, said Friday he could not comment due to the continuing criminal investigation. Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin, said his client answered all the questions prosecutors asked during three grand jury appearances. He said Rove never invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination or Bush's executive privilege guaranteeing confidential advice from aides. Rove, Bush's closest adviser, told a grand jury the e-mail was consistent with his recollection that his intention in talking with Cooper wasn't to divulge Plame's identity but to caution the reporter against certain allegations Plame's husband was making, according to legal professionals familiar with Rove's testimony. They spoke only on condition of anonymity because of the secrecy of the grand jury investigation. Rove sent the e-mail shortly before leaving the White House early for a family vacation that weekend, already aware that Novak was planning an article about Plame and Wilson in his column, the legal sources said. Rove also knew that then-CIA director George Tenet was about to issue a dramatic statement that took responsibility for some bad Iraq intelligence but that also called into question some of Wilson's assertions, the sources said. Republicans cheered the latest revelations Friday, saying they showed Rove wasn't trying to hurt Plame but instead was trying to informally warn reporters to be cautious about some of Wilson's claims. "What it says is, Karl Rove wasn't the leaker, he was actually the recipient of the information, not the provider," Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman said on Fox News. "So there are probably a lot of folks in Washington who have prejudged this, who have rushed to judgment who are trying to smear Karl Rove." Democrats, however, said that even if Rove wasn't the leaker, someone still divulged Plame's identity and possibly violated the law. House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and other party leaders asked House Speaker Dennis Hastert on Friday to let Congress hold hearings into the controversy regardless of the criminal probe now under way. "In previous Republican Congresses the fact that a criminal investigation was under way did not prevent extensive hearings from being held on other, much less significant matters," Pelosi wrote. Federal law prohibits government officials from divulging the identity of an undercover intelligence officer. But in order to bring charges, prosecutors must prove the official knew the officer was covert and nonetheless knowingly divulged his or her identity. Rove's conversations with Novak and Cooper took place just days after Wilson suggested in his opinion piece in The New York Times that some of the intelligence related to Iraq's nuclear weapons program was used to exaggerate the Iraqi threat. Summarizing a trip he made to Africa on behalf of the CIA, Wilson wrote that he'd concluded it was highly doubtful the nation of Niger had sold uranium yellowcake to Iraq. Tenet issued a lengthy statement five days later saying he never should have allowed Bush to use the Niger information in his State of the Union address but that Wilson's report did not resolve whether Iraq was seeking uranium from abroad.

                                  Mohammed portrays those two hijackers as central to the plot, and even more important than Mohammed Atta, initially identified by Americans as the likely hijacking ringleader. Mohammed said he communicated with al-Hazmi and al-Mihdhar while they were in the United States by using Internet chat software, the reports state.
                                  Mohammed said al-Hazmi and al-Mihdhar were among the four original operatives bin Laden assigned to him for the plot, a significant revelation because those were the only two hijackers whom U.S. authorities were frantically seeking for terrorist ties in the final days before Sept. 11.
                                  U.S. authorities continue to investigate the many statements that Mohammed has made in interrogations, seeking to eliminate deliberate misinformation. But they have been able to corroborate with other captives and evidence much of his account of the Sept. 11 planning.

                                  SAUDIS SELECTED
                                  Mohammed told his interrogators the hijacking teams were originally made up of members from different countries where al-Qaida had recruited, but that in the final stages bin Laden chose instead to use a large group of young Saudi men to populate the hijacking teams. 
                                  As the plot came closer to fruition, Mohammed learned \ldblquote there was a large group of Saudi operatives that would be available to participate as the muscle in the plot to hijack planes in the United States,\rdblquote one report says Mohammed told his captors.
                                  Saudi Arabia was bin Laden home, though it revoked his citizenship in the 1990s, and he reviled its alliance with the United States during the Gulf War and beyond. Saudis have suggested for months that bin Laden has been trying to drive a wedge between the United States and their kingdom, hoping to fracture the alliance.
                                  U.S. intelligence has suggested that Saudis were chosen, instead, because there were large numbers willing to follow bin Laden and they could more easily get into the United States because of the countries  friendly relations.
                                  Mohammed interrogation report states he told Americans some of the original operatives assigned to the plot did not make it because they had trouble getting into the United States.

                                  CIA INTERROGATING
                                  Mohammed was captured in a March 1 raid by Pakistani forces and CIA operatives in Rawalpindi. He is being interrogated by the CIA at an undisclosed location.
                                  He told interrogators about other terror plots that were in various stages of planning or had been temporarily disrupted when he was captured, including one planned for Singapore.
                                  The sources who allowed AP to review the reports insisted that specific details not be divulged about those operations because U.S. intelligence continues to investigate some of the methods and search for some of the operatives.
                                  The interrogation reports make dramatically clear that Mohammed and al-Qaida were still actively looking to strike U.S., Western and Israeli targets across the world as of this year.

                                  SEPT. 11 ORIGINS\par
                                  Mohammed told his interrogators he had worked in 1994 and 1995 in the Philippines with Ramzi Yousef, Abdul Hakim Murad and Wali Khan Amin Shah on the foiled Bojinka plot to blow up 12 Western airliners simultaneously in Asia.
                                  The U.S. official who spoke to NBC News on condition of anonymity said the Sept. 11 plan was a revision of plans Mohammed and Yousef, his nephew, tried to put together in the Philippines.

                                  Mohammed said through the various iterations of the plot, he considered using a scaled-down version of the Bojinka plan that would have bombed commercial airliners, and that he even contemplated attempting to down the planes using shoe bombs, one report said.
                                  The plot, he said, eventually evolved into hijacking a small number of planes in the United States and East Asia and either having them explode or crash into targets simultaneously, the reports stated.
                                  By 1999, the four original operatives picked for the plot traveled to Afghanistan to train at one of bin Lade camps. The focus, Mohammed said, was on specialized commando training, not piloting jets.
                                  Mohammed  interrogations have revealed the planning and training of operatives was extraordinarily meticulous, including how to blend into American society, read telephone yellow pages, and research airline schedules.
                                  A key event in the plot, Mohammed told his interrogators, was a meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in January 2000, that included al-Mihdhar, al-Hazmi and other al-Qaida operatives. The CIA learned of the meeting beforehand and had it monitored by Malaysian security, but it did not realize the significance of the two eventual hijackers until just before the attacks

                                  ASIA ATTACK DROPPED
                                  The interrogation reports state bin Laden further trimmed Mohammed  plans in spring 2000 when he canceled the idea for hijackings in East Asia, thus narrowing it to the United States. Bin Laden thought   it would be too difficult to synchronize attacks in the United States and Asia, one interrogation report quotes Mohammed as saying.
                                  Mohammed said around that time he reached out to an al-Qaida linked group in southeast Asia known as Jemaah Islamiyah. He began  recruiting JI operatives for inclusion in the hijacking plot as part of his second wave of hijacking attacks to occur after Sept. 11,  one summary said.
                                  Later, Hambali operative began training possible recruits for the second wave, according to the interrogation report.
                                  One of those who received training in Malaysia before coming to the United States was Zacarias Moussaoui, the Frenchman accused of conspiring with the Sept. 11 attacks. Moussaoui has denied being part of the Sept. 11 plot, and U.S. and foreign intelligence officials have said he could have been set for hijacking a plane in a later wave of attacks.

Exit polls show that one in five voters were described as people of faith, a strong conservative voting bloc that undoubtedly assured Bush of his reelection.

                                              		       In response to a question about the importance of capturing Saddam, Bush said: “The definition for victory is for there to be a free and peaceful Iraq. And yes, we’d like to capture or kill him, as well. And we will at some point in time.”
                                                     The alleged Saddam audiotape, meanwhile, called for Iraqi men and women to step up their fight against the U.S. occupation.
                                                     “You Mujahedeen, Iraqis and women, increase your attacks on your enemies,” the voice said. It sounded like Saddam’s, but there was no way to independently verify who the speaker was.
                                                     The man called on U.S. forces to withdraw from Iraq immediately.
                                                     “We call on you to withdraw your armies as soon as possible and without any conditions or restrictions, because there is no reason for you to suffer more losses, which will be disastrous for the Americans,” he said, claiming that the recording was made in “mid-September.”
                                                     The man also called on Iraqis to protest against occupation in the streets, to “beat the walls in protest” and to donate money to the resistance.
                                                     The last purported Saddam tape was broadcast Sept. 1 by the Al-Jazeera television network, and the CIA said it was likely authentic.

                                              REVENGE ATTACKS FEARED
                                                     Al-Arabiya news editor Aymen Gaballah said the new tape was received Wednesday in Baghdad. As usual, he said, someone called the Al-Arabiya office and said he had a tape of Saddam.
                                                     He said the tape was aired in its entirety, 14 minutes.
                                                     Speaking with long pauses between thoughts and with the sound of papers rustling as if reading the message, the voice sounded to experienced ears to be that of Saddam, who sounded very tired.
                                                     U.S. forces in Iraq have been plagued by guerrilla attacks blamed on Saddam’s followers since he was ousted in April, hampering efforts to rebuild the country.
                                                     In an interview published Wednesday, the commander of the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq, Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, told The Times newspaper of London that U.S. soldiers now also faced revenge attacks from ordinary Iraqis angered by the occupation.

"To pay for all the big spending programs he's outlined during his campaign, he will have to raise your taxes. He can run from his record, but he cannot hide." ___

                                                    (AFP) - German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder criticised the United States for barring countries that opposed the Iraq war from bidding for reconstruction contracts there. "This is a task for all, and I emphasise all, that want or can be involved," he told reporters in Berlin after talks with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. "It does not make sense at all to discuss who should be involved and who should potentially not be involved in any recontruction effort," Schroeder said

                                                            The U.S. military on Thursday released graphic after-death photographs in an effort to prove to Iraqis that Saddam Hussein’s feared sons, Odai and Qusai, were killed in a fierce gunbattle this week. The photos were released as coalition forces were warned to expect an increase in the attacks that have killed numerous soldiers — including three on Thursday who died when their convoy was hit by gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades in northern Iraq.

                                                                                      Since the end of the Vietnam War, presidents have worried that their military actions would lose support once the public glimpsed the remains of U.S. soldiers arriving at air bases in flag-draped caskets.

                                                                                      To this problem, the Bush administration has found a simple solution: It has ended the public dissemination of such images by banning news coverage and photography of dead soldiers' homecomings on all military bases.

                                                                                      In March, on the eve of the Iraq war, a directive arrived from the Pentagon at U.S. military bases. "There will be no arrival ceremonies for, or media coverage of, deceased military personnel returning to or departing from Ramstein [Germany] airbase or Dover [Del.] base, to include interim stops," the Defense Department said, referring to the major ports for the returning remains.

                                                                                      A Pentagon spokeswoman said the military-wide policy actually dates from about November 2000 -- the last days of the Clinton administration -- but it apparently went unheeded and unenforced, as images of caskets returning from the Afghanistan war appeared on television broadcasts and in newspapers until early this year. Though Dover Air Force Base, which has the military's largest mortuary, has had restrictions for 12 years, others "may not have been familiar with the policy," the spokeswoman said. This year, "we've really tried to enforce it."

                                                                                      President Bush's opponents say he is trying to keep the spotlight off the fatalities in Iraq. "This administration manipulates information and takes great care to manage events, and sometimes that goes too far," said Joe Lockhart, who as White House press secretary joined President Bill Clinton at several ceremonies for returning remains. "For them to sit there and make a political decision because this hurts them politically -- I'm outraged."

                                                                                      Pentagon officials deny that. Speaking on condition of anonymity, they said the policy covering the entire military followed a victory over a civil liberties court challenge to the restrictions at Dover and relieves all bases of the difficult logistics of assembling family members and deciding which troops should get which types of ceremonies.

                                                                                      One official said only individual graveside services, open to cameras at the discretion of relatives, give "the full context" of a soldier's sacrifice. "To do it at several stops along the way doesn't tell the full story and isn't representative," the official said.

                                                                                      A White House spokesman said Bush has not attended any memorials or funerals for soldiers killed in action during his presidency as his predecessors had done, although he has met with families of fallen soldiers and has marked the loss of soldiers in Memorial Day and Sept. 11, 2001, remembrances.

                                                                                      The Pentagon has previously acknowledged the effect on public opinion of the grim tableau of caskets being carried from transport planes to hangars or hearses. In 1999, the then-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Gen. Henry H. Shelton, said a decision to use military force is based in part on whether it will pass "the Dover test," as the public reacts to fatalities.

                                                                                      Ceremonies for arriving coffins, not routine during the Vietnam War, became increasingly common and elaborate later. After U.S. soldiers fell in Beirut, Grenada, Panama, the Balkans, Kenya, Afghanistan and elsewhere, the military often invited in cameras for elaborate ceremonies for the returning remains, at Andrews Air Force Base, Dover, Ramstein and elsewhere -- sometimes with the president attending.

                                                                                      President Jimmy Carter attended ceremonies for troops killed in Pakistan, Egypt and the failed hostage rescue mission in Iran. President Ronald Reagan participated in many memorable ceremonies, including a service at Camp Lejeune in 1983 for 241 Marines killed in Beirut. Among several events at military bases, he went to Andrews in 1985 to pin Purple Hearts to the caskets of marines killed in San Salvador, and, at Mayport Naval Station in Florida in 1987, he eulogized those killed aboard the USS Stark in the Persian Gulf.

                                                                                      During President George H.W. Bush's term, there were ceremonies at Dover and Andrews for Americans killed in Panama, Lebanon and aboard the USS Iowa.

                                                                                      But in early 1991, at the time of the Persian Gulf War, the Pentagon said there would be no more media coverage of coffins returning to Dover, the main arrival point; a year earlier, Bush was angered when television networks showed him giving a news briefing on a split screen with caskets arriving.

                                                                                      But the photos of coffins arriving at Andrews and elsewhere continued to appear through the Clinton administration. In 1996, Dover made an exception to allow filming of Clinton's visit to welcome the 33 caskets with remains from Commerce Secretary Ronald H. Brown's plane crash. In 1998, Clinton went to Andrews to see the coffins of Americans killed in the terrorist bombing in Nairobi. Dover also allowed public distribution of photos of the homecoming caskets after the terrorist attack on the USS Cole in 2000.

                                                                                      The photos of coffins continued for the first two years of the current Bush administration, from Ramstein and other bases. Then, on the eve of the Iraq invasion, word came from the Pentagon that other bases were to adopt Dover's policy of making the arrival ceremonies off limits.

                                                                                      "Whenever we go into a conflict, there's a certain amount of guidance that comes down the pike," said Lt. Olivia Nelson, a spokeswoman for Dover. "It's a consistent policy across the board. Where it used to apply only to Dover, they've now made it very clear it applies to everyone."

                                                                                        Microsoft Corp. today released an unprecedented number= of software security updates to plug flaws in its products, including seven "critical" defects that it said hackers could use to hijack vulnerable computers running the Windows operating system.

                                                                                        The free updates, available at Microsoft's Windows Upd= ate Web site, are designed to fix at least 21 new vulnerabilities, several of w= hich reside on nearly every version of the Windows operating system and affect hundreds of millions of computers.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Microsoft rated seven of the flaws critical, its most dire warning, saying that the holes could all= ow attackers to take control of affected PCs just by convincing users to visit certain Web sites. Three of the flaws reside on the company's Internet Expl= orer Web browser.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        "I've never seen Microsoft release this many patc= hes at one time," said Darwin Herdman, chief technology officer at Red Siren,= a Pittsburgh based = Internet security company. "The install base for these flaws is enormous."=

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Oliver Friedrichs, senior manager of security response= at Cupertino, Calif.-based Internet security company Symantec Corp., said he is worried about a group of four flaws in the way Windows processes images and other digital content. These vulnerabilities, which apply to nearly all versions of Windows, pose the greatest danger for Windows home users, Friedrichs said.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Other computer experts worried about the security holes affecting software products mainly used in large and mid-sized business. Ru= ss Cooper, chief scientist at Herndon, Va.-based TruSecure Corp., pointed to t= he patch intended to plug a critical software flaw in Microsoft's Server 2003 operating system and Exchange Server 2003, a program that manages incoming = and outgoing e-mail.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        The flaw in Exchange could allow hackers to take contr= ol over unsuspecting computer users' mail servers, forcing the computers to se= nd spam and "phishing" e-mail scams.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        "There are all kinds of bad things you could do w= ith this flaw since Exchange servers are installed in some pretty high-profile companies," Cooper said.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Nearly all of the patches released today that affect W= indows XP (news - web sites) -- the operating system of choice of more than 200 million home computer users -- were included in Service Pack 2, a massive security update Microsoft released in August. Consequently, XP users who ha= ve installed Service Pack 2 only must install two of the patches made available Tuesday.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        One of those patches covers an Internet Explorer secur= ity hole rated "important" by Microsoft. The other is a re-release of= a fix Microsoft released last month to mend a problem in the way the Windows operating system and Microsoft Office products process digital image files = that could let attackers take control of affected PCs. Hackers have been exploit= ing the problem to conduct relatively minor attacks for weeks now. Microsoft sa= id it re-issued the patch because it did not install properly on many PCs.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        That re-issue also was designed to make it easier for = people to install last month's fix. The September patch was included in Service Pa= ck 2, and was made available through Microsoft's Windows Update site and its automatic update service. But many security experts criticized Microsoft for not making it clear that people with Office XP installed still needed to vi= sit Microsoft's Office Update Web site to install an additional fix to be completely protected.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        As a result of that feedback, Microsoft has agreed to = make this particular patch for its Office XP patch available via its Windows Upd= ate site, said Stephen Toulouse, Microsoft's security program manager.                                                                                         WASHINGTON — Prosecutors investigating a CIA off= icer's blown cover gathered e-mail evidence that a top White House intelligence official knew Bush confidant Karl Rove had spoken to a reporter just days before the journalist identified the covert operative.</a>

                                                                                        Rove told then-deputy national security adviser Stephen Hadley in the July 11, 2003, e-mail that he had spoken with Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper and tried to caution him away from some allegations that CIA operative Valerie Plame's husband was making about faulty Iraq intelligence.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        "I didn't take the bait," Rove wrote in the message, disclosed to The Associated Press. In the memo, Rove recounted how Cooper tried to question him about whether President Bush had been hurt by = the new allegations Plame's husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, had been making.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        The White House turned the e-mail over to prosecutors,= and Rove told a grand jury about it last year during testimony in which he also acknowledged discussing Plame's covert work for the CIA with Cooper and syndicated columnist Robert Novak.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Rove, however, told the grand jury he first learned of Plame's CIA work from journalists, not government sources.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Just days before the e-mail, Plame's husband had writt= en a newspaper opinion piece accusing the Bush administration of twisting prewar= Iraq intelligence, including a "highly doubtful" report that Saddam Hussein bought nuclear materials from the African country of N= iger.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        "Matt Cooper called to give me a heads-up that he= 's got a welfare reform story coming," Rove wrote Hadley, who has since risen= to the top job of national security adviser.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        "When he finished his brief heads-up he immediate= ly launched into Niger<= /st1:place>. Isn't this damaging? Hasn't the president been hurt? I didn't take the bait, but I said if I were him I wouldn't get Time far out in front on this."= ;

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Frederick Jones, a spokesman for Hadley, said Friday he could not comment due to the continuing criminal investigation. Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin, said his client answered all the questions prosecu= tors asked during three grand jury appearances. He said Rove never invoked his F= ifth Amendment right against self-incrimination or Bush's executive privilege guaranteeing confidential advice from aides.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Rove, Bush's closest adviser, told a grand jury the e-= mail was consistent with his recollection that his intention in talking with Coo= per wasn't to divulge Plame's identity but to caution the reporter against cert= ain allegations Plame's husband was making, according to legal professionals familiar with Rove's testimony.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        They spoke only on condition of anonymity because of t= he secrecy of the grand jury investigation.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Rove sent the e-mail shortly before leaving the White = House early for a family vacation that weekend, already aware that Novak was plan= ning an article about Plame and Wilson in his column, the legal sources said.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Rove also knew that then-CIA director George Tenet was= about to issue a dramatic statement that took responsibility for some bad Iraq intelligence but that also called into question some of Wilson's assertions, the sources said.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Republicans cheered the latest revelations Friday, say= ing they showed Rove wasn't trying to hurt Plame but instead was trying to informally warn reporters to be cautious about some of Wilson's claims.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        "What it says is, Karl Rove wasn't the leaker, he= was actually the recipient of the information, not the provider," Republic= an National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman said on Fox News. "So there are probably a lot of folks in Wa= shington who have prejudged this, who have rushed to judgment who are trying to smear Karl Rove."

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Democrats, however, said that even if Rove wasn't the leaker, someone still divulged Plame's identity and possibly violated the l= aw.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and other party l= eaders asked House Speaker Dennis Hastert on Friday to let Congress hold hearings = into the controversy regardless of the criminal probe now under way.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        "In previous Republican Congresses the fact that a criminal investigation was under way did not prevent extensive hearings from being held on other, much less significant matters," Pelosi wrote.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Federal law prohibits government officials from divulg= ing the identity of an undercover intelligence officer. But in order to bring charges, prosecutors must prove the official knew the officer was covert and nonetheless knowingly divulged his or her identity.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Rove's conversations with Novak and Cooper took place = just days after Wilson suggested in his opinion piece in The New York Times that some of the intelligence related to Iraq's nuclear weapons program was used= to exaggerate the Iraqi threat.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Summarizing a trip he made to Africa on behalf of the = CIA, Wilson wrote that he'd concluded it was highly doubt= ful the nation of Niger ha= d sold uranium yellowcake to Iraq.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Tenet issued a lengthy statement five days later sayin= g he never should have allowed Bush to use the N= iger information in his State of the Union address but that Wilson's report did not resolve whether Iraq was seeking uranium from abroad.

                                                                                               Saudi Arabia was bin Laden home, though it revoked his citizenship in the 1990s, and he reviled its alliance with the = United States during the Gulf War and beyond. Saudis have suggested for months that bin L= aden has been trying to drive a wedge between the United States and their kingd= om, hoping to fracture the

                                                                                               U.S. intelligence has suggested that Saudis were chosen, instead, because there = were large numbers willing to follow bin Laden and they could more easily get in= to the United States because of the

                                                                                        WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- In a presidential campaign focused primarily on the war on terrorism, the war in Iraq, and the economy, voters instead chose moral values as the most important issue to them in the 2004 election which contributed significantly to the reelection of President George W. Bush.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Bush, who touted his support for a constitutional amen= dment protecting marriage as between a man and a woman and for preserving and honoring the sanctity of life during his campaign, was selected by over 80 = percent of voters who chose moral values as their top issue. The economy and terror= ism were close behind in second and third respectively, according to exit polls= .

                                                                                        "It is clear that values voters have ushered Pres= ident George W. Bush down the aisle for a second term," remarked Family Rese= arch Council head Tony Perkins on Wednesday.

                                                                                         

                                                                                        In the so-called swing states, Bush received three tim= es as many votes as Kerry did from people who identified themselves as evangelical Christians. Exit polls show that one in five voters were described as peopl= e of faith, a strong conservative voting bloc that undoubtedly assured Bush of h= is reelection.

                                                                                        How many jobs have been lost and created, who is cover= ed and who is left uninsured by medical plans, and who will pay more in taxes and = who will pay less are key areas of contention between the two campaigns. With viewers expected to number in the tens of millions, the confrontation will = draw the last huge audience they can expect before Election Day.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        "These are the debates where actually the evidence matters. The president and his team can go around and say anything," K= erry adviser Joe Lockhart told "The Early Show" on CBS. "Evidence matters. That's why John Kerry wins these debates and George Bush (news - w= eb sites) loses them."

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        The president is widely viewed as having performed poo= rly in the first debate but then battling Kerry to a draw in the second. Bush camp= aign manager Ken Mehlman said the president views the third and final debate at = Arizona State University as an opportunity and looks forward to it.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        "The president knows who he is, knows what he wan= ts to do," Mehlman told CBS, "and there's a huge difference between the president and Sen. Kerry on these important domestic issues."

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        As the candidates prepared to discuss health care, the= Kerry campaign released a 30-second ad that accuses Bush of misleading voters abo= ut the Democratic health-care plan and criticizes the president for rising cos= ts.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        The National Rifle Association endorsed Bush on Wednes= day, opening a last-minute campaign that will eventually spend about $20 million= on behalf of the president's re-election, most of it in 10 to 15 states. The N= RA contends Kerry wants to "ban guns in <= st1:place w:st=3D"on">America," an assertion K= erry flatly denies.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Although the 90-minute debate is limited to economic a= nd domestic policy, there may be questions that allow Bush to discuss foreign policy, the war in Iraq (news - web sites) and the war against terrorism — all issues the Bush campaign thinks bodes well for him.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Kerry has criticized Bush's domestic record for most o= f the campaign but still spent two days secluded in a New Mexico hotel trying to master the = debate material.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        For Bush, the debate is a chance to revive in public o= pinion polls as the clock ticks down to Nov. 2. His job-approval rating slumped to= 47 percent in a USA Today-CNN-Gallup poll published Tuesday, just one percenta= ge point above the lowest point in his presidency, reached in May.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        As in the first debate, the candidates will take quest= ions standing at lecterns.                                                                                         At a rally Tuesday in Colorado Springs, Colo.,= Bush mocked Kerry's credibility and said the debates so far "have highlight= ed the clear differences between the senator and me on issues ranging from job= s to taxes to health care to the war on terror."

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        Bush said Kerry would have to raise taxes to pay for a= ll of his proposals. Kerry says he would pay for them by repealing Bush's "unaffordable" tax cuts for people making more than $200,000 and scaling back other government spending. He promised during the second debat= e that he would not raise taxes for those who make less.

                                                                                         

                                                                                         

                                                                                        "The problem is, to keep that promise, he would h= ave to break almost all of his other ones," Bush said. "To pay for all t= he big spending programs he's outlined during his campaign, he will have to ra= ise your taxes.
